Is systemd still bad in 2025?

Is it? As a desktop user, is systemd still as bad? Although I have a media server at home too at one point, running Devuan. I rarely need to write init scripts. Most things work. Only pipewire is a little problem but I proposed a fix for that too. Check my past.

Have a look at this graphic hairball and decide for yourself.

That graphic also keeps morphing as new systemd dependencies are introduced. Something like the green slime . . . LOL!

The systemd creep! Long has it been since systemd was just an init system, It's becoming an operating system.
DJ Ware released a video on this recently.

Re: Is systemd still bad in 2025?

kicking the weeds a few days ago came across this good snippet from:
https://starbreaker.org/grimoire/entries/i-want-my-bsd/index.html

If I learned anything, it was the following:

GNU/Linux is mainly for people who dislike Microsoft and corporate Unix.
GNU/Linux + systemd is mainly for people who loathe Microsoft but miss Windows.
macOS is for people who dislike Windows and are OK with throwing money at problems.
The BSDs are for people who actually like Unix.
I’m not hardcore enough for Plan 9, and that’s probably OK.

It seems to be usable - I use Raspberry Pi OS on a RPi5, which has it, but not as a particular choice, I have Devuan on my RPi4B.

Re: Is systemd still bad in 2025?

The problem of systemd is mainly that it never stops growing.

Although, its already bigger than it needs to be.

It should have been complete after one hundred thousand lines of code at minimum.

Its on its way to being as big as the original Windows NT.  I read it has 6 million lines of code. Systemd has like 1 million at least.

The moment it surpasses NT is the moment people everywhere should realize the monster they made. (minimum if not sooner)  With the exception of redhat and microsoft and similar, because they have no humility in this kind of thing.

The entirety of the OS'es of all kinds has the same problem, and the rate of bloat is no longer linear.

I hate to be that guy but, let's be fair. Most of those services aren't active by default right? Also, they seem to be doing one thing? If so, then isn't it more better for Unix philosphy?

Wrong person to ask. I am just the messenger sharing an image . . .

And if you "hate to be that guy", just don't be that guy.  It's as simple as that!  smile
