in theory pulseaudio is probably one of the best development for am universal use of powerful computer in multimedia as it allow to mix or and separate divers sounds in and output objects, but nobody knows how to really do that ;-)

my problem?

I will record the sound coming from browser with a small application (sox / mhwaveedit , gnome sound recorder) or a big application if that would else not be possible :-) ...

it would be optimal to have the possibility to select ONE of ALL opened browser tabs having to manage at recording time sound activities (for. ex. I record sound from youtube at opened and working tab 4 from firefox (for example "Learn Russian at sleeping time", those videos are very, very long, till ab. 8 hours) without some use of the actual standard output of my PC and look and listen at the same time using the display and the standard output the short daily news send by BBC "direct" stream at 12 o'clock because important news about new Corona restrictions did be announced etc (by I can and will not brake my recording job for that short news video!)...

or if not possible in one browser, same think using two very different browser (Firefox or Seamonkey for the one job / epiphany Gnome webbrowser for the second job)

is that possible?

how to prepare and realize such an action?

That would only work if GRUB is installed on /dev/sda3 (ie, if grub.cfg is being read from that partition).

Otherwise the partition it must be identified on the loopback line, like this:

menuentry '[loopback]debian11' {
   search --set=isopart --fs-uuid $uuid
   set isofile='/debian11/debian11.iso'
   loopback loop ($isopart)$isofile
   linux (loop)/live/vmlinuz boot=live config fromiso=/dev/sda3/$isofile
   initrd (loop)/live/initrd.gz
}

Replace $uuid with the actual UUID of the partition.

a great problem for me (as I will use exactly the same software on 3 laptops (describe above, for what an use...) all DELL, all i7, but different Dell hardware, ... and, logic, different firmware, as well different disk size, ram size according to the uses...) I would better never use UUID because each UUID has to be unique!

I always try to continue to prefer /dev/sdaN ...

but I must say, I don't know how the ACTUAL usages permitting to use that old sort of address of partitions are today, in GRUB, in each OS etc.

and search the right manual pages is not easy if you search translating the name you use in a foreign language (as the manual pages in French and German) are not always available (the non interesting pages being not problematic are about ALL present l-)  but the real problematic pages or, the new style of Debian, all in informations Web pages (and ancomprehensible manual pages, beeing not any more comprehensible, often because the word selection used in the translation of those man pages  ...) are difficult to find with search engines because you don't use the correct English vocabulary.

I don't know some Debian wiki beginning with:

Here are your access to all official manuals publish in you tongue (in black) and those also existing but not in your tongue (in red):

- newbie manual for this (black)
- newbie manual for that (black)

- manuals for (more) ...

- mixed alphabetic index for precedent topics (words in your language in black, words only available in English in red)

- mixed alphabetic index for main pages (words in your language in black, words only available in English in red)

this is the reason why you have to repeat along the year always probably always the same recommendations again and again and again in the forums...

Debian is made only for less than 340000000 people (USA) and under 68000000 people (UK) as well as under 38000000 people (Canada) as well (perhaps!) as under 5500000 people (Liberia)... It is ridiculous quantity compared with the world population (propab. ab. 8000000000 people minus the quantities named before) made linguistic colony from USA through ...
... Debian / Devuan!

Microsoft did understand that problem 40 years ago and present since 1985 a linguistic support for each part of the world totally adapted to each population...

I am not an enemy from English language (I have grand parents being English person having live in North of France, reality being not as rare as perhaps certain admit, and have English blood in me...) but I see the division of the world through the languages and the negative influences of that evolution, the building of blocks, especially in micro informatical sciences and this will create the exactly same consequences that in the years 1965..1980 where the USA did have to admit that a lot of technological problems were already perfect solved in common Russian literature (not being accessible for American people only because language as Slavic migrants were rare in USA...). I assume that tomorrow, as no people any more else Chinese (and perhaps Japanese) people is able to produce great CPU's, Debian etc. will live terrible future: Chinese and Chinese writing will have become the new standard as Chinese people needs nobody more now to develop her technological culture completely in Chinese writing (as Indonesian people does in Indonesian, like Chinese and English one of the most simple languages. Yes, Chinese is difficult but only the writing with the benefit, that all Far East can understand the text written in Chines as far they did learn the Chinese chars traditionally also used in her own language, Cantonese, Japanese, Koreans, etc. do that)! Learn Chinese, brothers ;-) being today to proud to admit we have to do as Microsoft in the past and BUILD ALL TOGETHER an uniform and complete base technical culture in each important language room of the world if we will avoid to create more negative world structures as today (differences in financial etc. levels)...

