Welcome to Devuan pumpkin_pie!

https://www.devuan.org/os/install is a good place to start.

And this forum does have a search feature.  wink

Please do let us know when/if you ever figure it out.  wink

#3 Re: Off-topic » Debian looking to switch to the non-GNU Rust based uutils » 2026-07-07 19:52:54

Please, please focus on finding something useful to contribute to Devuan rather than flapping gums.  wink.

#4 Re: Off-topic » Debian looking to switch to the non-GNU Rust based uutils » 2026-07-07 19:21:05

Why are you even touching Lunduke's nonsense and taking it seriously? You are all over the place and seem to have no guardrails and it concerns me that you will step in a big pile that will negatively impact Devuan. Please take it down a notch. You are not qualified to speak for or about Devuan in any way. Please try to find something to contribute to Devuan that will actually be useful . . .

#5 Re: Off-topic » Debian looking to switch to the non-GNU Rust based uutils » 2026-07-07 17:28:58

Personally, I would not trust ANY assurance/statement coming from Debian and it concerns me that you would even consider accepting it at face value.

Please do let us know when/if you ever figure it out.  wink

#7 Re: Other Issues » Other sources of documentation » 2026-07-06 22:37:37

Thanks rbit . . . I had totally forgotten about that page since I'm not maintaining Devuan's websites anymore.  smile

As of today, if I were to say, "I have a few hours to spare, let's see if I can help transform a package from Debian to Devuan" I couldn't name a single one in need of attention because there isn't written wishlist anywhere.

That is not how Devuan works. YOU need to ACTIVELY frequent places where bugs are reported like https://lists.dyne.org/lurker/list/devuan-dev.en.html and if one suits your skills, take it on and fix it. Didn't rrq explain that to you a few posts up?

I second that most excellent idea! It still works fine for me on Daedalus but sooner or later . . .

#10 Re: Other Issues » Other sources of documentation » 2026-07-05 22:27:33

Greetings Uityyy! Nice to see you on the forum . . .

Devuan contributors are 99% self-motivated. Since only you know you skills and interests, wouldn't it be more logical for you to hang around and if you see something that needs attention and piques your interest, just do what needs to be done and submit the fix? There are very few times I have ever asked someone to do something and then only after knowing them for some time. IOW . . . this is not a top down organization where we assign projects. If you see something that needs attention perhaps discuss it on our channels then just do it or not.

Sounds like a job for a PHP programmer who's into web development! wink

Several decades ago, I was lured into using PHP for parts of my websites and got badly burned by upgrades that would break the sites and require extensive reconstruction. On one complicated site, I went through the hassle of moving all that php data to a very long list of text archives that would never need to be touched again. They haven't needed any maintenance/reconstruction since then.  big_smile

Someone has quietly been working on the 4th or 5th attempt to create a viable wiki for several years. The only one that had any value (IMO) was the first which was self-hosted by a user and admined by a few of us who have been here since the fork. We eventually burned out and there was actually very little value in most of the content created by individuals scratching their own itch instead of content that would  be valuable to other users.

IMO a wiki is a low priority project for Devuan. We need more hands on deck capable of dealing with the transformation of packages from Debian to Devuan and avoiding the onslaught of challenges being thrown at us by Debian and their corporate masters nearly daily. Focusing on a wiki is a bit like fiddling while Rome burns . . .

Awww . . . thanks greenjeans and Altoid but I'm not sure for what because I gave up reading steve-v's abusive, fantasy-filled tirades a long time ago. I am so removed from the low-life "culture" in which he swims that the insults he churns out would likely go right over my head. I want to associate with the best of the best not the dregs of our devolving species. wink

#14 Re: Off-topic » [SOLVED] Why hasn't sysvinit been abandoned yet? » 2026-07-04 16:43:34

Now I get your nic. Hopefully you'll grow up some day .

#15 Re: Off-topic » [SOLVED] Why hasn't sysvinit been abandoned yet? » 2026-07-04 16:18:29

If it works, don't fix it. Shiny new s**t just stirs the pot and is a waste of time and resources IMO.

Hey stargate-sg1-cheyenne-mtn . . . Thanks for finding and updating the link to Steve Litt's most excellent resource. Another reminder that things are in constant flux . . .

#17 Re: Packaging for Devuan » Repackaging Debian packages » 2026-06-14 14:08:21

You do not need to add Debian repositories to Devuan and in fact should not do that because all Debian packages that are compatible with Devuan are already passed through to Devuan with this bit of "Amprolla Magic":

A brilliant and oh so helpful observation . . . NOT . . . roll

#19 Re: Devuan » More systemd is coming - what is the plan? » 2026-06-09 20:11:02

Have you ever considered creating such a solution and submitting it to Devuan for review?

#21 Re: Forum Feedback » Please consider not using stopforumspam » 2026-06-03 17:36:21

When D1G was launched, I was the spam hunter and it never stopped. Something had to be done. Our current system has worked quite well for many years and makes very few false positives. And please remember that we had no control over the choices YOU made that landed you in SFS . . .  smile

#22 Re: DIY » simple login gui » 2026-06-03 15:51:37

Seems you have done your homework at least . . . Still no trust on this end though from the company you keep . . .

#23 Re: DIY » simple login gui » 2026-06-03 15:48:26

I find it interesting that the other "noob" here who is a smooth talker but has contributed absolutely nothing of value to Devuan, is so vocal about what Devuan is and isn't. Something is just not adding up but the words "hostile takeover" keep flashing in my thoughts.

#24 Re: DIY » simple login gui » 2026-06-03 14:45:57

Please have a look at this summary of a presentation from the Devuan conference in 2019 which describes "amprolla magic".

"What is amprolla and what does it do . . . or not do?  At the First Devuan Conference in April, Katolaz' presentation "The Quest for Minimalism" answered these questions.  This audio of the amprolla section enhances understanding of the screenshots below."

Pure genius!
