#851 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » network manager, couple questions » 2022-04-02 10:13:47

The OP can try the old init script:

# curl -o /etc/init.d/network-manager https://salsa.debian.org/utopia-team/network-manager/-/raw/debian/buster/debian/network-manager.init
# update-rc.d network-manager defaults

#852 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » network manager, couple questions » 2022-04-02 10:01:13

NM won't be able to auto connect because it won't be auto started. Debian have removed the init script for that package.

If the OP has /etc/network/interfaces configured correctly for eth0 then NM is just useless bloat anyway.

And once more for the OP:

I wrote:

Have you checked the NM logs?

Other logs are available :-)

I would my script (.OneTime.sh) launch a terminal for the user

See also https://wiki.debian.org/Xsession & https://xyproblem.info/

Alternatively use XDG autostart:

mkdir -p ~/.config/autostart
cp /usr/share/applications/xfce4-terminal.desktop ~/.config/autostart/

I think Xfce has an autostart GUI buried away somewhere in their menu labyrinth.

Enable and disable Networking via MN is help.

How do you do that, exactly? Please post the exact command(s) used.

NetworkManager should ignore anything listed in /etc/network/interfaces anyway so you should be able to connect fine without it.

However the sid/ceres network-manager package doesn't supply an init script any more so it won't start automatically. Yay. See my thread in the "Freedom Hacks" [sic] section for a guide to generating and using a new init script.

So was sound working under chimaera? Were your settings saved there?

#856 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] Generate a sound / beep / tts from CLI ? » 2022-04-02 09:29:59

For a simple beep try

printf '\a'

There's also aplay(1) & speaker-test(1) from the alsa-utils package for music files and random noise, respectively.

Have you checked the NM logs? I don't use it myself but I presume they're under /var/log/.

What is the network hardware & driver?

lspci -knn | grep -iA3 net

Why do you think you have different versions? I can only see v1.36.4-1devuan1 in your two (identical) posted links.

I presume you mean Devuan ceres? The Debian sid repository should not be mixed with Devuan unless you know what you're doing.

deepforest wrote:

How fix that?

Copy the init script in this post to /etc/init.d/alsa-restore then run

# update-rc.d alsa-restore defaults

#859 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » What games do you play on Devuan?? » 2022-03-30 17:08:38

Assetto Corsa Competizione via Steam Play (Proton). Very narrow focus (GT3 only unless the GT4 & cup car class DLC is bought) but very deep. I'm rubbish at it but it's still very enjoyable, even with a PS4 DualShock controller or just a keyboard. I'm sure it would be amazing with force feedback wheel & pedals and a VR headset.

#860 Re: Off-topic » What are you reading/want to read ? » 2022-03-30 16:59:12

Ghost Stories of an Antiquary by M R James. The collection includes The Mezzotint and "Oh, whistle, and I’ll come to you, my lad", both of which were recent BBC productions. I had the pleasure of transporting a freaky doll's head (in clear plastic wrapping, no less) for the latter film. Scary.

#862 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » How do you get stubby to actually work? » 2022-03-30 09:45:18

The package doesn't supply an init script but it seems to work if stubby is run manually so see https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=4865 for a way to generate and enable an init script from /lib/systemd/system/stubby.service using sysd2v.sh.

#863 Re: Devuan Derivatives » [SOLVED] Is it safe to clear out /media folder of old sd(x) references? » 2022-03-11 09:16:53

Does a new entry get created if you plug a storage device in? Check the logs afterwards to see what's happening.

I think Xfce should use GVFS to create user-owned directories under /media but your "old references" were all root-owned.

I installed gnome with this command: sudo apt install task-gnome-desktop

Check the logs to see if any packages were removed for that operation. I've had both GNOME & Xfce working under Devuan chimaera so it should be possible.

This should re-install the full Xfce desktop:

# apt install task-xfce-desktop

#865 Re: Other Issues » Secure /etc/passwd ? » 2022-03-11 09:08:09

SpongeBOB wrote:

No. The actual passwords are encrypted and stored under /etc/shadow as per passwd(5).