UNIX did have avoid that problem using about only man pages: all was concentrate in those and it was clear what was to translate in which language (the only one interesting extensions were unix man pages WITH examples of uses an hints. Different internet pages offer that...).

@Head_on_a_stick and @xinomilo

I have some Debian-Live and Ubuntu-caspers (from Puppy-Dogs ;-) , a derivative of olds Debian Live designs) on the PC.

As far I can remember, it is possible to have more than one caspers system but only one unique Debian system with "live" on the hard disk...

As Devuan will be the conform extension of Debian with no systemd, the ISO's made by the refracta snapshot are based on Debian-live and a new ISO more seem to be outside the limit from one unique live system as a live system is already perhaps more than 5 years present on the disc...

I am afraid imageboot will require the same as it is from Debian or if used with a Debian like/compatible iso?

I got one of these short, stubby Samsung Fit Plus usb drives for that. Sticks out the side of the laptop about a quarter of an inch. Like one of those little nubs you get for a wireless mouse.

https://www.dataio.nl/wp-content/upload … t-Plus.jpg

Most of the different usb drive makers have their own version. They're not expensive, like $8 - $10 for a 64GB one.

I did do so with 2 big problems: I use 3 different laptops daily:

the main laptop fest on an support arm on the table
(because bad view so it is high enough AND a keyboard with my really map US INTL (it is a relatively rare map as hardware! But I have such keyboards; perhaps French speaking families in the USA also because no way to write easily French with the real French map of France if you are not accustomed, to much is different including sensible chars like "m" (for ex. to write setxkboarMap :-)) , or numbers in passwords, user names etc. The French keyboard of France is terrible...)! The US INTL map is best to write about ALL MAJOR LANGUAGE of all the world, if you write then not too often. Nothing to install, user directly in connection with the US INTL map the site http://inputking.com (you need only to install the adequate fonts!) and can immediately write Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Russian, Tamil, Telugu etc!)
not movable any more with and because all cables fest wired on the support arm

the transsormer laptop with touch screen usable as tablet with or without integrated keyboard / pad

the light weight laptop with phone adapter and SIM card.

My experience is: I have never the mini stick with me as I need it!

This also is an important reason... But more, my mini stick connect unwilling on USB3 ;-( . If you have the stick with you, it is possible, you can't connect because unclear ancompatibilities... Also you need more sticks and soon you will have software differences from stick = from hardware, probably laptop, to stick.

no really, it is not the good solution! Why an Terra Byte(s) big HardDisk if it can't store all the software?

A question more: I don't like USB hardware stick outside from my laptops because danger (one more) for the computer itself. I assume other users are also afraid about the same danger and did try to use refracta snapshot iso's directly out the internal hard disk?

What seems to be the best way to do that?

Puppy linux was for me the ideal way for full possession of MY hardware and the software installed by me.

Why?

Simple:

all in RAM,

nothing, what I not wish, on the disk :-)) !

After shutdown, nothing more!

But the Refracta installer and the packages offered by Devuan permit to make yourself equivalent, more, equivalent best adapted with your needs and habits...

My actual installation with the great help of divers engaged member of the Devuan community did permit me to build a good ISO starting about like a Puppy live and offering the same or more possibilities! Thank you, than you very much!

The ISO hat 800 MB size (young Puppy's have often, under consideration that the traditional Puppy extension devx.sfs is a very big squashed file a size what is not far from this 800 MB, but are not yet out the generation of the Linux newest testing systems!)

I did describe here:

https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=4898
https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=4906
https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic. … 769#p46769

my very detailled (as a lot of Puppy users are very simple users in a system what never did respect all Linux rules) view how to realize such a minimal installation to work always from RAM. In my remastered version of the real Puppy Linux (made out stuff from Devuan / Debian), I store within the ISO an adapted /etc/fstab binding the installation with my sda5 (as I can organize all my computers so, that the sda5 is present and can have in all computers that function, store the data and some stuff I will have absolutely equivalent independent from the installation for ex. dictionaries (I don't will an hunspell dictionary so on the one system but different on the next system: it is nonsens, etc.) as well as one adapted ~/.mozilla. Why? This adapted settings as well as history registering from active Mozilla can store sensitive not-very-sensitive data, but only such one, and store certain cookies, but not the other... All that is present in RAM and all happens in RAM. After the shutdown of the system, all is totally forgot: only the stuff, that I have selected in the ~/.mozilla fest saved in the ISO can continue to be reused later after the next start and more starts!

