#1 Re: Devuan Derivatives » Is there a Devuan derivative targeting old hardware/laptops? » Yesterday 11:10:13

Any lightweight Debian distro, e.g. https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=lilidog and migration https://www.devuan.org/os/documentation … libur.html

It is as easy as this.

Or generously shared config for WM from this forum https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=5742

Or just https://antixlinux.com/ which can be aslo switched to use Devuan's package base.

Plenty of options.

#2 Re: Freedom Hacks » About installers » Yesterday 10:53:43

My argument is (and always has been) that refracta-installer needs a consistent UI

refracta-installer is half-garbage. No correct FDE support in 2026, seriously?! UI is not a problem here.

#3 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] ext4 write slow on small 120gb sata SSD » Yesterday 10:50:03

2012 actually, don't hate, how many SSD's last 14 years?

I've one from 2013, still in use. It has all chances to live more than 14 years. This old laptop had 7200 Rpm HD but it was too slow smile
My other machine has 2 slots for HDs, so I use 1 SSD for root, for VMs and model to start them quickly and 1 HD for downloads and data storage.

It can be a pleasure to apt-get purge systemd

The skepticism toward AI today parallels the Soviet-era rejection of cybernetics.

It's possible that it was just propaganda to make West to believe in it.
They were first or among first in AI. The soviet AI called Pankrat and some soviet ideas probably got their second birth in Deepseek.

#7 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] ext4 write slow on small 120gb sata SSD » 2026-02-14 15:40:12

I see all you need is to drop promotions for your "best" thing for no reason, just because you like to promote.

This thread had nothing to do with i/o schedulers, nobody asked which one is the best.
When told out of left-field that something is "The best" (without an "in my opinion"), asking for some proof isn't unreasonable.

You don`t want to get the idea:

I share here some of my foundings that are good, interesting or better than default. You can just note that is not for you.

I`M NOT A SELLER. You can use it or not, read the docs or not, test or not, I don`t care.

#8 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] ext4 write slow on small 120gb sata SSD » 2026-02-14 14:56:43

steve_v, I see all you need is to discuss for no reason, just because you like to discuss.

ADIOS is just Adaptive Deadline I/O Scheduler. It means that it`s scheduler, just another (better) scheduler. Not default linux scheduler but new better one. It is designed to optimize I/O operations in Linux by providing low latency through adaptive latency control and dynamic deadline adjustments based on past performance. It also effectively prioritizes requests and groups.

You are not forced to use it, OK?

I share here some of my foundings that are good, interesting or better than default. You can just note that is not for you.

#10 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » virt-manager qemu/kvm install excalibur » 2026-02-14 14:42:58

steve_v   ...not at all but I`m too lazy to discuss

which is  much easier with a type-2 hypervisor like VB

VB on KVM is still VB and nothing else. It uses VB guest additions, not virtio and Co, etc.

#11 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » virt-manager qemu/kvm install excalibur » 2026-02-14 09:23:35

Multiple options are good.

There are only 3. (without XEN which is not linux but rather xenux, without bosch etc). The third one is bought by corporation worth than Oracle or similar and closed source. The second one can be used simultaneously with the first one when it use hypervisor from the first one (KVM) = take the best from 2 worlds.

This is exactly what I`ve wrote already.

P.S. As always, everybody is free to use whatever s/he likes and everybody is free to give an advise based on h.. own experience.

#12 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] ext4 write slow on small 120gb sata SSD » 2026-02-14 09:08:11

Benchmark numbers or it didn't happen.

You can do it on your own.
I got the effect.

Yes, the best. There are no concurrents smile

I like it, you can ignore it. It works. No overhead, just better I/O processing.

#13 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] ext4 write slow on small 120gb sata SSD » 2026-02-13 21:50:39

1. The best ssd accelerator for Linux:
https://github.com/firelzrd/adios

2.

encrypted install

If it's not AES then it's too slow.

