Isn't Debian / Devuan a base for others to build from?

The official website certainly says so:
Devuan is conceived as a base OS on which to roll your own distro.
https://www.devuan.org/os/devuan-distros
It seems a Mod has now also moved this thread inappropriately from the "Devuan Derivatives" to the "Intergalactic Communities" subforum, as if Spaced Linux isn't a Devuan derivative. ![]()

Hey guys! I'm the Spaced Linux dev. Lots to respond to here. Firstly, I'm not trying to keep root password from an end user, quite the opposite. For whatever reason in an early testing version it was 1 (expedience), but it's not supposed to ask for root at all from the Live ISO, so that was a mistake/issue, and I *think* it's been solved since then. At the moment there is an AMD xorg issue in ceres, so 10.26.1 and 10.26.2 are both having issues.
Thanks for posting those videos. Those are me and I still stand by them.
This is not a vanity distro. I have clients and every other OS sucks. It's really just that simple. Spaced Linux, built on Devuan Ceres is superior to all other OSes for usability, functionality, efficiency, and reliability. And that's mainly thanks to you guys here because Devuan is awesome.
Most of you guys are probably trying it in a VM, and it's not really designed for that. It should still work, but it's WAY better on real hardware. Just FYI.
I believe our Nvidia installer is best in class, even better than the Linux Mint nvidia installer. Still working on the AMD stack, but it was pretty great just 2 version ago.
Flatpak is just for ease of use for normies. If you guys want to apt everything: that is definitely all built in, and will probably work better than whatever you are currently using as a main desktop.
The Compiz/MATE choice is highly intentional. It's a clearly superior interface to all other DEs. And it's old, stable, and fast. The enhanced zoom alone makes it better than KDE/Gnome, or any other mind-slave DEs, and also better than the Open Source friendly options (non wayland, etc..).
If you guys have questions or suggestions for me: I'M ALL EARS. I love Devuan (obviously), and I'm just trying to make a nice, normie friendly Devuan desktop to free the world from corporate baby eaters.

Did you really have to post this "advertisement" twice when a link to one of the posts would have sufficed? But then . . . considering that the messaging for "Space Linux" from day one has been a bit off-target for Devuan, perhaps it was to have been expected . . .
Online
The posts were subtly different, and I don't know why we're in Intergalactic Communities, when Spaced is clearly a devuan derivative.... Sorry if I didn't handle it optimally, not my intent. Just figured there should be SOMETHING in the Devuan derivative section, since our main goal is making a better Desktop OS for Devuan. LMK what you would prefer. I'm on team Devuan. Not trying to be a detractor in any way.

Devuan is not Ubuntu. A spinoff promoting flatpacks is unlikely to garner much appreciation/support here at Devuan. Also the communication from day one about this distro has seemed very off the mark . . .

I would agree with this for the most part, have done a lot of work with it over the years, it does have some issues here and there though. Keep an eye on ~/.xsession-errors as occasionally Caja takes great exception to certain themes and will spam you to death about it.
Suggestions:
IMO the right-click extensions for Caja shouldn't be in separate packages, they should just be native.
The screenshot tool throws up like a 10 pixel border around the shot when trying to grab just a single window, yuck.
The set-as-wallpaper extension works, but it throws whatever you selected up there using the same style as the previous one had (i.e. zoom, center, stretch etc.), which in many cases is the wrong style, frequently users will use an image that's much larger or much smaller than the screen, so they wind up and have to open the settings-manager and go to the wallpaper tab anyway.
There's a couple ways to do this better, in my stuff the extension first copies the image to the wallpapers folder, then opens the wallpaper manager to set it and apply a style. Bonus there: If someone sets the paper from an arbitrary location, then later moves that image, it blanks the desktop, this way that can't happen.
You could also just have that extension open up a specific tiny dialog before applying, that asks the user to set the style.
I do agree with golinux that flatpaks are not much loved around here, myself included. Nor snaps. And if you're looking for stable deployment for customers it would seem that blithely encouraging them to download whatever from flathub or whatever flats repo, is a recipe for heartache.
Good luck and welcome to Devuan! ![]()