I did today realize, that Refracta live use did hide some content of /home/user etc. I have to continue to experiment that problem probably solving through links and sub dir's in /home/user...

#210 Re: Installation » xorg start only as super user! why? » 2022-01-07 23:08:04

oui

no, your affirmation is simply

wrong

(see above!).

I don't know if the installation WITHOUT SOME display manager have to include elogind, libpam-elogind (it starts a deamon before the login!).

but using

xserv-xorg-legacy

(is not pre installed) permit to choice between 3 level of security.

ACTUALLY all 3 ways are yet a bit unsercure ;-) (not my comment: the application explains it itself in the help comment for the choice, ty it, you will understand, and, I think, that is the most pleasant and ridiculous information...)

I did use the 2d choice as it is the WELL ALLOWED choice permitting to preserve the old usage to start X also with startx as user to avoid super user level,

and can now startx with startx as user!

As I did suppose in my msg from today 00:12:46 (see above)

it must be an other reason (concerning "rights" perhaps?)...

it is really only a matter of permission (my problem actually: I am French and speak fluent German and understand well some Russian but did only "learn" the BASIC English made by C.K. Ogden with only 850 words ;-) . It is not enough for Linux. More, a lot of Linux gods, creators, write some extremely and fantastic difficult English (-probably because they are themself not mother tongue English speakers-). In essential NEW questions (this point was not so in the first years of Linux! I did never meet until now this point really on the edge) are the man pages only useful if you can read them in (one, if you have more one, of) your language(s) but they often don't exist yet in translation! So they are not known outside the English language room... In this case, it is double difficult, as the system resources are not already allow: you can't enter into X, you can't start an efficient browser, more, I have now (as I can startx with startx, now) open more than 1 (one) Terminal but I can't really read the content of then as the preinstalled Terminal resolution does only able to operate with the resources of "faceSize" and to changer that, I have to change read the man page of faceSize itself, one of the most longer man page of Linux, and that, in about microscopic size as I would have to already know how to use faceSize to permit me to read that man page of faceSize, an absolute idiotic situation!

each Linux installation with X !!!

includes always at least

3 (good usuable) editors (nano, vim and, and, and, and what? the forgotten xedit of course, where 1 good editor would be enough...)

but the standard installation from the main lines of Linux (also Devuan) don't secure that the user meet a Terminal with readable size for all people...

and they force also unexperimented users to search through all the system for a way to change that (debian-menu > selection bash >> some menu text in clear xml code or not >>> name of the command >>>> x-terminal-emulator >>>>> link object = lxterm >>>>>> xterm (says at leat the man page from lxterm))

;-)

What a nonsens!!!

so an totally UNfriendly system did Linux become along the years...

it is not possible!

I can understand the users of Microsoft! A genial distributor since 1990 and longer all always in the country language in in each country language! Never some difficulties to see the letters of the texts... Linux is becoming a pest only made for some gurus, really,..

Hi
I did enter now in this forum through the use of "Links2 -g"  in the new installation. It now goes after the installation of elogind, libpam-elogind, as well as xserv-xorg-legacy (probably that the last is decisive for the attribution of rights as you can after that opt for one of 3 rights level for the installation). As I am not confortable in links2 -g, excuse me, but not more comments now ;-) (I am happy if that msg will appear in the forum out that very low level...)!

Thank you for your help Dutch_Master but in this case, it is not the reason:

xinit, vers. 1.4.0, IS installed (and works as superuser). and xdm is not a dependency: it is needed if you will start directly in graphic mode. this is the reason why the "normal" graphic mode (out the console) names "startx"...

it must be an other reason (concerning "rights" perhaps?)...

I continue to be searching for a really minimal install from Devuan (comparable with the live Puppy Linux made with Devuan ).

To do that, I did install now with the ISO devuan_daedalus_5.0.preview-20211227_i386_netinstall.iso from main site.

