#151 Devuan Derivatives » Devuan derivatives and XFCE4, LXDE etc. and spell checking » 2023-07-12 22:16:45

Divers derivatives mixe her standard minimal scope of pre installed packages taking a this one in LXDE, that one in XFCE$, the next (MC, geany are good examples but there are other one), etc.

The result often is that at the end an important functionality is loose: SPELL checking!

Person as I, having never learn the English language must renounce to do better at this level...

Or does a list of applications exist for the applications really automatic connected with the hunspell system (it is in the most cases present!) and easy to install over the scope of preinstalled packages?

20..22 s after boot, I can use the new 32 bit full installation entering my pseudo name (I did use "f"  as this key is left hand, better for me as I need the right hand for other jobs, because this key is one of the two keys on my keyboard having a little point to recognize the key without to look ;-) ...) and my actual fast logiin password (".", as it is the key, excepted space bar, that I can reach blind best!).

42..45 s. after boot from USB-snapshot-ISO (having 1.8 GB size!).

NO OTHER DISTRO is so fast on my PC...

It did become important since the USA promote war in Russia as I turn off my PC a lot of times each day (what I did not do before that idiotic war) to spare energy!

analog to my action yesterday with Crowz, I did spend the day today to upgrade Star 32 bit from Beowulf to Daedalus with exactly the same scope of applications as yersterday with Crowz excepted anbox (probably not available at all in 32 bit?). I did have to install an other video editor, but I have one in my new installation.

I did procede in progressive steps so I have a version in Chimaera only the same base as Star (excepted base of the refracta tools and deborphan), a other snapshot  iso full with all the same app's as yersterday. And that one did be upgraded. The size of the snapshot iso is now 1,8 GB. I am interesting to see how it will start on my old PC's ;-) ! If not, I have the Chimaera version to test also!

Non-English people will have to add some files in /us/share/fonts, or .../hunspell, or .../tesseract-ocr to make their keyboard and spell usage adequate. and they will have to adapt the commutation of her keyboard. in Puppy Linux, I use both to do that:

- xorg.conf (as Puppy Linux continues to be full compatible with it ;-) ! Thank you Barry Kauler!)

- the Xfce4 settings to interchange one of the 4 keyboards hitting on SHIFT+CTRL.

This seems to become terribly difficult in big distrtibutions ("Zu viele Köche versalzen den Brei...")!

Attention: Crowz install only a part of the ttf fonts of the familie Liberation!

why do linux app's more and more have 2 names (nemo = files, or epiphany-browser = web)? it is nonsens pure!

Yes I did start the from USB memory card reader stick the snapshot but not in the RAM (although it would be easy on my PC but the start is to long...). From (very old memory card SD 2GB) the start is acceptable. Not to slow.

But it would be faster from hard disk of course. Which start procedure in /etc/grub.d/40_custom is to use to start the iso from harddisk?

I did open a few minutes ago my .bash_history and the application did mark the wrong spell places in the doc.

I did try to open «aout» to see which app nemo (I prefer nemo!) did open for that very simple hiden text document. In «about», that document does not say where it is! I suppose it was abiword. In this case, the spell checking in abiword would work correctly.

but the other applications (internal editor window's from the 3 installed browsers (epiphany, luakit, midori)? and the main text editor, mousepad?

as I did never learn English, it is a very important function for me! Actually, no spell checking seems to work in «midori». You poor reader of my literature!

(which system I am using now: Crowz64Daedalus started from USB stick!)

This evening, I have do an decisive step using Crowz. If no error messages will appear in the future ( ;-) ) I have 2 64-bit installations and 2 refractasnapshots starting well.

each one for

- crowz based on Chimerea updated to the actual level

snapshot size 1300 MB

- crowz, the same installation, but upgraded on Daedalus.

snapshot size 1700 MB

It is of course a lot more that the initial size of 710 MB.

And I did have a lot of new tentatives to reach this (for me in my eyes) actual success.

The last ones did happen:

- installation from more packages: using sudo apt update and sudo apt install x y z
- upgrade to Daedalus: using synaptic (do not forget to open the «DETAILS» windows and answer all with «keep» excepted «restart all deamons» Y !

