star 64 is a genial minimal installation! but I don' t see where is the keyboard management!

what is for me a complex keyboard?

that can be

- us intl
- de ch
- in tam
etc.

where or how to introduce those 3 keyboards (name in 2 steps "us" and "intl"  for ex.) as well as the key combination to select one of those in devuan star 64?

#227 Installation » (devuan star 64) how to change the /etc/alternatives properly? » 2021-10-17 20:41:04

devuan star is really a genial minimal installation!

changing a few number of applications can give to the system really more power:

- nemo is for those having a strong hierarchic organisation of their files a better view as "tree" works very good in nemo (as well as icon symbols for the files also in the overview) ; the amount of occupied hard disk, the "price" also, of this change exists, yes, but it is very low

- seamonkey gives to the system the advantages of firefox without restriction plus

> good mail client (the direct continuation of the email management of the old real Mozilla suite!)
> one of the two unique HTML editors with wysiwyg ability
> great managiement of the window surface as you can shut down and restore 3 top bars hitting only 1 time each bar on the virtual key left. it is VERY precious for all using often graphic applications in the web (maps, ways routing, pictures processing etc.)
> (probably able to manage) IRC for those using IRC
> breaks the monopolist position of firefox ;-) else it gives access to the same comfort!

but the standard access to those functions in the (good organized) JWM menu is through the etc/alternatives! I am not accustomed to change those parameters as usually the /usr/share/applications/*.destop do that for the user!

and in the manpages as well as on the web, no concrete example to find for those two classic as well as most frequent changes (I continue to use willing also xedit, as well as gv! I am accustomed with the special view on the docs and keys usage and can work fast with both; I know, it is not so frequent... but I also will interchange it). it seems (in an English discussion at an ubuntu blackboard that perhaps the browser can not be through /etc/alternatives.

how to manage correctly those 4 little adaptations problems?

note: I did of course try if I can do it with update-alternatives but without success, perhaps because I did try it on the x-www-browser, see above comment found in the ubuntu blackboard. or why i did not understand really the manpage! this is the reason why I would prefer a concrete example...

I did try it. ISO written directly with DD on a USB stick.

starts perfectly after moving into the RAM and fast, fast, it is best...

a probably complete Deepin scope of applications

I did not find more documentation or user reports.

the first question each one will probably have: can I add applications and remaster somewhat and re use them next start?

as real Devuan fan (as I am) the second question would probably be:

can I do the same with conventional app's from Debian through the repositories from Devuan?

#229 Installation » minimal installations: what is the minimal way to install sound » 2021-09-19 21:31:44

in my precedent installation, I did directly install pulseaudio. no sound!

later I did read here in that forum, some parts of alsa sound is a ABSOLUTELY NEEDING dependency sine qua non!

why not in the dependencies of the package?

next difficulty is that there are a lot of doc's in the web speaking about that problem but all speak / report on «alsa» and nothing more...

but there is no package (or pseudo package) with the name «alsa» in devuan!

why?

sound is a VERY IMPORTANT figure of an installation!!!

a distro where you meet difficulties on that figure can't be good!

Hi

Star did install Urxvt. It is a good terminal. But the view of the text is very to small (generally: in the terminal as well as in terminal applications like nano, my prefered editor). Second problem is the choice of colors in nano (accentued, of course through the fact that the size of text is to small).
Is there a REALLY easy way to change that how to desinstall this (in my case not operable) application without benefit for me?

(actually, I log into an other console in using CTRL+ALT+F2 the size of those texts as well as the colors in nano are best for me! it would be enough to extend the settings of pure console to consoles in Xwindow! Why complexe if it would be so simple? The problem changing the console is that you can't compare two or 3 texts at the same time!)

Thank you very much larsH

I did install between my 2 last messages a bit more but I did loose the overview about what I did.

But: the sound did work until I did shutdown for lunch.

Restarting it was away again :-(( !

Restarting once more, I did see a short time a boot message appearing in red (difficult to see as my computer is so fast and my English is bad! The boot system from Linux is really archaic!!! Why messages you don't can read!!! It is absurd!!!

Restarting one more, I did see just the time to understand it in my bad English:

the kernel modules adapted to the oss (open sound system I did install with other little packages like alsa-tools, alsa-utils etc. after an action

# sudo apt search sound

have not the adequate module for oss.

this is a really tricky situation for me as it did never happen in all the years I use Linux (since 1995 ;-) ...

