The manual process of removing systemd dependencies from packages is either difficult or tedious, given the long delays between Debian and Devuan releases, and it doesn't yield desirable results, given that Debian and Devuan packages aren't compatible.
Excerpt from https://www.devuan.org/os/packages
Devuan package repositories are exclusive. Other repositories, including Debian, Ubuntu, Mint etc, should not be used directly.
Have you looked into using Portage to automatically remove systemd dependencies from packages and, in the fashion of Calculate Linux, distribute those compiled systemd-free packages as binaries?
The current development of Devuan (and other forks of corporatized operating systems) is the same as the process of "de-bloating" proprietary operating systems, common among Windows users.

Clarification: Debian and Devuan packages are not incompatible. They are exactly the same packages. We filter out and fork the packages that require systemd. If you use debian sources with devuan sources, you'll still get mostly the same packages, but you won't have the filter, and you'll probably screw up your system by installing things that do require systemd.

Addition: Devuan pulls in all Debian packages on a regular basis, filters out the systemd related stuff, adds the replacements where applicable. They end up in a "merged" repo which must be used to update any Devuan system.

Thanks, both of you. Now, I see the use case of Devuan.
You should add
Packages from Debian's repositories are not incompatible, but they shouldn't be used without careful consideration.
or something along those lines to https://www.devuan.org/os/packages

Hello:
You should add ...
I beg to differ.
The only Debian packages compatible with Devuan are the ones you will find in the Devuan repositories.
No consideration needed, it has already been considered by our devs.
Now ...
If you see a package in the Debian repositories but not in the Devuan repositories it is either because a) it is being sanitised* or b) because it is not compatible due to systemd requirements.
* something which can be a truly time consuming endeavour for our devs.
Then you have *.deb packages which are not in the Debian or Devuan repositories.
In all probability, there are very sound reasons for that being so.
Those are the ones that "shouldn't be used without careful consideration" or not at all.
Just my 0.02.
Best,
A.

Dropping here for pdbq's enlightenment . . . a graphic of the Debian packages that are banned in Devuan:

For sure, I can only imagine what a task that must be, hoping one day I can learn enough to help with it.

Will it ever get to the point where it just wouldn't be feasible anymore for Devuan to be based off of Debian? If it ever gets to that point, would Devuan go totally independent, or is there too few developers for that?

No crystal ball here but . . . nothing lasts forever.
It is painfully obvious that our species is devolving, increasingly incompetent and with brains that are not functioning properly. Few under 60 are capable of doing the required tasks and those of us who gave so much are burned out and feeling the weight of our years.

There is always hope, I myself reached the requisite age mentioned by golinux not long ago, lol, so it's time soon for me to step up and be of real assistance with Devuan. There will be others. almost 100 distros listed on Distrowatch that do not use systemd. And Xlibre has stepped up to renew X11 so buggy wayland won't be forced on us.
Linux was always about rebels, corporate interests trying to wipe out choice just spawns new generations of rebels, who are especially pissed that the aforementioned corporate interests are sticking their noses into our beloved OS'es.

@golinux well of course, this world will eventually die, although... we will all likely be gone long before that happens.
The #1 problem with humanity is that we all want to have our way and feel justified in our ways and views.
Humanity would be peaceful if we didn't have such a tendency to get trapped by our egos.
The root of all evil seems to be rooted in the arrogance that exists within all people. Not one human in this life can erase their arrogant side. To do that would require us to be complete perfection and that is still impossible.
Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. Feelings are not facts