My .bash_history:

sudo apt install deborphan xli menu jwm refractasnapshot-base refractainstaller-base aqemu winetricks anbox midori didiwiki luakit wordgrinder-x11 mgp cups xsane tesseract-ocr gimagereader samba mtpaint mhwaveedit nted granule kturtle swi-prolog gforth marble-qt merkaartor olive-editor gramps librecad thunar nemo abiword gnumeric osmo gnucash gimp inkscape aeskulap

a lot of app's for families with children, the poor persons in Linux!

and the rest of the bash_history:

ln -s /usr/bin/mousepad /usr/bin/ed
mousepad .bash_history
sudo umount /mnt
sudo mount /dev/sda6 /mnt
xrandr -o left
xrandr -o normal
setxkbmap us intl
mousepad .bash_history
sudo refractasnapshot
cd /mnt
ed .bash_history
sudo refractasnapshot

Why that?

I take care about the content and order in my bash_history: it is my memory what I do and how I do that ;-) !

Actually, the boot time with vdev as device manager is optimized for runit only (indead, the default init system shown by choose-init-udeb in the installer-isos), and according to my analog tests, the times recorded do not substantially differ when compared to eudev. However, I have in mind to extend this optimization for other inits, although I won't do that until august. In the meantime, if you are running gnuinos with vdev and sysvinit, I suggest that you either change the init system to runit (apt-get install runit runit-init getty-run) or that you replace the device manager with eudev (apt-get install eudev).

While I'm particularly happy with vdev, there is room to do things in the project. For example, another possible idea I'm considering is to unify both libeudev and libudev-compat in a way that the behaviour of the shared library will depend on the running device manager. It wouldn't be that complicated. But I'm aware that I made some mistakes in the past during the vdev integration that might have broken the system, and I'll ensure that it never happens again. Thanks for your patience!

Thank you for your long explaination (that I can't follow: those details are not known by me)!

I suppose you will publish new versions of gnuinos and I will wait as long and will rapport to you later how I see the matter in the coming new version.

install the refracta tools for ex. using synaptic

make a refractasnapshot

prepare an USB stick with that

start the usb stick: immediatly after start, the snapshoted system offer to change the language with no ballast (other languages create a real ballast in your installation. installiere die Refracta-Werkzeuge (mit Hilfe von Synaptic)

- new partition
- format fat16 , yes 16, not 32 (under 4 GB iso SIZE)
- set boot flag (don't forget that!)

with the konsole:
dd if=~/Downloads/devuan_daedalus_5.0.0-rc2_amd64_netinstall.iso of=/dev/... status=progress (change the ... into the target found by gparted BUT WITHOUT THE PARTITION No. (for ex. sdc and not sdc1!)

good luck!

I did zoom very small identity photo from the trail way reductions card from my grand grand ma (Urgrossmutter / arrière grand-mère) to paper full size and have so a real portrait from her in real good quality.

But, no driver in Linux only a terribly complicate installation's procedure.

As in Windows you have nothing to install: Windows recognize itself the printer and you have nothing to do, I MUST have windows and dual boot because of that printer!

I have a 1 TB hard disk. Windows did accept to liberate the half of the disk but not the rest because of not movable files...

And I have no Windows installation's software and not know any more what kind of Windows installations software are possible on a disk having yet Windows.

All that because the absence of interest for and in the Linux world.

The best would be to use the Windows drivers from the standard windows installation (I did install myself nothing more: the HP color laser 150a (has also a name as Corean printer) is standard at Windows and automatic recognized.

Is that possible?

I didn't try with some smartphone as I don´t use that at al all (I have a 20 years old phone from my daughter as she was as child! She is now 35 !).

But perhaps would Andbox also offer possibilitiers?

I did use now the refracta tools in Star Linux alias Crowz Linux (see separate thread) and did have success snapshoting + reinstalling with refracta installer but ...

... it is an EXTREMST quenching tool compared with the extrem friendly tool from Calamares initially included in Crowz!

AFTER it did install the packages, also at the end of it's job, he breaks the installation because it gives a lot of choices I am not willing concerning encryption and rights of the user.

I did add directly the new installation in grub.cfg (as 40_custom does usually) with 4 lines only. And the installation did start of course with the precedent user and user's root password (as, it is naturally so, as refractasnapshot did copy all including the right of the user and it's password!) but that breaking is not evident.

