The r8152 driver has trouble within the 4.19 kernel:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … bug=919656
can I install lightdm safely on my system?
I know that you already installed it, but I would like to show a theme I did for webkit2 greeter:
http://pedroreina.net/desarrollos/tlwg/
I'm using it with Beowulf.
it occurred to me that "desktop" is an odd label for a computer which sits on the floor under the desk
Very funny. I've been there: http://pedroreina.net/montaje/pentium233.jpg
Wellcome to the forum.
This is a bit strange: I just restarted the installation not in expert mode, but with 'install' (first option on first screen). It now gives me all the filesystems options that I'd expect, including ext3 and ext4.
May be in expert mode you accidentaly skipped one screen. I did it sometimes and went to bizarre situations as you described. I prefer the expert method anyway, but sometimes a small error gives you trouble: just be aware.
Anyone an idea where to start looking?
Have you tried to start Nautilus from a terminal? May be some message there.
The problem is very random.
In my experience, random behaviour is very often caused by faulty hardware.
does not load consistently
Could you support this with some log messages? Or describing the inconsistent behaviour?
Good thing the default is 'Y' so the Enter key is all one needs
The "-y" option is handy too.
Same behaviour here.
How about autoselecting the non-HDMI output for "non-"laptops? ALSA doesn't do that.
I dislike "autoselecting". But I can select the non-HDMI output with ALSA configuring it. There are a lot of info about that.
right-clicking on the icon does not provide a menu option to remove it.
May be your widgets are locked. Try this:
On the panel, click secundary mouse button, Unlock widgets.
I've tried searching the forum using "Alternatives to Virtual Box" but not coming up with anything. ... Do people find Qemu workable?
It seems so:

I don't want to go down the VMWare
I dont need VMWare since a lot time. In 2005 I had to buy a license because I did not find an alternative. Not needed anymore. YMMV.
Some evolution . . .
I like it. Thank you for your work.
Thanks for replying but that does not work
I'm sorry. It seems to me that your install is kind of broken. Of course you can reinstall (I did it a couple of times years ago), no problem. But most likely it can be fixed.
The file /etc/apt/sources.list should be owned by root. Once that is fixed, you can try the commands that gdebi-gtk suggests.
I think that you are taking about the file virtualbox-6.1_6.1.16-140961~Debian~buster_amd64.deb. It should work on your Beowulf box. I have installed VB from deb archive a lot of times (not on Beowulf): it works, but you need to compile a few kernel modules afterward (there is an assistant for this). If the tildes on the name are a problem, just rename the file after download it again.
Also, you can find in this very forum options to VB. A lot of people here dislike VB and explain alternatives that can work for you.
Run gdebi-gtk again?
Yes, they are keeping a central quite complete archive.
Thank you. These are very good news. Very long term support can be very useful to people running old systems. Sure they have security concerns, but any sysadmin should know the risks. My point is that beeing able to apt install more packages in an old box is very convinient.
and will probably be there for a long time to come
I read time ago that removing binaries from archive was planned, but I saw just now binaries even for the very first version. Do you know something about the removing of binaries? Thank you.

This is a very personal taste and a lot of people here are going to customize their environment. But we need a default. This one proposed pleased me very (VERY!) much.
the camera is recognized and photos come up!
Good!
it seems however that when installing gphoto2 ... is not enough as it does not install the dependencies.
I need to research a bit about that. I always just install gphoto2 and have no problems so far.
i just checked on my older T60 running debian wheezy, and there the camera is perfectly recognized.
Please note that your Debian Wheezy is using gphoto2 to access to the camera. May be you are missing some package related with gphoto2 in your new box.
Everything is all good now.
Good to know. But may be developers should know about this problem: an user run the program but get no messages at all.
What a life, eh? Must be a fix out there somewhere.
Quite sure Keep sending us information.
I am having issues with cmus player. The basic problem is that it doesn`t start.
What should I do?
May be if you start the program from a terminal you will see some error messages. If so, post that messages.
the camera has a 32gb old sd-card (the bigger ones) and probably no flash memory.
I downloaded the manual from Sony:
https://www.sony.com/electronics/suppor … 14571M.pdf
I can read on page 27 that the camera has around 27 MB of internal memory.
Could work for you just read the files from the sd-card? (As a workaround).
the PTP/MTP is not being recognized
Have you tried gphoto2 -P?
