why peppermintos?

hello,
my question is what differences between vanilla Devuan Xfce and PeppermintOS?

Re: why peppermintos?

Peppermint Flagship basically comes with just a web browser, & if I remember, file manager & terminal, leaving the user to download their choice of other programs.

Devuan comes complete with web browser, office suite, video player, music player, etc; basically Peppermint Fully Loaded equivalent.

I'm not a user, but did try it out a while ago. They use both Debian & Devuan distro bases.

Thanks for reply.
If so minimal differences why standalone distro for that? Many Peppermint power can go to development of Devuan.

Re: why peppermintos?

mostly for future thread visitors, links for your consideration and convenience:

wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peppermint_OS

circa 2010, Mark Greaves(rip):
https://peppermintos.com/2010/05/we-are-different-we-offer-freedom/

https://peppermintos.com/2024/07/weve-partnered-with-foss-torrents/
fyi: included the below link and the above link mostly because the fosstorrents main webpage is cool, eye-candy, and a virtual cornucopia. enjoy with moderation as always!
https://fosstorrents.com/

download information:
https://peppermintos.com/download-and-install/
cautionary note: the above download webpage has direct links to immediate downloads(which you may/may-not be comfortable with, ymmv) so here is their sourceforge page without the automatic stuff. furthermore, what happens when one of these/those automatic downloads overflows and crashes the users hard-drive/machine/etc!?!
https://sourceforge.net/projects/peppermintos/files/isos/XFCE/

see also the screenshots and comments(especially Himanshu near the bottom/end of webpage):

epilogue: it is quite fitting that i have stumbled across this thread at this moment in time. i have currently been working with an octogenarian widow who desperately wants to be rid of the insanity of microsoft windows(and also smart televisions as well...but that is a totally different adventure/saga/story...oh, and don't forget the crazy voip phone, ugh). her current predicament is not for the faint-hearted or physically-feebled indeed. anywho, not quite the same situation as the screenshot webpage commenter mentioned above(Himanshu).

thank you for your precious time, dear reader/visitor.

edited to add: kicking the fosstorrent weeds and saw that they even have tribblix! outstanding!

Re: why peppermintos?

As someone involved with the PeppermintOS project, I’m genuinely happy that we’ve been able to introduce many users to Devuan. We often get questions about the differences between Devuan and Debian, and why we’d recommend Devuan over Debian.
And since some of us develop directly on Devuan, we usually have plenty to say LOL!

These days, we even hear things like, “Debian is cool, but when is Devuan coming out?” That kind of curiosity really shows a growing interest in non-systemd options.

What stands out most to me personally is the Devuan project team and this community. In Peppermint, we dabble in different base operating systems, we reach out to their maintainers, asking about build tools, getting a feel of what’s involved. Out of all those experiences, the Devuan community has been by far the most open, helpful, and approachable group we’ve encountered at the core OS level.

From guidance on branding and ISO compilation tools to troubleshooting fsroot issues, everyone here has been incredibly generous with their time and help.

Honestly, other communities can be gatekeepers, toxic, or just plain mean… but the Devuan folks are a breath of fresh air.

I also know our community is patiently waiting for the upcoming Devuan release,  and from that perspective, the excitement and anticipation in some ways is how we give back to Devuan itself.

Thanks to you all and for what you do, please keep up the great work!

I'm happy to see that someone involved with Peppermint is here on the Devuan forums. I wonder if you can tell me, will Peppermint ever release versions with other DEs in addition to Xfce? Specifically, Mate.

Re: why peppermintos?

If we can find a maintainer willing to work with the DE in the pipeline sure...

We are close to an Openbox in the pipeline I think we found a person willing to work that in...
Of course XFCE is in there , and  we do have a gnome-flashback....

Re: why peppermintos?

The strength of Devuan is its use of XFCE - but I would still like to see a smaller .iso with maybe just WM & Firefox, but the devs have enough on their hands, I believe, just keeping systemd away... wink

Re: why peppermintos?

The devs have made it as simple and versatile as it needs to be.
Use a netinstall iso, unselect the default selected packages, complete the install and reboot, log in on the command line and 'apt install' only what you want.

For sure, build your own custom system, then use Refracta-tools to roll your own hybrid-iso.

The tools and base material are all there and work great and are ever being improved, easy even for a novice user.

The hard part is figuring out what you want your custom iso to look like. wink

https://sourceforge.net/projects/vuu-do/ New Vuu-do isos uploaded October 2025!
Vuu-do GNU/Linux, minimal Devuan-based Openbox and Mate systems to build on. Also a max version for OB.
Devuan 5 mate-mini iso, pure Devuan, 100% no-vuu-do. wink Devuan 6 version also available for testing.
