The synaptic package was removed from the Debian buster repositories because it doesn't work under a Wayland session in GNOME:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … bug=818366
As beowulf is derived from buster then it has been removed from there as well.
Try this for a replacement:
# apt install aptitude
# aptitude -u
Ncurses ftw!

I'm sure that it will eventually return. Be patient . . .

I'm sure it will be corrected, ncurses aptitude is good (compliments HOAS), if you are not anathema towards KDE programs then muon is a nice alternative to synaptic.

Wayland is futureless non-working garbage made by incompetent wannabe-programmers. Only idiot can remove working package in favor of wayland.

You might want to read this blog post:

Well it certainly doesn't make much sense in Devuan, I think golinux is right and we'll see it back at some point.
Not that I would miss it...

No, he don't. Most of those "misconceptions" are fictional conclusions suitable for "debunking". I can tell a lot about wayland and X11. However, for this topic it's enoung to mention very demonstrative fact: 10 years of development without result. So no, it's wrong to remove a package because it doesn't work with wayland. According to that argument much more packages should be removed because even with XWayland not everything works properly.

I hope so.

Looks like it keeps out of debian as long as they have wayland as default. See:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … =818366#45
And the synaptic bugreport - the developer asks for help refactoring due to being short on spare time.
https://github.com/mvo5/synaptic/issues … -357439865
Anyone here interested in packaging it or help upstream? Guess I use aptitude for now, if I need to; not so often luckily.

I hope it will stick around...I kinda grew-up with synaptic - [sniffle..]
That muon reminds me of bsd's pkg gui...but, naaa - KDE programs...nadda for me
Guess it'll fade away...like allot - of package description, are...fading...disappearing...

The package is back in Debian buster with a new error message for Wayland users and an added dependency on zenity:
https://packages.debian.org/source/buster/synaptic
I presume it will be added to beowulf soon.

I can confirm that Synaptic is back in Debian Buster/Testing...not that I would have first-hand knowledge or anything like that.

Well...I was temporarily upgrading to sid/ceres to get synaptic in testing/beowulf. That's my analysis, and I'm stickin' to it!