I did never have to manipulate the content of kernel...

Is that easy or will I have to spend for nothing a lot of time in a matter having not really the profit of?

can I get a adequate ready to use kernel somewhere?

Is OSS (or alsa) a MUST dependency of pulseaudio? why did pulseaudio not work immediately well as installed without that chaotic more installation?

sound is a very very important performance today for each OS. in SID I did not meet such a problem (but did not install very minimalist from Devuan Star, of course, but from a weekly ISO with, theoretic, XFCE4 who was not able to be installed...

Hi rolfie

Thank you very much.

There is no such file in my installation: If I try to open it, it is empty!

I did create some one with only this line but as it is a commented line, I don't hope it can be usefull...

The package pulseaudio in Devuan seems to be really uncomplete ...

(no really enough dependencies... no settings....)

to install it as tested in RAM.

(as SliTaz did use such ways more than 15 y. along ( see pls https://doc.slitaz.org/en:guides:uncommoninst ) I assume that it would be possible to proceed analogue with other distributions. Ok with the initrd split like Russian dolls (justCLI, CLI, CLIwithSliTazCLItools, justX, current), SliTaz is going / did go a bit wider as all other distros)

actually only the install ISO's from Chimaera are beta.

are the other one's also coming?

(I would find the "live ISO" 's more useful as installations ISO's if they would contain links or elinks as well as a collection of howto.html's for

- installation through debootstrap,
- installation from an utility to split the CLI screen in two half,
- start from wlan / wifi / internet / networking from CLI
- add or change the shell language
- proposal from everage / wider CLI installation (as links or elinks already present: alsa stuff, nano or vim if not also present (has not to be if it is possible to post install them "live" exact as the user prefers!), sc, didiwiki (is the best smart writting system in links! fatt, italic, underlined are possible, tables also, perhaps pictures in text if using some system graphic extension as it was possible in the past to use the browser arachnea also in linux!), cups (yes cups is working well in CLI!), sc, plot, wordgrinder etc.)
- proposal for minimal graphic extensions / minimal X start for ex. through ratpoison (man pages have to be present in the packages, better more pages with examples of usages)

such html pages are very compact and a set in English is no ballast for such a minimal iso (less ballast as two or more editors or CLI browsers!)

in continuation of my message https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=4415 concerning more debootstrap than the files attributes in the actual partition, I show for a way to erase the attribut "i"

I did find a long a very interesting article

https://www.informatik-aktuell.de/betri … r-rwx.html

in German giving following informations:

Das Attribut "i"

    root@stefan:~# lsattr datei1.txt
    ----i-------------- datei1.txt

    root@stefan:~# echo "Eine zweite Zeile anhängen " >> datei1.txt
    -bash: datei1.txt: Keine Berechtigung

    root@stefan:~# ls -l datei1.txt
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root stefan 27 27. Jul 18:02 datei1.txt

    root@stefan:~# rm datei1.txt
rm: Entfernen von "datei1.txt" nicht möglich: Die Operation ist nicht erlaubt

    root@stefan:~# mv datei1.txt datei1a.txt
mv: Verschieben von "datei1.txt" nach "datei1a.txt" nicht möglich: Die Operation ist nicht erlaubt

    root@stefan:~# chattr -i datei1.txt
    root@stefan:~# rm datei1.txt

this command chattr -i is really the solution, the file is now erased!

Hi

is there some Devuan wiki with perhaps a specific page about debootstrap?

Thank you very much for the infos conc. the second part of my problem (the old protected Deepin file in the partition).

denk_mal: very good info: the file has 2 flags: ----i---------e---- !
I have now to find a way how to erase them...

chris2be8
mount | grep /mnt/sd8
1234:~# ┌─( root ) » { ~ }
└──┤

I suppose it is not.
but reformat is not a good idea because it does not preserve the other files present the drive.

better would be for me to remove the 2 flags...

but I think actually about the sens or nonsens to reinstall directly in that partition....

(although the problem stay the same concerning the blocked file: why preserve files without use on the disk if I reinstall using debootstrap?)

Thank you very much
+
kind regards

EDIT later: the problem with the flag -i is solved, see separate message https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?pid=30705#p30705 . I know need only the info conc. debootstrap itself

available?

really possible?

howto (available)?

in the (about) empty partition that I will use there is a file present I will not hold in it but the power of "root" is there not enough to eraste (not trash) it:

Could not delete file :"deepin_serurity_verify.whitelist".
Error removing file /mnt/sda8/var/lieb/deepin/deepin_serurity_verify.whitelist: Operation not permitted.