The completely normal "install", all questions answered with "yes" or default value (excepted "all the disk"). In "tasksel" only the last option preserved so the installer installs only 141 new packages. It is the only difference to the proposed stereotypic installation!

on this base
I did  continue as root as sudo is not preinstalled

su -

and I did install after that

apt install sudo gpm deborphan alsa-utils refractasnapshot-base links2 menu 9menu xorg xli

fill the file suders:

nano /etc/sudoers

and exit superuser mode

exit

then as user with superuser rights continue:

xinit

X starts willing and rxvt (or better little sized screen field) appears

I can start

links2 -g

no problem (I handle as superuser)!

go off from X mode

exit

go off from superuser mode

exit

and

startx

No way...

X starts, the cursor appears but become not black, all the keys seem to be blocked (no way to open a next console to quit regular the linux session. "reset" is the only way!)

- I did reinstall, same thing happens again! -

what is wrong?

I did reinstall on the HardDisk, this time actual Daedalus 32 with the French language but simple (I need not the simple but the International, but the other derivates of us map were not proposed) American Keybord, out the original net install ISO from Devuan, with Gnome ans Gnome sessions manager.

It seems to work great!

I comes without preinstalled refracta tools. I did install both packages for snapshot.

And erase all the not Gnome software (mainly firefox, LO, ab. 1 GB of for nothing good pre installed stuff).

After that, I did install the stuff from Gnome of course! Abiword, Gnumeric, Gimp, mgp (as Gnome has nothing else and this presentation is really enough for my purposes), epiphany-browser, tesseract-ocr, gimagereader.

This installation seems to work as I will as full install.

After that, I did add refractasnapshot both packages.

And realize my first snapshot with succes...

With success, hm, really?

Yes, success as the iso exits really and is usable.

But all is in English after start and the time is the time of Greenwitch not hour time (I did forget the New Year as I am using this iso now!).

2 Questions:

a. How to "re-snapshot" with that part (*1 of installation?

b. During copy time in Snapshot, at copy time for /usr/share, thousands of files for foreing parts of the world being not yet or in the future actual for me did be copied! Is a fast as well as simple way known how to eliminate all that (including English ;-)  !) what not relevant is for my own localization(s , if I have more than one) to spare copy and squash time  as well as iso size?

(*1 that part = the initial selected and activated language, in my case also French, as well as the (other) local settings: time, active language for system, active language for spell control!

Hi

First of all, I wish you fsmithred, as well as all forum user an Happy New Year for 2022! We all need that: Never did our world so much exigences to satisfy not really being easy to satisfy... ALSO BEST WISHES TO ALL!

fsmithred wrote:

You are correct that it is possible in Expert install to install the system without creating a root password or a user account. This can be done by using the arrow keys to skip over that task in the menu. If you just press ENTER every time you get to the menu, it automatically takes you to the next item, and you won't miss anything.

About the menu items "Install" and "Expert install": That's the way the installer has been since Debian Etch. Changing the words would probably confuse thousands of people.

If you are unfortunate enough to boot to a system that you installed without root password or user account, there is a simple fix:
- At the boot menu, choose Advanced options and then boot into Rescue mode.
- Press ENTER to get a root console.
- Set a root password and create a user account with the following commands and on-screen instructions:

passwd
adduser <your-login-name>

If you don't want to wait for packages to download during the installation, use the DVD and do not select a mirror. The install will only take a few minutes. I can sympathize with you on this point. The netinstall is too slow for my taste, and I have 100Mb/s down speed here.

If you don't want the installer to stop and ask you questions, you can do an Automatic install. It's in the Advanced options of the installer boot menu, and there are other things you must do for it to work. I don't know the details about it, but that's what people who need to install dozens or more of systems use.

The primary goal of Devuan has always been to provide Debian without systemd. We try to change as little as possible, and we encourage people to make derivative distros if they want to provide something different.

Thank you really for that excellent answer (else if I am not really agreeing als items ;-) ). The way you show to recover password and create user is easy. It is full acceptable and I now know how to do in such case. DVD' s, hm, really? They consume an enormous quantity of internet rate as well as quantity of time to use finally a few part of tehm. You have to wait the same time to download and after that to install the iso on an usb stick... and you are not certain at all to have the all content of the depository! overthat, on old PC, that drive is the one having early problems to do it' s primary job, to burn and later to read the disc!

