[...] Spaced Linux 10.26.2

Hey guys!

I'm the main dev behind SpacedLinux.com

My goal is to make an EASY TO USE devuan rolling distro that just works out of the box on all hardware.

And so far I think we've mostly nailed it (other than a recent AMD xorg deprecation, which I'm still researching how to resolve best).

If you guys have a better devuan rolling desktop out there somewhere:  Let me know.

We've had about 7,000 downloads since inception in July, and were at one point #28 on distrowatch, even beating FreeBSD.

I'm currently working on seamless samba/windows networking, and fixing the AMD/xorg deprecation, maybe by moving to xlibre.  Still in the research stage on both projects.

Version 10.26 should work pretty well on all hardware without issues.

It works better on real hardware than in a VM, although the VM should work fine as well, it's really designed for direct hardware and display integration via Compiz/Mate.

Cheers guys, and thank you for my favorite base OS: Devuan Ceres

Re: [...] Spaced Linux 10.26.2

I posted some thoughts in this thread: https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?pid=66038#p66038

But one thing I forgot to mention, been working with Devuan-Mate + Xlibre since last year, and only issues I had were that it didn't want to play nice with compositors on my old hardware, and secondly they've dropped some packages for older AMD hardware (mostly pre-2010 stuff).

https://sourceforge.net/projects/vuu-do/ Vuu-do GNU/Linux, Devuan-based Openbox systems.
Devuan 6 mate-mini iso, pure Devuan, 100% no-vuu-do. Now with Xlibre as well.

Re: [...] Spaced Linux 10.26.2

i see, just gonna throw a couple of thoughts, linux mint uses the lightdm slick greeter since the mint team considers the gtk greeter unstable and unsuited for production use, there have been a lot of changes in the kernel in regards to amd graphics since last year so it is completely possible that a config that worked in an older kernel will not work with the most recent kernel in ceres, what message does xorg put out when one of these installs switch to a different tty and try to run startx?

on a tangent, how are you doing sound? what gathers detractors from pipewire is the fact that for the 3 programs (pipewire, pipewire-pulse, wireplumber) to work correctly they need to be "user services", systemd does that via user units, runit can do user services, openrc also has user services (but i think only devuan ceres got a version of openrc that can do user services), i personally ended up writing my own implementation of user services that works completely independent of any init to have pipewire "just work" on my setup.

@crhylove I believe you mentioned Spaced Linux includes or make it easy to install the proprietary Nvidia drivers. Do you already have a deb packaged version of the 580.178.04 drivers that are necessary to solve the 90 CVEs found recently in older versions of the Nvidia drivers such as those available in the debian repos?

From the locked thread:

"..this is a desktop OS for normies.  Not for us hardened sysadmins..."

Why are you working on and marketing a derivative to make it "easier" for Joe Average?

What's in it for you?
