started Ashenden by WS Maugham
in the Preface he shares some observations about the differences between facts and stories
Fact is a poor story-teller. It starts a story at haphazard, generally long before the beginning, rambles on inconsequently and tails off, leaving loose ends hanging about, without a conclusion. It works up to an interesting situation, and then leaves it in the air to follow an issue that has nothing to do with the point; it has no sense of climax and whittles away its dramatic effects in irrelevance. There is a school of novelists that looks upon this as the proper model for fiction. If life, they say, is arbitrary and disconnected, why, fiction should be so too; for fiction should imitate life. In life things happen at random, and that is how they should happen in a story; they do not lead to a climax, which is an outrage to probability, they just go on. Nothing offends these people more than the punch or the unexpected twist with which some writers seek to surprise their readers, and when the circumstances they relate seem to tend towards a dramatic effect they do their best to avoid it. They do not give you a story, they give you the material on which you can invent your own. Sometimes it consists of an incident presented, you might think, at haphazard, and you are invited to divine its significance. Sometimes they give you a character and leave it at that. They give you the materials for a dish and expect you to do the cooking yourself. Now this is one way like another of writing stories and some very good stories have been written in it. Chekov used it with mastery. It is more suitable for the very short story than for the longer one. The description of a mood, an environment or an atmosphere, can hold your attention for half a dozen pages, but when it comes to fifty a story needs a supporting skeleton. The skeleton of a story is of course its plot. Now a plot has certain characteristics that you cannot get away from. It has a beginning, a middle and an end. It is complete in itself. It starts with a set of circumstances which have consequences, but of which the causes may be ignored; and these consequences, in their turn the cause of other circumstances, are pursued till a point is reached when the reader is satisfied that they are the cause of no further consequences that need be considered. This means that a story should begin at a certain point and end at a certain point. It should not wander along an uncertain line, but follow, from exposition to climax, a bold and vigorous curve.
obviously, to paraphrase Orwell, 'All alternatives are effective, but some are more effective than others.'
the 2nd one really made a difference

or just copy sda4 to sda3 then delete sda4 and expand sda3 if you don't have a backup medium. But you really should have a backup anyway.
thank you, hoas!
that was my idea, though, I was not sure which directories can be skipped.
btw, skipping some of the directories is just to save some time because the current installation is 8,5GB.
Hello everybody!
Several months ago I wanted to test Devuan and installed it on a small partition (sda4).
I liked and want to keep it but the partition is full.
So now I want to move Devuan to a bigger partiton (sda3).
I have already installed it on the bigger partition.
In order to skip all the manual adjustments would it be enough to copy (rsync) /etc, /usr, /home directories?
If that is not enough what else needs to be done?
Thank you in advance!
p.s. Regarding the packages since I don't have copies of all of them in /var/cache/apt/archives/
I guess I will have to manually install them, right?
Thank you!
Was not sure about dependencies and compatibility but your word was enough as a guarantee.
p.s. Works fine.
Logged into my Arch and tested both browsers 'vimb' and 'luakit' with 'fb' and youtube' and there is no such issue. There is no running processes left after closing either browser.
Sinse I am posting this from my Arch I decided to check 'webkit' version for comparison. (Just in case.)
~ # Qs webkit2gtk
local/webkit2gtk 2.34.3-1
Web content engine for GTK
~ # Qs luakit
local/luakit 2.3-1
Fast, small, webkit based browser framework extensible by LuaBefore logging into Arch I tried Artix's browser 'epiphany' (via usb) which is also based on 'webkit'. It did not have such issue either. All processes stopped running once the browser was closed.
Hello everybody!
I would like to suggest one package that is available for 'ubuntu' and 'mxlinux' to be adopted by Devuan and made available in the repos.
'foliate' - e-book reader with many features including highlighting and annotations, nice gui, reads most popular formats
Thank you for the excellent distro!
p.s. if this is not appropriate or not allowed, please delete the post.
that's kind of disturbing... anyway, thank you for sharing!
back to the original issue in regard to that new info...
I tested both 'luakit' and 'vimb' with 'fb' and 'youtube' separately and both leave 'webkit' processes running after closing the browsers - the difference is that 'fb' leaves two processes while 'youtube' leaves one process running... I hope someone knowledgeable will figure out how to address this issue cause right now I have to manually kill those processes every time I close the browser...
Hello everybody!
Got some freezes lately while using either 'facebook' or 'youtube'. Because 'moc' is usually runng I noticed it starts with chopping the sound and then the system freezes. Because I alternate 'luakit' and 'vimb' I wasn't sure which browser to blame for this. But today 'moc' wasn't playing and I got only 'vimb' open on 'fb' - one window on 'fb' and one window on another website. So I closed 'vimb' I checked the 'task-manager' and 'htop'. Both showed 'webkit process' still running.
Interestingly enough, after I opened 'vimb' to post here those processes are still running yet 'vimb' is working fine while 'moc' is playing.
How to proceed to prevent this from happening again?
@Head_on_a_Stick

well, it did not give any error messages so I thought there must be something wrong with the installation.
reinstalled everything and made sure all the engines appear in the engine window.
now it works.
p.s. this is the second or third time an app works differently in Devuan from the way I am used to it in Arch. probably my expectations are playing tricks to me.

Hello everybody!
Installed 'scid' plus 'phalanx' and 'toga' but still get 'phalanx or toga not found' message when try to play a tactical game.
Any ideas what else is missing?
Thank you in advance!