But the major problem is not that: if I really understand https://www.devuan.org/get-devuan there is no DVD for devuan daedalus i686 :-) !

How to use that, what is not available?

Concerning Automatic install: In the past, I did made one time that the automatic installer did require all the hard drive and format it so... Hm! This way is not transparent enough! My HD is 3/4 TB heavy and full with data, not with some music or video, and I can't take such a risk!

The installation is now good for today and to entry without apprehension into the year 2022 in a few minutes here in Germany!

Again: Merry good year to you and your family!

@Camtaf

A few details above concern also your proposal.

But that is to much:  " Of course, if you feel Devuan isn't for you, feel free to use another distro."

As I did explain, I use Devuan all the time since it' s creation!

An I wish really one: Success for Devuan and it is not being not critic that Devan can become better than it's teacher Debian. More, if Devuan uncritic such errors as the stop for "slim"  at 28 % of the download install and we say nothing, the Devuan installer become disgusting: The programmer as to understand what is the real reason of the installations step "tasksel" (I did never meet "slim" in Debian ;-) ...)

This time, many persons have time because of Christmas and New Year holidays. I have also time. And I did decide to spend the time to reorganize my work using Devuan for next year, 2022 (I wish all user of Devuan a merry New Year)!

I did begin yesterday.

Since years, install a very good and complete distro comparable with Devuan (I mean Deepin) is a matter of 12 minutes on my PC. But as Deepin is highly conform with official Ubuntu and later, now, Debian (and includes some files in each directory being not usual in other distro as well is requiring acceptance of a use contract (this alone is absolutely not usual in other free distributions, but only in the bad commercial ones like Redhat, Suse, etc,) I install Deepin, yes, because of the extremely wide Deepin Store providing applications erased already a long time in for ex. Debian and also Devuan, but I use Devuan since the begin of the Devuan activities... Devuan was already installed yesterday on my PC but an old version of Chimerea. As I not only want to refresh the software but if possible make a step with progress direction future, I did begin yesterday to try to accede to an operable new Devuan system being also possible to install in 12 minutes (this not possible any more with the new Deepin: the new Deepin is pure Debian, but with special extensions from Deepin. All Debian weakness are now also present in Deepin, that is the consequence of that bad total compatibility! If you want to install Deepin without toil, use the Extix live version!). There is no fresh Extix live version from Devuan... Sorry. And not with Gnome. New Gnome versions don't like Debian or Debian derivates, it is so (I don't speak only about the actual "stable" as it is the same in "testing" or "experimental"...).

As it was not possible to have success using the Devuan official installer for the pre version devuan_daedalus_5.0.preview-20211227_i386_netinstall.iso (as I hope that the netinstall version offers the most actual stuff) because under the option "expert" (it is a terrible name for the option... That name as only ONE reason: try to discourage the user not really needing more options! Why so a name? It is absurd and it is a violence against the other users ABSOLUTELY NEEDING more options as users live in a country where more than one language or one national district area use, or user needing more than one software schema including more keyboard layouts because of different writing usages in the country (see later about that!). Why not a friendly name for the 2 selections: "installation with few options" and "installation with more options"? It would show more respect for the users having real need of more options without to be a real expert!). I did finally erase the new installation (the old one was already away since yesterday as it is not possible using the installers only to move and so preserve the old installation in a child directory at installations time: you can only erase the old directory with 0.0.0.0 or format it! So I did not have some Devuan any more...) form yesterday and reinstall today!

The installation is in Debian AND IN DEVUAN (as Devuan guy's continue to associate fully blind her work with the practice in Debian (and probably make it very more worse as it is!)

- A SHAME
- TERRIBLY
- AN HORROR.

To day, I did not do only that as I don't work at the computer all the day, but ALL THE TIME AT THE PC was dedicated to those both installation and

the result for all the time give  along 24 hour to PC work is highly LAMENTABLE!

Yesterday evening, the named "expert" installer way did not ask for as primitive data as "root password", "user", "usr password" (I did see today, the question happens not really immediately but in the beginning steps after looking on the hardware). All the work after that position in the process of installation was

for nothing!

(I am supposing today that the rest of the installation was acceptable, but without access rights this installation can't be use. Great among of completely loose time!)