How to force to erase it before I install fresh without to format (as I will preserve my other files in that partition! It is important for me!)?

does Devuan itself format the installation's partition

- in normal case?
- installing through debootstrap?

#244 Devuan Derivatives » build Devuan as Devuan Derivatives Distribution » 2021-07-10 09:40:57

oui
Replies: 0

I did look at the title of that subdivision of the forum trying to find experimentation to make some Devuan a bit different from Debian concept and more some kind of

- build per (fully documented) compilationś way from Scratch
and
- as kind "Devuan live"
- to start completely hosted in the RAM and
- using a files management adequate to add on fly parts of system eventually stored at an other place (usb drives and memories or images from harddisk(s) an CDRW / DVD) and used directly there (or at demand after copying also into the RAM) using for ex. aufs.

This work exists partially.

The first part could be some kind of http://www.buildyourownlinux.com/#title0 (at this project made on the base of LFS and later probably from BLFS! But a (now very) old alternative proposal exists also at SliTaz, old software at http://download.tuxfamily.org/slitaz/iso/1.0/ and old book of  the build from scratch at https://www.slitaz.org/en/doc/scratchbook/).

The three terms of the second part is some kind about the Debian live as it continues to be realized as Debian-Dog offered and supported at the Puppy Linux forum https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewforum.php?f=22 (but the ISO management using "caspers" is the better as the one using "live" as it is more flexible: you can install more parallel systems!).

Why?

Different reasons:

- you does not need different partitions for different systems and block so without profit a lot of HD capacity in each partition
- starting out the RAM makes old hardware a lot faster. The corona crisis did show how urgent the need of hardware is not only in poor countries of the planet but also in divers groups of the population of rich countries! it is scandalous to make millions or perhaps billion of existing PC obsolete only for economical optimisation of profit!
- saving sessions is very nice, really. But it is also the reason of intrusion and indiscretion! RAM only powered systems are absolutely discrete and can be comfortable: you burn variables into your ~/  directory including some ~/.mozilla etc. and can use a lot of preset parameters and values including url's of bookmarks etc.

I hate now those usual OS's saving all values the user are not aware about!

over the base proposed at http://www.buildyourownlinux.com/#title0, it would be important to also define some kind of «justX_&_minimal tools and utility» consequent without ballast. my view on it would be:

such (Just-)Essential app's are in my eyes:

all development tools including for the use of mouse (point and cupy/cut/erase functions) and internet wired / wireless connections incl. minimal but enough securities, and, of course grub with explanation what is the minimal configuration of it as first grub installation but permitting later to add more exigent (concerning grub) other distributions

    X

ratpoison can be enough (or jwm for those not willing to accept that!)

    sound

xterm, xli, xcalc, xedit but also nano (it was long years along the uniformed text editor at SliTaz and can be used for text block processing as the stuff of external text files can easily be used at editing time), ranger (eventuell with files "preview"), wordgrinder would be a good add as it can convert text files in pdf, latex file etc.

    links2

or

seamonkey as browser, email client, irc client, wysiwyg html editor, and address book

    magicpoint as presentations tool

Xine or analog basic app for video (depending of the graphic base used)

    xsane

mtpaint as minimal base to shot printscreens and modifiy then

    osmo

with that equipment, you can begin to use daily a linux in graphic mode yet without printing.

(already named) seamonkey would be with hunspell, cups, tesseract-ocr, gimagereader as well as small fonts (loadable on demand! why to install fonts for the all world!!!), as well as pulseaudio as well as a music editing app (for children! I am astonish don't to find it in some linux installing directly about 10 GO immediately!) a next step just over just-essential!

you now have a presentation of my intention.

if it would be possible to split virtually the keyboard,(both half at the left side, alt. both sides at the right side, in case of hurt at the other hand, and back to normal keyboard function, if you don't find the right keys for special signs lile @[]/^"'¦) it would probably be a great help as in linux no "via voice" is available!

perhaps we have some *deb ready (develop with one hand would be illusion now!) to do that (as i use the normal us or better the us inl keyboard for ex. through setxkbmap, not some keyboard of a limited location like de, fr, ch de or ch fr!)?