The refracta installer has a too complex end structure compared with calamares!

I did try diffferent times to upgrade to Daedalus (as upgrading to actual Chimarea seems always end successless now) also without success ...

... excepted yesterday evening :-) ! I also have now a Crowz update as Refracta snapshot ISO (with the very confortable Calamares installer in it as well as, now, Refracta snapshot-base and Refracta installer-base, JWM with menu and XFCE4-appfinder with item in the JWM system.jwmrc, Gnome browser Web (alias epiphany-browser) als well as Luakit (*1, mousepad (insteed of geany), abiword, gnumeric, mgp, gparted, mtpaint, mhwaveedit. All the stuff makes an ISO with a bit less than 1100 MB. It occupes 3,4 GB installed in a 9,77 GB ext4 partition and seems to work well (I will see that in the praxis in the next days!) and to continue to be able to be actualized.

Until now, the Calamares installer did continue to work.

The ISO also directly starts as Refracta snapshot
(edit no. 1 230703 23:00 : No, after control it is not true. the long list from first apt auto-remove after the last upgrade did probably remove the comfortable Calamares installer - Sorry, you must use the terribly quenching refracta installer!)

This makes the stuff actualizable but starting (like a Puppy Linux) fully out the RAM if you have enough RAM (I have 8 GB). After shutdown no trace of the session excepted that, what you did record or save yourself on you HD or USB stick (you can agree for tonnes of cookies without to angry!)...

I will of course add more stuff for me (to read Chinese without to know it using xsane/tesseract-ocr/gimagereader, marble-qt, merkaartor, SWI prolog, aeskulap, anbox, wine, aqemu/kvm, etc., as I already have in my Chimerea version of Crowz).

I did begin to answer myself my questions;

In gnuinos as installed by me, a., b. and c. are absolutely no problem!

A note: some message concerning chrome did appear in the fresh konqueror. Why?

To answer d., e. and f., I did look in synaptic (I never install with synaptic, always with apt (or if required by the system apt-get). But the search is more easy, I admit it) for some

And it was a perfect system for the future. But it did never come in Linux! Ok, the answer would be «do it yourself, Microsoft did offer to the Linux world the kit for that about twenty years ago!». That is right as far, you develop, you are a developer and you like to develop! I don't do that. But million of Linux developers develop PARALLEL the same thing, nothing new, for the one Suse, the second Slackware since both exist (it's a very long time: they the oldest yet present distributions, the other for Debian, it's Ubuntu and Devuan, Arch, indendants en masse like the poor little SliTaz (but about complete and independant although not compatible with GNU grub2...) until linuxfromscratch and derivate. 100 time the same although essentiel other stuffs did never come!)

Hi

I thank aitor very much for following help to install with the old classic debootstrap installations mode:

aitor wrote:
oui wrote:

daedalus i386 : is a good working debootstrap available. can it be started for the live iso to install at a destination on the hard disk (as not all PC's have all enough usb stick places)? If I assume the iso is at /dev/sdb1 and the place is a directory at /mnt/sda6/newGNUinOS/ , what is to do to build the binaries collection, and what is to do to activate it when finish on an empty USB (the place is free now!) stick bzw. build an operable ISO file to make with dd the same result?

Assuming I have understood your question, you're asking about how to install gnuinos from the live iso in a similar way than when you debootstrap the system:

https://gist.github.com/varqox/42e213b6 … filesystem  (***)

If so, below instructions (not tested) might help you.

To start with, download the iso image and create the following two folders at your home directory:

$ mkdir isoimage sqfs

As root, mount the iso image in the earlier one (extracting the iso file is that straightforward and, more often than not, you don't need any additional software):

# mount -o loop gnuinos-5.0.0-daedalus_preview-2023.06.21-xfce_i686.iso isoimage/

Now uncompress the squashfs filesystem to the latter folder:

# mount -t squashfs -o loop isoimage/live/filesystem.squashfs sqfs

At this point you can follow one by one the steps detailed in the above howto (***), but replacing the paragraph "Install base system" which consists in debootstrapping the system via debootstrap --arch amd64 stable /mnt https://deb.debian.org/debian with the command below:

# rsync -v -rlt -a sqfs/ /dev/PARTITION

This command would copy the whole lot to a separate folder in your /dev/PARTITION.