Today, the installation under the option "install" deed finish regular and starts really. excepted two error messages "Impossible to access to the Gnome Flashback depository" (on French, perhaps the words used on English are different, I did use today different from yesterday French as installations language as I did see, that links given to me by friendly forum users are not available on German but are present in French...) as well as a proprietary module "regulatory.db" (which I never did meet until today installing Linux) was not available on some CD at home and I did not install it for that reason (is that new? Why such way now?). I did enter in the installation now (at the evening, 24 h  later as I did begin to refresh my system!)... It seems to works although those 2 error messages at operating time.

To spare time (time of other seems to be for the programmers of Debian / Devuan completely uninteresting!) I did start the long phase of the software download and installation before the lunch... As I come back, the PC wait, wait, wait at 28 % of the installation!

Why?

To ask if "slim" as to be installed or the regular other sessions manager!!!

What is that mist?

It is a real mist!!!

Devuan installs in the Gnome installation about nothing from Gnome (no Gnome Office, no Home browser but the extremely big ones from LO and Firefox and I wait hours and hours for my installation to discover AFTER WAITING ALL THAT TIME, that about 1 GB of installation was for nothing as I did select Gnome because of Gnome software of course (I know, the name was not "Gnome installation" but "TaskGnomeFlashBackDesktop" but

how knows, actually looking in tasksel,

what "TaskGnomeFlashBackDesktop" really is? It is HIGLY RIDICULOUS: I you want Gnome, at this time only continue with the item where you see the word GNOME and make trust to the Devuan programmers that they are serious (but they are not serious: they are clowns in this case!)...

For the big LO and Firefox, installing after that 1 GB software step by step under great sacrifice of time. the installer does not stop! But for "slim", a installations microbe that you easily overright later as you can install more than one sessions manager, it stops at 28 % of the long installations time of 1404 installations modules, and forces the user to sit having nothing to do excepted look and to be bored behind the screen otherwise blocked by the installation job, only because the programmer was not able to ask that selection also in taksel if he means the choice is propy (same thing for LO, for Firefox: it is the job of such a TASK SELector like tasksel!!! . Are occidental programmers completely fool today? Have occidental programmers really no respect for the time loosing of the users as well as their deception looking at the result?

It is a own DEVUAN problem: I did use also SID with XFCE4 along all one year after an installation of with the same official Debian net installer from last year and, yes, the Debian installer works terribly slow compared with the initial Deepin installer (for the same job at least...!), need 8 or 10 time more time (ab. 90 minutes) but, hat the end, after the deception to have had to wait so long, you are happy and did not make a sacrifice of you all PC work day...

Last comment:
Devuan ask on it's ISO download page for some spend of money but marks some search site like Bing etc. in the settings of the browser ;-) . But ignore all of FREE SITES for search like https://lilo.org (used by the Debian derivate https://emmabuntus.org, a great derivate Debian for poor people made by and for OMG https://emmaus-france.org/). If Devuan would condescend tom include those searches or analogue in the firefox presets as emmabuntus does (and the installations module for firefox is for this reason well existing and working!), Devuan would (probably) receive money automatically at all search times...

I did reinstall Devuan today early with above iso and use the expert mode and select my 2 languages Swiss German and Swiss French and the real country were I am living, Germany. in taksel 2 option Xcfe4 as well as Gnome.

The installations language did be used as wished except at the end of the installation where a comic question did appear. select one of but only one selection did be offered, somewhat like "no boot installation". I did not choice it but "continue". the question did re appear once and the installation did finish. without grub, no problem, but no dialogue (* about root password or user name and user password, and that is very bad...

How to add both using an available external installation on the same hard disk or usb (on the hard disk, I have the actual deepin (**, and did use it to add grub.cfg parameters) and puppy linux (being probably able to write into the new Devuan installation? Deepin as Debian stuff will probably refuse also as root!)?

(* that dialogue IS NOT a separate item in the list of steps where you can always return before you quite the installation!!! what a surprise !?! :-(( ...

(** and did have already changed /etc/fstab! I find ABSURD that new installations always format the swap! if you have other installation(s) on the disk, the UUID's of swap of all other installations become invalid and your computer system help you to kill time, not to work simply and effective and spare time! What a non sens!

At installation's time, the choice of the browser did be killed in the last years! No distro any more without Firefox-ESR...

Although

Gnome offers an own browser...

Although

about all distros pre install webkit2 etc. :-) (luakit = less than 4 MB more installation, Firefox-ESR about 220 MB !!!)

