Looks like Xorg enjoyers like myself can breathe a sigh -- the legacy display server has been hard forked as XLibre now by the 2024 top commit contributor to the project.
Artix GNU/Linux will be packaging this on their official repositories soon, although I know Devuan's maintainers will say this is of no interest to them, because it doesn't have anything to do with Systemd (regardless of their manpower).
So, who wants to bet Debian will show any interest in this (not all of their developers like Wayland)? In the near future, giving the user the choice between Wayland and Xorg XLibre doesn't sound all that bad to me...
Also, for those who were wondering, yes, they do have a Code of Conduct.

Lets hope some talented programmers in debian take this up. I foresee breakage but that is good, what can be broken can usually be fixed, stupid usually cant be fixed though.

More good news! Nice find brocashelm, thanks for posting it!
https://sourceforge.net/projects/vuu-do/ New Vuu-do isos uploaded April 2025!
Vuu-do GNU/Linux, minimal Devuan-based Openbox and Mate systems to build on. Also a max version for OB.
Devuan 5 mate-mini iso, pure Devuan, 100% no-vuu-do. Devuan 6 version also available for testing.

I have my doubts on that Debian seems to have gone full on in on the corporate control of GNU/Linux. All their actions over the last decade or so prove this including the reason this project exists. I would be happy to be wrong in this but all signs point to it being true.

Together we'll make X great again!
So long as this gets fixed, OK.

The only way I could see Debian using this is for support of legacy hardware etc.
I have been ditching systemd to get the RH out of my life and now I am currently working on debuntuing my life thanks to their uutils direction I just found out about.
Eventually after IBM/RH, Canonical, and Suse complete the entire corporate takeover of Linux its just going to be all of us sitting around here with Stallman beards having a good time.

The xlibre has released version 25.0.0.0 just a few days ago; heard it over the unmentionable journal

now fedora of all distros has a proposal to ditch xorg for x11libre: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/X11Libre

Good find! Sounds like they want to stop the bleeding from (yet another) bone-headed decision! They sure are slow learners in that camp . . .

I see Devuan gets a mention at The Register...

^^^ Nice! Devuan leading the push back for 10 years now, and now it seems our list of allies increases!

So we have Wayland with Xwayland and Waypipe and now also Wayback on top to sort of bring back the lost functionality of an X server. So why not just use an X server like Xorg or Xlibre and be done with it?
Whats the point of Wayland when you need all sorts of add-ons to get back the functionality and universal software support that an X server provides out of the box?
My opinion is unchanged: Wayland is a solution looking for a problem that's only causing division and more problems.
And yes I have installed and use Wayland with Gnome 3 (the only reason I chose Gnome3 was because it's meant to be touchscreen-friendly) on an Intel based tablet so I do have direct experience with it, it works (but Gnome is rather heavy on the low end cpu and the 4 GB of RAM of that tablet) but the fact that it works is certainly not a good enough reason to switch from X to Wayland, it would have to offer tangible benefits to entice me to use it on any other PCs.
Therefore I welcome Xlibre as it ensures that we continue to have an actively maintained X server.

Hi tux_99, My opinion is that they want to scratch or delete any piece of software that were created by white [insert your favorite slur or insult here] old men and exchange it by software created by them, the new moraly & intellectualy superior race, it's all about politics, Not about better software!

By the way, if there ever will be Linux apps that exclusively support Wayland (currently I'm not aware of any) we will still be able to use them on Xorg/XLibre using Weston since Weston has a X11 back-end, i.e. it can run on top of Xorg/XLibre, I just tried it (unfortunately this forum doesn't seem to allow attaching images to posts otherwise I would have included a screenshot).
Weston with X11 back-end basically enables Wayland apps to run on X11, just like XWayland enables X11 apps to run on Wayland.

well, for the time being xorg on de**an is stable enough for daily driver, anyone who can spare a machine for building and testing xlibre should to submit feedback and issues onto the repo.

Very good news! Thank you!
I hope they can rival wayland
I like their code of conduct 😁