Bear in mind that you need to unmount the squashfs filesystem afterwards:

# umount sqfs/

Good luck!

As the message is difficult to find at the end of an already long thread where I did find it, I port it here from that about empty thread, where I will speak about my installation.

This evening, I am happy: the installation is about finish and correspond to my wishes.

But I did not use debootstrap this time because I really need fast my new (refurbished) PC, a DELL Xt3 with i7 4 core 8 GB 1 TB with windows 10 on sda1, 2 and 3 (keeping the half of the HD although self also empty because of "not movable stuff in the 3 or one of the 3 windows partitions and I don't know how to solve that problem in Windows 10: it is an extreme long time, that I did use the last time windows! About 20 y.! I remember it was necessary to defrag also reorg the partitions, but I did not find the probably existent way in windows 10...). I have actually no time to spend for those details as the logical partition sda4 is free for about 1/2 TB memory space, and I have no time to really test the debootstrap way (I will do it later: my purpose is to build with the Refracta tools an ISO like Puppy linux iso's).

QUESTION 1: how to shrink the 3 Windows partitions more?

Today I also did use the offered installer from the recent gnuinos for AMD64.

It seems to work very fast (not as the common old Debian installer)! I am very happy!

After first login, I did apt update and search for browsers as I absolutely not like Firefox (in my eyes, it search to force the same MONOPOLISH position as Microsoft in the past and did eliminate all other Linux browsers... The browser terror pure in Linux itself, or more: Microsoft did never enter in Linux with it's browsers... Firefox is at all places: Windows, Mac, Linux, Android! You can not avoid it and protect you against it!).

I did find alice, and did install it. It is installed but don't react at all.

Hm, what can I do to avoid that ugly Firefox (or Iceweasel, it is the same...)?

Konqueror!

Seems to work pretty as the legendary Konqueror! Bravo.

I did apt purge iceweasel.

Trying to refer to mousepad (I am often using), I did discover that the authors of gnuinos also did not stay loyal to the real xfce4 definition. no mousepad but the ugly geany (why ugly? because it don't likes to open an separate windows for each job! I don't like that. It is a typical «Puppy linux tool»: as Puppy linux did born, real linuxers did use very great editor going as far as artificial intelligence (integrated in expert systems like swi-prolog). and EACH good linux desktop offers a good own editor, KDE, Gnome, and XFCE4 itself. Why change it? Hm. Xfce4 also? Yes but it can be tricky to solve properly with it the spell checking. And spell checking is important for me: I did never learn English and I am French. A lot of words are the same ... excepted the spelling (not only  "daedalus"!). Gedit connect immediately with hunspell... So I prefer for this reason gedit.

Hm so began I to change the choice of applications.

I prefer nemo against thunar. I is about the same but nemo can more. And, using Konqueror, it is so or so luxe: Konqueror itself is a very good file manager! So I did erase thunar after installing nemo.

Since this time, apt auto-remove will erase a part of the xfce4. What an intolerance! Linux becomes really more terrible concerning tolerance as Microsoft!   I will preserve those files, there are:

libdbusmenu-gtk3-4
libgtop-2.0-11
libgtop2-common
libkeybinder-3.0-0
libxfce4ui-utils
xfce4-appfinder
xfce4-panel
xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin

but I don't know how to do that as such operation is not frequent!

QUESTION 2: how to do that (protect above files using apt or apt-get)?

View on my actual installation:

sudo apt install alice refractainstaller-base refractainstaller-gui refractasnapshot-base refractasnapshot-gui mgp abiword gedit gnumeric gv xsane tesseract-ocr gimagereader mtpaint mhwaveedit cups marble-qt nted rosegarden gforth gprolog jwm deborphan nemo konqueror pageedit

The correspondent snapshot has the size 1,3 GB.

I will add some application(s) to extract parts of videos for my sport videos: only small parts of videos are interesting to revisit again.

QUESTION 3: What is the smallest and easiest application to crop videos MP4.

QUESTION 4: idem for sound files MP3?

And, last question:

QUESTION 5: how to add i386 compatibility in gnuinos?
