Also UEFI install problems

Hi

Hardware:
mb: msi h97 gaming 3
cpu: intel i7 4970
gpu: msi nvidia 1050 ti

Having the same problem as Areulos with Daedalus 5.0.1 uefi install. Mbr/bios install loads fine

Net-install uefi doesn't boot, just goes to black screen after being selected in boot menu and hangs
Desk-install uefi seems to work but i'm having x-server fails to start but i'll look into that later.

Used to run Daedalus 5.0.0 uefi and installed debian uefi (using now) with everything booting normally

Bios doesn't show a secure boot option and idk how to get it to show.

Using uefi+legacy

used rufus and gdisk+dd,both formatted for gpt

Re: Also UEFI install problems

In computing terms that motherboard is ancient and likely does not support TPM.
Check the motherboard manual and check your firmware is the latest.

Re: Also UEFI install problems

Ancient or not something once worked and now doesn't,especially since devuan is a debian fork and the latest debian works fine unless i'm missing something
Also it supports tpm since it has a connector for the module.
Updated firmware already and still didn't work.

Do you have a module plugged in ?

The installation media will install itself in the same mode that it is booted in.
Turning off Legacy is one way to ensure it boots and install in UEFI.

Re: Also UEFI install problems

Not sure, don't know what one looks like, need to check the board display in bios.

Turning off Legacy is one way to ensure it boots and install in UEFI.

Tried and didn't help. Changed to defaults and defaults has uefi/bios. Also i installed Devuan 5.0.0 using those settings.

What can could cause 5.0.1 not to work when 5.0.0 worked?

Re: Also UEFI install problems

I have never had any different issues booting\installing between 5.0.0 and 5.0.1 installation media.
Just use 5.0.0 and dist-upgrade or full-upgrade to 5.0.1

Sorry, can't help further.

Re: Also UEFI install problems

Could be something related to older hardware that they might have changed since the OP has a similar problem...

5.0.0 net and desk installs are gone but live installs are still 5.0.0 so i could use that...

Anyways thanx for your help.

@sun skin only, you got your own thread. If you want to pursue any one of the range of issues you voice (or maybe all at once), you may continue on this thread.

Re: Also UEFI install problems

@ralph.ronnquist, thanx

@golinux, sorry about that. I joined (or hijacked...not sure) the thread because it seemed like it would seem like bloat to make a new one for a problem that seemed similar.

So I have a functioning DE Devuan install but

Net-install uefi doesn't boot, just goes to black screen after being selected in boot menu and hangs

,though I'm not going to pursue it.

I think the issue is there isn't a nouveau driver like Debian so i get sent to text mode. After installing nvidia drivers (and remembering to enable my DM) i get sent to gui mode.

Please correct me if I'm wrong somewhere.

Re: Also UEFI install problems

if you have a DVD drive , would consider trying that one, since has helped me several times with devuan 5.0 where the USB failed.

Re: Also UEFI install problems

The Devuan installer is a pure text based installer, it does not need any graphics driver like nouveau ...

I never had any issues booting 5.0.0 or 5.0.1 on one of my PCs, no matter if legacy or uefi, except for when using Ventoy.

My guess: your PC has some strange configuration that does not like the basic settings the installer uses. Maybe related to your NVidea card (I only use AMD). And if 5.0.0 works, install with it, an apt update/apt full-upgrade installs everything to the latest version in the repo.

Re: Also UEFI install problems

Sorry, to clarify, I installed Devuan net 5.0.1 uefi successfully via usb.

But it booted me straight into multi-user mode whereas using Debian i boot straight into GUI mode.

So the issue seemed to do something with the video drivers because after installing them properly for Devuan, I was able to boot into GUI mode.

Re: Also UEFI install problems

I had that Daedalus install problem as well on several different machines. Never could figure it out. But I installed Chimaera instead and immediately changed the sources and upgraded to Daedalus. Working nicely since, on all of them, though not an ideal way of installing .