SpongeBOB wrote:

I change it to 640

Change it back. Many utilities use that file to map user IDs to user names. It should be world-readable.

EDIT: use pwck(8) & grpck(8) to verify the integrity and validity of /etc/passwd,/etc/shadow & /etc/group.

#866 Re: Installation » Keyboard layout change doesn't take effect (Devuan 4 Chimaera) » 2022-03-08 22:02:43

Try

# dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration
# service keyboard-setup restart

#867 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] surf browser lots of warnings » 2022-03-08 19:47:31

# apt build-dep surf

Then run the make command again.

Build dependencies can be removed afterwards with

# apt purge --autoremove '*-dev'

but that will remove all -dev packages. If you don't want that (check the list before accepting the removal) then use the APT history to delete them manually. Or just leave them installed, they only take up a few hundred MiB of disk space.

EDIT: or use

# apt install devscripts dpkg-dev
$ apt source surf
$ cd surf-*
# mk-build-deps --install --remove

Then build surf from git and remove the dependencies afterwards with

# apt purge --autoremove surf-build-deps devscripts dpkg-dev

EDIT2: always check the output before accepting when --autoremove is passed because you might fall victim to the metapackage problem.

Debian bullseye again, this time with openbox:

2022-03-08-135711-1920x1080-scrot.png

It has runit as the service manager & runit-init as PID1; systemd is not installed :-)

#871 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] Beowulf kernel upgrade oddity » 2022-03-08 13:39:31

@OP: can we see the full output of

# apt update

I see this when I add beowulf-backports to my Debian bullseye system:

$ apt policy linux-image-amd64
linux-image-amd64:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 5.10.92-2
  Version table:
     5.10.92-2 500
        500 https://deb.debian.org/debian-security bullseye-security/main amd64 Packages
     5.10.92-1~bpo10+1 100
        100 http://deb.devuan.org/merged beowulf-backports/main amd64 Packages
     5.10.84-1 500
        500 https://deb.debian.org/debian bullseye/main amd64 Packages
$

So version 5.10.92-1~bpo10+1 should be available.

Just a bit afraid to trash it accidentally.

It should be fine connecting the receiver line out ("pre out") to the valve amp line in ("aux"), just be careful with the volume setting on the receiver. They're both line level, which should be limited to a maximum of 2 volts (the CD standard).

Valve pre-amps tend to swing more volts than transistor pre-amp stages which might be a bit more risky so if you try the mono subwoofer output keep the volume on the valve pre-amp low at first.

Just don't try to connect the speaker outputs to a line level input wink

#873 Re: Installation » Multi-DVD installation sets » 2022-03-08 13:01:35

There is also the debian-cd package:

Debian-cd is the official tool for building Debian CD set since the potato release. It was formerly called YACS (for Yet Another CD Script).

Its goal is to facilitate the creation of customized Debian CD sets.

I've never actually tried it but it looks like it can do what the OP wants.

See https://salsa.debian.org/images-team/de … easy-build and the other README files in that directory for some guides.

And simple-cdd offers a more basic approach that may be more accessible for the n00b.

#874 Re: Off-topic » Anyone a audiophile...questions? » 2022-03-07 20:20:58

You could connect the receiver "pre out" to the valve amp "aux" phono input actually. Then connect the valve amp outputs to the (stereo) speakers.

All that lovely second harmonic valve distortion might actually make the receiver sound better but the signal would go through two pre-amp stages (plus wire and connectors), which isn't ideal.

#875 Re: Off-topic » Anyone a audiophile...questions? » 2022-03-07 19:03:38

zephyr wrote:

Is it possible to have these two connected?

Only by using the subwoofer mono output with a 2:1 phono connector. Unless the valve amp has a headphone output that I can't see, in which case you could use a headphone jack to phono stereo connector.

Note that the linked DaytonAudio device is actually an integrated amplifier with a valve ("tube") preamp and a transistor power amp stage.