Allthough

Konqueror is again offered (but never as main browser) in KDE!

The only liliputian distro doing different is SliTaz because the old staff of SliTaz did develop a little TazWeb on webkit to use as system panel in a browser and the old guys are not willing to remake the job. SliTaz pre install (the old) Midori and offers a Xombrero package (luakit would probably also go). But both ave old libraries and are unable to show a lot of pictures and video stuff...

The monopolist situation is Linux is a lot stronger as Bill Gate itself did ever dream (same thing concerning languages: Linux is the most powerful instrument to make English about indispensable)...

Why?

My problem with that?

The size of Firefox-ESR as I prefer use live OS's as full installed OS's...

So I continue to search for alternatives for Firefox-ESR. But it is so, that the monopolism from Firefox-"Commercial Enterprise"  afraid the Internet tools developers and encourage them to give up their activities. Hard, hard, our future in sight!

I am looking for extensions (as luakit is extensable) for Luakit giving access to about all the same options as in Firefox (or Seamonkey).

An idea where to find adequate stuff?

the next problem would of course be:

how to do the same after a live start (as extix likes to do with the refacta tools!)?

theoreticaly easy but the refracta snapshot did until yet always end with error message concerning not enough memory, so no way to test more, And the next step would be after that how to include the above explained neutral settings?

The fascination of extix builds is the very simple live start without need of slim or more!

how to clone "neutral" the in a partition existing os, add only some own general settings (for ex. /boot + /etc/clock + /etc/fstab + /etc/keymap + /etc/localtime + /etc/ + ~/.mozilla, or ~/config/mousepad + ~/.config/Thunar + ~/.config/xfce4, this in case of XFCE4 install, -on other installations equivalent ones, the goal is to start with a immediately working system with only a well defined history and not all the steps from yesterday and days before. Note: fstab link / or not the main data partitions for documents, data etc. I use sda5 and would prefer bind them as sda5 to avoid to have an fstab with UUID's as they are different on my different on my diverse computers: main computer at home, not movable any more, computer with phone card and adequate phone interface, transformer computer usable also as touch screen tablet - all are relatively old DELL's, all with i7 and 4 .. GB RAM, but divers hardware).

at install bootloader from within new system, it's important *****!!!!!

Head_on_a_Stick did give us a solution for simple cloning:

Head_on_a_Stick wrote:
felixed wrote:

# install bootloader from within new system, it's important *****!!!!!

grub-install /dev/nvme1n1p6
update-grub

For non-UEFI systems it is strongly recommended to install GRUB's core.img to the block device rather than the partition. If it is installed to the partition it can be "lost" during fsck operations and is generally more fragile. GRUB itself will give a warning about this if it is attempted.

And it's also best to update the debconf database with the new location rather than running grub-install manually:

dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc
update-grub

EDIT: I did post a manual method earlier but changed my mind and deleted it. Here it is again but without the manual partitioning bit because I decided that was too likely to wreck the system if the wrong device was given...

So this presumes you have already partitioned and formatted the new drive, which is identified hereafter as /dev/sdX — replace X with the correct letter and use lsblk -f to check (it will show which partitions are already mounted).

First mount the two partitions (this presumes the first partition is for / and the second is for /home, correct as needed):

mount /dev/sdX1 /mnt
mkdir /mnt/home
mount /dev/sdX2 /mnt/home

Then copy the system over:

apt install rsync
rsync -aAXHv --exclude={"/dev/*","/proc/*","/sys/*","/tmp/*","/run/*","/mnt/*","/media/*","/lost+found"} / /mnt
sync

Wait for the sync command to return the prompt to ensure the copy buffers are all flushed to the drive.

Now generate a new fstab and chroot into the system to install & configure the bootloader:

apt install arch-install-scripts
genfstab -U /mnt > /mnt/etc/fstab
arch-chroot /mnt
dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc
update-grub

Finally exit the chroot and un-mount  the drive:

exit
umount /mnt/home
umount /mnt

That's it.

Tank you very much Head_on_a_Stick, a great answer really!

