@andyprough: does X still run under root with slimski? EDIT: yes, yes it does. I'm blind.

Hello. This is sway or dwm?
What economists call over-production is but a production that is above the purchasing power of the worker, who is reduced to poverty by capital and state.

^ Nice!
Rare tiled shot of my sway desktop:
Firefox on the left with three foot panes on the right running oksh (showing pfetch), htop and vim (showing oksh's startup file).
And if anybody here is also a member over at forums.debian.net please point sunrat to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … bug=996503 in respect of the pictured thread. TIA.

My old login is still working, and even though I'm too cool to post there and sunrat is openly hostile to me, I'm willing to do you this one favor in the spirit of Saint Nicholas. What should I tell sunrat? That wayland is dead, long live Xorg? That Lennart has gone over to the dark side and that all Debian users must immediately abandon ship? That he needs to switch to gdm if he ever wants to see his precious bloated plasma desktop again? All of the above?

Cheers.
What should I tell sunrat?
Just a simple "HoaS thinks this bug might be relevant — can you get to the desktop with `startx` from a console login?" will suffice. @sunrat is a smart cookie so I'm sure they can take it from there.
EDIT: does your Pale Moon version carry the original branding?

Too late, I left him a confusing mess of a message. He'll probably give up completely on Linux and buy himself a Mac.
No, I make my versions of Pale Moon unbranded, per the Pale Moon trademark requirements. It's just a short 'disable branding' line or something like that in .mozconfig.

Thanks Andy, much appreciated. Also: trolling and helping in the same post? Very nice

I had something similar a few days ago, I had assumed it was a plasma issue at first, (I use plasma at work only - in fact I only use Linux at work) and after deleting the mess of configs, ~/.cache , ~/.kde5 - and then when that didn't work, doing it all again and then rebooting eventually "solved" it.
Not the first time I've had such issues. Plasma 5 just seems overly complex and unwieldy.

Fleeing tyranny as well eh? Wait until your account over there gets sadistically deleted by the resident tyrant. He likes to utilise his shiny new plaything to the full...

Very nice genxr :-)
My usual Arch desktop:
Firefox, Steam and two foot terminals running oksh locally and mksh over ssh to my music player.
I've just updated the upmpdcli package for Debian buster:
https://software.opensuse.org//download … e=upmpdcli
Upstream does have a buster repository but the current version won't build for buster because they've added a configuration GUI. My version strips out the GUI and Spotify support but does build for buster. Yay.
Running mpd & upmpdcli on the ROCK Pi S music player lets me stream Qobuz to it (and then to my DAC) from my smartphone using BubbleUPnP. Very civilised.
EDIT: 10 bonus points to anybody who can identify the book I'm reading in Firefox. No Googling!

Without Googling, I could see the URL and a quick poke around gave :-

which was a bit of a give-a-way!

EXE GNU/Linux running X under the normal user:
It's very simple to upgrade the security from stock:
$ echo '[ "$(tty)" = /dev/tty1 ] && exec startx > ~/.xsession-errors 2>&1' > ~/.profile
# update-rc.d tdm disable
# /etc/init.d/tdm stop
Then log in at the console.
The same method can be applied to Devuan's Xfce desktop, the only difference is that uses LightDM instead of TDM (or maybe it's SLiM, I can't remember) so disable that instead.

@Head_on_a_Stick
Maybe I'm wrong, but for EXE in this case, obviously, you need to add a rule file to /etc/logrotate.d.

Merry xmas devuan/dev1galaxy.
Giving conky a try for status stuff. I was using slstatus but patched dwm to fit in a conky status bar at the bottom, not a dzen bar this is pure conky.https://i.postimg.cc/mz59cNjm/2022-12-25-202954-1920x1080-scrot.png
Wow, how did you do that? The thing I hate about conky is how normally useless it is on DWM, but you've fixed that.

It is useless as a top bar, definitely need something dzen so as to mix with the statusbar if you still want the number tags.
I used dwm insets patch here: https://dwm.suckless.org/patches/insets/

Fedora Silverblue:
I love the idea of an immutable base system with custom overlays but the disk usage is not cool. That system is just installed and it's already used up all 10GiB. Devuan uses 3-4GiB max, even with a full desktop. No surprise though, that's what happens when the applications are mostly flatpaks.

The fact that you have no programs open and are already using 1.4GB of memory is also pretty hilarious. But, that's Gnome for you.

I've got 32GiB to spare so memory isn't an issue. I was intending to create a sway overlay for a bare base system but I only have a 500GB hard drive so it looks like I'll just have to create a Silverblue clone in Arch instead. Hey ho.

It even adjusts the desktop resolution automatically to fit the window. Very civilised.
Sadly it did not find find the wallpaper option that would best fits that resolution . . .
Offline
Yes, I was surprised not to find a 1920x1054 wallpaper option
But seriously, 1080p is probably the most common resolution for laptops so it would be nice to see wallpapers of that size.