@golinux as a moderator/administrator it shouldn't really be your job to manipulate forum discussion based on your own personal opinion and prejudices. Your only job should be to make sure the forum rules are respected.
I find it very sad that the official forum for such an important Distro such as Devuan is suffering under the manipulations of a single mod/admin to the point that already an alternative independent Devuan forum had to be created to escape this inappropriate and overreaching moderation.
It's people like you who are limiting the growth of Devuan by driving away people who don't conform to your personal expectations and opinions, no matter what good you allegedly did for Devuan in the past.
I don't care if you ban me for writing this, it would only prove my point, I have held back writing this for too long, and I wished I never would have had to write this.

an alternative independent Devuan forum
Let's be clear here, Dev1galaxy is a support forum for Devuan, not mine or anybody else's spins or projects, and users can usually always find answers here.
Our forum was created to be a think-tank, to offer help and ideas to anyone who is an experimenter in numerous distros of all kinds. There is no animosity between us and this forum, quite the opposite, most of us actively use Devuan and appreciate the work that goes into it very much, and are actively developing solutions to upstream issues that plague us all, which might be of benefit to Devuan and the whole of the Linux community. You can see many of the projects we are working on at git.devuan.org where we freely share them in the hope that they might be useful.
The things and topics we discuss over there, would just clog up this forum with a lot of extra noise and would degrade the quality of tech support that is provided here.

That's certainly its main purpose, but this forum has a "Devuan Derivatives" subform too, so derivatives and spins are definitely within the scope of the forum.
Moving discussions about particular derivates to off-topic sections just because a mod doesn't like a particular derivative for whatever personal preferences is simply abuse of his power and will alienate both creators and users.
And similar things are happening regularly here, this is not an isolated event.

@tux_99
Why would I ban you? You just have an over active imagination and your rant says much more about you than it does about me.
Fact . . . I have NEVER unilaterally banned anyone in the history of this forum. That decision is made by consensus of all moderators. I HAVE deleted a few inappropriate posts over the years.
Fact . . . I have seen the change in the quality of Devuan users over the years and the trajectory of skills and motivations has not been encouraging for the future of freedom. Actually, it is rather depression to see what has happened to the generation that has never known a world without the internet . . .
Fact . . . am delighted that those who were really not suited for this forum now have their own playpen in which to thump their chests.
Please enlighten us . . . what have YOU contributed to Devuan?
Online
@golinux I might not have contributed anything of significance to you but at least I don't alienate potential contributors like you are doing.
Your posting style is destructive towards people who actually contribute or would like to contribute, that's even worse than not contributing at all.
See for example also how you treated KindlyDoRight who tried to help out (and hopefully didn't give up despite your treatment) in the last few days: https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=8237

So why was this thread moved to Intergalactic Communities from Devuan Derivatives ? I didn't see a reason given anywhere.

That's not at all true, you are in fact a member of that forum since April of this year. With quite a lot of interesting posts. ![]()

Wasn't this thread started by yourself @Ron, as a question to the world about the motive behind a particular situation among the threads on this forum?
Therefore the thread ended up here, because I decided that that kind of discussion is more suited to this section.
Overall this, i.e. dev1galaxy.org, is a discussions forum of many section, and certain sections should be more focussed in their topics than others. It's not always easy to do that with the range of minds around here generating all sorts of posts to make threads floating in all sorts of directions. Yet I don't see any hands raised for taking on the moderator responsibility; just the odd whining by rando's.

'Devuan is not Ubuntu. A spinoff promoting flatpacks is unlikely to garner much appreciation/support here at Devuan. Also the communication from day one about this distro has seemed very off the mark . . .'
I've been using Devuan since the very first release. I'm a semi-retired data center architect, and did a lot of comparison analysis, especially in those early years between Debian (after they murdered Ian and made it take the D), and Devuan. There's no comparison. Devuan was better full stop on every analytic.
Flatpaks are easy to use. They exist for almost every app. They avoid dependency hell. They are easier for normies to pin to a specific version and not have to upgrade. I'm sorry it took me so long to come over here to the forum, I'm not sure what communication is off the mark, but I'm here to fix that. Instead of working on 10.26.3 and fixing the amdgpu xorg regression that just cropped up, by the way, which seems to be an upstream Ceres thing AFAIK.
I'm not building a server OS. We have that. That's Devuan. I'm building a desktop OS. Spin it up and try it out yourself. You may even reluctantly love it. Once Voxa is fully integrated, you'll probably hate it again, but again, this is a desktop OS for normies. Not for us hardened sysadmins. Let me know how I can help Devuan specifically, I put a link to devuan by default in the browser after install. I also rave about devuan on the website and elsewhere, not sure how else to help at the moment.
