Update: New Vuu-do 5 Mate-mini uploaded 12-20-2024, all that Vuu-do magic but with the Mate desktop instead of Openbox. More info in the readme and release-notes available at the link: https://sourceforge.net/projects/vuu-do … Mate-mini/
Update: New Vuu-do 5 maximal uploaded 12-14-24! This is built on the minimal and includes all the extra programs the Vuu-do 1 maximal contained with a couple of exceptions:
Brave - browser
Brasero - CD/DVD burner
and added Minesweeper for purely nostalgic reasons.
Also added Intel microcode and bluez-firmware. I did not throw the whole kitchen sink of system-config-printer and assorted older and new cutting-edge firmware, that will be for another version, and possibly a fully translatable version of the maximal with assistive and language support.

Vuu-do 5.00 (daedalus) minimal is now available. Vuu-do isn't a distro, so i've never done the whole alpha/beta.release candidate thing, I usually just fix stuff and upload another one. But for clarity let's call this a "beta".
Non-uefi, this has grub-pc onboard, you can likely change that during live-session before install by installing grub-efi and un-installing grub-pc, but I have no way of testing it. Would be awesome if someone with a uefi-machine could test that.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/vuu-do/files/Vuu-do-5/ 655 mb iso and sha-256, release notes and package list available at the link.
As always, this is a project, user-spin, experimental. It has been localized for english and UTF-8 and lacks some accessibility features. To re-enable translations you would need to build from the ground up, or else re-install a lot of packages in an installed system, but that's totally do-able if you're motivated.
This is the minimal, no browser or media or office programs, just the infrastructure and some helpful utilities. And of course Refracta-snapshot and Installer.
At it's heart, this is still and always will be, a user-spin of the original Miyolinux I first tried in 2017. It's all modern, but still contains modded original MIYO artwork and theme choices. And absolutely conforms to the philosophy I share with Miyolinux: MAKE IT YOUR OWN!
It's fast, light on resources, works wonderfully on the laptop I built it with, a circa 2012 cheapie with an AMD dual-core APU. It should work then on almost any machine made since then and likely many made years before as long as you have a 64-bit processor and at least a gig of ram.
This is far more complete and elegant than Vuu-do 1, I really went the extra mile with everything. Check release notes for details or have a look at my threads.
Been a long time coming, and a ton of work...Special thanks to the VUA's and the whole Devuan team and the members of this forum for all they do and the help they've given me.
Extra-special thanks to Miyo (Dan), Golinux, and the amazing Fsmithred, who make it all possible and have supported me every step of the way.
Also shout out to coffee, cheap walmart whiskey, and CBD gummies for helping me power though these last few weeks.
EDIT: It's like one of Murphy's laws that 5 minutes after you upload an iso, you'll remember one little detail you forgot, but it's so small it's not worth rolling up a new one. In the release notes on the iso, I forgot to mention in the "changes to su behavior" section that I applied the fix to revert to it's old behavior in Vuu-do. The release notes file on Sourceforge has been corrected. You can just use "su" , no need for "su -".

Just ran the first test iso and i'm stoked, goal was to keep it under 700mb (for the mini, no way I can do that when I make the maximal), first run is 625 mb.
Yeah i'm a dinosaur, I still like burning iso's to CD.
That makes me happy, got a little breathing room, and there are some other small utilities that I can now include that are worthwhile.
Refracta-snapshot didn't want to work at first, as it turns out when I loaded some additional firmware and it updated the initrd, it didn't abide by the initramfs.conf file and converted it from zstd to cpio. So rather than make a new initrd image I downloaded the newer 10.4 version of snapshot and installed and it worked like a charm. Thank you for the thousandth time @fsmithred!

Well done, greenjeans!!

Thanks my friend! It's been good for me, learned a LOT of new stuff along the way so it was worth the effort for that alone.
Updated and cleaned up the Sourceforge pages a fair bit, still have some more to do though. Am taking a small break right now, but about to begin work on the maximal version, but that should be fairly easy, the real work is in grinding out all the configs in the minimal.
Weird calling it a minimal when it's actually larger then the maximal of Vuu-do 1, the times they are a-changin'.......

I just can't help myself, it's like a 7 year itch, once I start it's hard to stop.
Yesterday I built a Vuu-do Mate mini and rolled up the iso late last night, testing it today. It wasn't bad at all as i'd already laid the groundwork, I built it off the openbox mini so it already had all the hardest stuff done. And best of all I just barely made it to CD size, 699.5 mb!
Just installed core Mate packages plus useful caja right-click options, was already using Pluma and Engrampa anyway, but I didn't throw the whole Mate kitchen sink at it, for good reason, actually used some different options for some things.
The EOM mate picture viewer, task-manager/system monitor, calculator, and screenshot additions together are over 100 mb of stuff, just to do simple tasks.
Gpicview, LXtask, Galculator and Scrot do all the same stuff basically, and together are less than 10 mb and work much faster. Even got all my regular choice of keybinds working great.
It's dang fast for Mate, not quite as quick as Openbox, but very nice. Not sure i'm going to do a maximal version though. Maybe.
Right now the menu is super-quick, but in a full version the svg icons slow it down and make it glitch (at least on my low power machine), svg icons i'm seeing these days are much smaller and better than they used to be, but still for major programs i'd need to make png copies in several sizes and use those instead to stop the menu issues on older machines like mine.
Still pondering the idea of a fully translatable version of the openbox max. But man, that's probably an extra 600 mb of stuff when all is said and done, and I have never tried to change languages on a machine, don't even know how and wouldn't be able to test properly if I did, I speak a little Spanish but not enough.

happy holidays everybody!
Indeed! Winter solstice is happening right now. Will make it to US tomorrow morning. Rejoice that at least some things in the universe are predictable . . .
