It is so awesome that no support threads are required.

But hey, it's not just the devs — the users obviously know what they're doing as well :-)

Point taken...

Either way, I decided to respond in a different thread if that helps,

I am hopeful I was at least somewhat on topic.

I can't said anything bad about testing/daedalus either.

Indeed ...

I'd add that there are 10 pages of unanswered posts to which no one had anything to say.
The last two pages being from this year.

Best,

Same here. In fact it is so stable that after couple tests I made a bold move and switched main production machine to daedalus.
So far the only thing that borked itself were old AMDGPU-PRO drivers (20.40) which I don't need that bad as of now. Still waiting for 5.14 kernel with RT patch, so I can try to install newer versions.

Don't use those, the open source amdgpu driver outperforms it for almost all tasks.

EDIT: I've got a PRO video chip and I don't use the PRO drivers.

Re: It's a sad day . . .

Open drivers don't have OpenCL support. And I need that.
Also I have installed only OpenCL parts of AMDGPU-PRO. Display is handled by mesa, and indeed it's great.

You have perked my curiosity, what do you need opencl for and/or the proprietary blob for? I am curious.

If you don't want or feel like telling me though, feel free to tell me.

It just sounds odd to me, given that those blobs are like mystery software.

hmm

Re: It's a sad day . . .

GPU rendering in Blender require OpenCL drivers if you have AMD GPU, otherwise Blender won't see your card at all.
However with recent Cycles rewrite AMD will have completly different backend (HIP) and OpenCL was dropped. We (Blender users) still don't know what drivers we will need or what hardware will be supported, as HIP implementation isn't finished.

So blender doesn't work with open source drivers... well okay.

That's a shame, but meh, it is what it is eh, at least for now.

Blender works fine with open source drivers but it can only use CPU rendering. The proprietary drivers are needed for rendering on the GPU. It's the only thing the open source drivers can't do.

Re: It's a sad day . . .

@zapper Blender's interface, viewport and pretty much all that is displayed on a screen is OpenGL based. That works fine on mesa drivers! Most functions require CPU compute to perform operation on data, and the GPU is used in couple places to accelerate that compute side - like rendering final image/frame. OpenCL drivers are needed to enable this on AMD hardware. Do not mistake display rendering in a form of pushing frames to the display render buffer on a GPU to be passed on screen with rendering of the final product like image or animation that you export and save on a disc.

As to Blender. I spent a lot of time learning how to use it on OpenBSD in order to use its video editing capabilities. After finally "getting it", OpenBSD added Shotcut to their repos (which is my preferred video editor). neutral   big_smile   tongue

Re: It's a sad day . . .

Blender works really well in Linux if you use Nvidia graphics card.

I don't have any good experiences with AMD graphics card. To build a graphics workstation two years ago, I bought two brand new AMD graphics card. After spending a full week of troubleshooting instability issue of the AMD graphics card, I had to return them to the seller.  I bought two used Nvidia graphics card on eBay for the graphics workstation.

Rendering 3D models requires decent graphics card for GPU computing.