The rest problem is to neutralise the history and preserve some general (also own) settings (or setting for the person for which you to that)  a explained above (or better, welcome!) and start the clone, after that not changed any more until the next snapshot, live in the RAM:

You get max. comfort (if you are not afraid, you can enter an remember in for ex. ~/.mozilla a lot of not critical user names, passwords , cookies (* ), links, and start configuration like opened tab for weather, for local news paper for my city with access data and rights, for local national or international news paper, for http://inputking.com for permanent access to about all East and Far East writing without to need to install and setting up special input methodes etc., but your complete NEW history will be forgotten at absolutely each level each time you shutdown or restart (including the terrible's /.cache and /.Trash from main device!

How to do that?

(it is easy in Puppy Linux! I do it actually with as well a DebianPup as a DevuanPup! Only start /system/puppy-liveCD, Fill up the 2 initial little windows and at the normally 3thd one, where you are invited to add in /root, add your /root/.mozilla as wished! 2 steps later same thing in /etc ! So simplify is that! You only can't change some structural definitions (for ex. mount /dev/sda5 directly in /home/spot through /etc/fastab, as this subdir is not really empty at start time, or reactivate xorg.conf with predefined values for a group of keyboard to commute easily via some windows key as the automatic detection overwrite all your choices after start)! so simply that in PuppyLinux live if you renounce or CAN NOT USE the old save file/save dir way from PuppyLinux (for ex. because you have to use 3 different computers where /dev/sda5 is always for all the place to save documents, data, files, including some /mnt/sda5/.wine with own and different content for each of the 3 or more computers!)

(* to avoid to have to have to much work to authorize for each site you visit at each next session, as of course, no cookie is present if you don't authorize (certain pages have fair cookies rules, other not! YOU have to appreciate the profit and the inconvenient...

and I did commute the background to the milky way BG from refracta of course!

as I want now to go to bed, it is late here, ab. 22'00 now, my first problem today is to

save my work to do more tomorrow without to have to to all the changes again.

I know (from the great site extix.se using very intensiv the refracta tools, thank you extix!) that refacta exactly the distro giving tools for that, but I don't know / unterstand what is to do...

Is there a step by step introduction somewhere ho to rebuild the ISO with above mixture?

what is with the contents of
[*]/home/user[/*]
[*]/etc[/*]
[*]/usr/share[/*]

(I have to adapt some files in /usr/share/applications. for ex.  /usr/share/applications/text-editor as I did erase vim and geany! Xedit is ALLWAYS pre installed! Why not use it! In English, no problem at all! I find it is a good editor!)

And I have before remaster the ISO to adapt grub.cfg (to have only two options: start all in RAM or start from HD settings! An good alternative would be to start the new ISO directly through the pre installed grub.cfg from pre installed Devuan Star 64 bit as direct ISO start but WITH ALL writing rights. But, as an old Puppy Linux user, I don't be able to manage the needing grub declarations (as Puppy linux continues don't to use GNU Grub and offers small applications making the job auctomaticly for you!).

Are perhaps adequate instructions to find in that forum?

Hi
I did discover this relatively new ISO (as well as it' s companion, a 64 bit ISO) yesterday and install it soon.
It is small and very flexible at use.
All seems to work perfectly especially the start in RAM giving to the system an extra speed!

I did found the iso a bit over load with options I will never use at all:

sudo apt remove geany geany-common vim vim-runtime mc mc-data mutt firefox-esr synaptic

I miss some useful other option
next step is to lead the actual list from depository

sudo apt update

and add the missing things:

sudo apt install gv didiwiki tesseract-ocr gimagereader gnumeric mgp luakit lame mhwaveedit nted

After that, I did actualize the system excepted the kernel (the actual started kernel seems to wor; do never disturb a running system...):

sudo apt install curl libayatana-indicator3-7 libcurl3-gnutls libcurl4 libgmp10 libjavascriptcoregtk-4.0-18 libnss3 libseccomp2 libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37 linux-compiler-gcc-10-x86 linux-libc-dev publicsuffix wget xserver-common xserver-xorg-core xxd

(I don' t know if it is the good way to actualize partially the system? But the system didn't make some opposition!)

And, finally, I did interchange thunar to nemo (this one need only under 20 MByte more space but offers the function "tree"! I find " tree"  important enough to do that!

After all the changes, I will have saved a lot of memory room compared with the initial set of applications...

And I have now a very larger choice of applications!

the theme of star is very very dark

the top bar of the file manager is middle grey: you can see it very good also if more than one applications windows are at the same place!

the top bar of the browser is dark grey: it is very difficult to recognize it and  I make often errors shutting the wrong application down...

how to amend that?