#14 Re: Freedom Hacks » About installers » 2026-02-12 11:38:29

Has anybody tried the Calamares installer?

Yes, I often install Debian than convert it to Devuan. The installer is GUI clean and works. Also Debian is 100% supported by ventoy.

#15 Re: Devuan » Kde and Systemd - In the News » 2026-02-11 19:57:08

Yo do not understand what you talk about the openrc IS in Debian,

I understand. And more, I understand that openrc and all other than systemd inits are half-banned in Debian. Why would Debian like to develop them? There is no reason.

#17 Re: Devuan » Kde and Systemd - In the News » 2026-02-06 23:43:55

OK. But Debian  is systemd while Devuan is not. Devuan follows Debian. It's OK,  the idea is clear. But why does Devuan follows obsolet versions of inits that are not inits in Debian? Here is the difference between Debian and Devuan, why not to improve init? It's done already in other linuxes so it should not be very hard.

It's funny, Oracle decided to move towards KVM https://github.com/VirtualBox/virtualbo … 3848644498

They could not do it before because of the lack of resources. Oracle .... But other people could smile

KVM is better.

#20 Re: Off-topic » XFCE is building a new WM and compositor for Wayland » 2026-02-06 19:20:35

But if my assessment is wrong then please enlighten me.

You are right. But if they will adopt wayland and KDE will fall down with systemd cancer, then I'll be able to switch back to xfce smile

Wayland is not ready and will never be, but it has no problem with scalling and control when multiple displays set up is in place.

#21 Re: Devuan » Kde and Systemd - In the News » 2026-02-06 19:12:16

figure it out yourself" for pipewire

why there is no support for user services in openrc? Pipewire starts by services at least in alpine, artix and gentoo. Who knows

#22 Re: Devuan » Kde and Systemd - In the News » 2026-02-06 19:09:27

Pity.

Only KDE and Cinnamon support HiDPI displays. Some stuff look ugly under xfce and Co while scalled. Gnome is over and the game over. Budgie (which scales excelent) is broken in Excalibur/Trixie (pb. adding items to panel).

#23 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » virt-manager qemu/kvm install excalibur » 2026-02-06 18:56:26

https://blog.programster.org/kvm-missin … lt-network

just start the network permanently with

virsh net-autostart default

What does this

sudo usermod -a -G operator <user>

do?

check your /etc/libvirt/libvirtd.conf/etc/libvirt/libvirtd.conf

It’s worth to have there

unix_sock_group = "libvirt"
unix_sock_rw_perms = "0770"

in

/etc/libvirt/qemu.conf

set

user = "user"
group = "kvm"

Do not forget to add user to aall this groups: kvm,  libvirt, *qemu*

then rc-update add libvirtd
and
rc-service libvirtd start (if you are using openrc, if sysvinit or runit then find appropriate commands to enable service)

After reboot you'll have started networ "default", running libvirt and user wil be granted access to use virt-manager and virt-viewer (I find virt-viewer more comfortable to run VMs, then virt-manager which is more suitable for creating them).

Also note that uefi can be broken in virt-manager. last time I have to copy uefi bios from somwhere and I don't know if thhe situation have been changed since.

If  you are looking for alternatives you can try  https://github.com/quickemu-project/quickemu  and GUI for it https://github.com/quickemu-project/quickgui

The gui will download and install guest for you. You can also copy uefi bios from this install in the cse you need it for virt-manager and you can run all these guests in parallel (virt-manager/viewer and quickemu).

More of that you can use https://github.com/ivan-hc/VirtualBox-appimage - this is an appimage of virtualbox that use KVM as hypervisor, not Oracle's core component!  It can be run in parallel with qemu, aqemu, quickemu, virt-manager etc.

Have fun.

why for working at Windows i do not need read documentation,
because all works out from the box,
working at Windows much simpler than at Linux,
that boring, and time to time i use Linux as puzzle game for brainfucking smile

Why not use windows though?

Or, ... at least Zorin?
