Is this a sources.list issue?
I have REM'd out the line pointing to the CD as I have done with previous installs for Devuan 3.0 and 3.1.1
I installed choosing English Language, English UK and English-GB keyboard layout.
However, as # is part of my password I need to press shift and 3 to get the hash key instead of the hash key!
Any way to resolve this? Thanks.
After attemtping various solutions to no avail, my only option forward was to use FerenOS to access my /home folder and save to newly purchased WD Elements 4 Tb hard drive. I have wiped the drive and installed Devuan 4 - the only glitch with the install is that whilst I had chosen UK and British English inputs, on first logon I had to use US layout for one of the symbols in the password! This has now resolved itself so will mark as "Solved" but it wasn't really.
Update 13.12.2021: the glibc error message in full when attempting to run 'startx' after a timeshift --restore (also /var/cache/apt/archives full even after deleting from other OS):
/usr/lib/xorg: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: verssion 'GLIBC_2.30' not found (required by /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libsystemd.so.0)
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: connection refused
xinit: server error
Update 13.12.2021: OK the full error message is a knonw KDE error/bug in other OS's:
Message was "all shell packages missing.Contact your distribution".
I used Alt+ F2 to launch Konsole and was able to get firefox up and running and my /home folder still intact which is the main thing. When I tried to launch
startx
from the terminal it launched LXQt and asked which manager I wanted to use. I selected kwin but still black desktop.
I followed the commands as laid out on the main page of Devuan. The only messages I could see were medium security warnings and the principle one I amended as advised by the warning was the command
chkboot -u
after
apt-get update
After some more whirring in the terminal I got the error message
Not enough space in /var/cache/apt/archive
I did some searching and applied the command
apt-get autoclean
I then followed the instruction from the Devuan upgrade guide:
apt-get dist-upgrade
I also ran the commands from the guide:
apt-get autoremove --purge
then once more
apt-get autoclean
Everything appeared fine until I rebooted. It was clearly indicated that I was using version 4 of Devuan at tty in terminal. KDE was nowhere to be found in the DE options, only MATE and LXQt and Devuan default (LXQt).
I attempted:
sudo apt-get install kde-full
This pulled all KDE packages into the system.
I still only got the tty at login and after I logged in at the terrminal I attempted 'startx' but no response.
I then remembered I had timeshift and chose advanced recovery mode for 4.19 kernel at boot time.
I restored the image taken at 12.02 yesterday.
Upon reboot still tty login. On attempting to run
startx
I get the error message that glibc 2.6 is not present needed to run startx - message not complete but on searching glibc is critical in running everything and can be a major issue following an upgrade (other OS's).
What to do now?
[This post posted from FerenOS drive, accessing Devuan /home folder]
Followed the guide on upgrade and when logging in to KDE blank screen with error message, no shell present. I can run Alt+ F2 to run Konsole and launch applications but shell is missing so no desktop. Help!
I am curious about upgrading from 3.1 to 4. Will the OS update interfere with installed proprietary applications? (SoftMaker Office 2021, pdf Stuio Pro 2021).
Is there an instruction note on the main Devuan page on how to update?
I did install 4 on an old drive as wanted to see how the accessible speech install worked - outstanding!
With the advent of Devuan 4 "chimaera", puts most of the other GNU/Linux OS's out there to shame, not least with its accessibility installer included.
There is absolutely no reason in my opinion to leave Devuan at all - it keeps on getting better with every release! As someone who has worked in a service area supporting students with little of no vision (I retired end of August this year), I can now start arguing for Devuan on other mailing lists. Compare privacy intruding Windows (most versions) plus the additional cost of an overpriced screenreader (ok there is NVAccess granted) but Orca wins hands down!
Firstly wanted to congratulate the accessibility team who created the possibility of installing for a user with little or no vision. Great job!
LXF has let Devuan down - tried to install off their cover DVD and kept stating invalid media when searching for the DVD installation media.
So I downloaded the iso and it installed great. Greatly impressed with the more human sounding voices now available in Orca (screenreader) and my favourite is Hugo. I used to work in a service that provided modified texts in Braille and Large Print and I have always tried to provide good examples of Free Software being better than other Operating Systems. Devuan 4 clearly offers the best. The only teething issues I have had is that I made the admin password the same as my user and when trying to launch synaptic have had issues saying that it was incorrect (authorisation failure). KDE (Plasma) had to have its menu switched to Application Launcher and I appreciate that you don't set the default menu in KDE but once set to Application launcher, the cursor keys announced the menu entries correctly - the mouse after a couple of attempts, but a user with no vision is reliant on keyboard and has little use for a mouse unless modifier keys allocated to buttons on the mouse. I chose Devuan default DE (=LXQt?), xfce, KDE (Plasma) and Gome flashback. All work great with the screenreader.
I installed it with accessibility options so as to prevent pulse audio being installed as I read in LXF magazine that Pulse Audio interferes with synthesised speech.
I would now like to turn off the Accessibility option completely but not at expense of Pulse rearing its butt ugly head again. On another OS I have been playing with I found an interesting 'solution' to prevent pulse from launching by creating a 'pulse off' folder in /etc and then cuttig and pasting the pulse folder into the 'pulse off' folder. Works for me - just need to remember to block future updates to pulse.
Way to go Devuan team!
Out of curiosity, I used my password for Virtual Machine Manager (KVM/Qemu) and it launched! Must be pkexec that I was not aware of! LOL!
Thanks Head_on_a_Stick,
I normally run Synaptic via the menu (KDE Tiled Menu search bar) then the password box pops up. I also have Virtual Machine Manager run at boot time and that normally asks for root password. When I installed Devuan 3.1.1. 'beowulf' on the new Hard Drive I opted for separate Root password - I don't have myself as a 'sudoer'.
Here is the output of 'apt policy'

Thanks for your time.
Yes I've searched the su passwd solution and reset the same passwd and rebooted. Not an issue in Konsole but if I want to run Synaptic to check apps or run Apper to update the system, the graphical password box reports back incorrect password - even though it works when su in terminal (konsole) on KDE desktop.
Could it be an X.authority issue? Or does Devuan not use that?
Thanks.
(Only just started this issue today).
Just thought I would share with you that I solved this by finding the 'add hardware' section in 'Details'!
Hi,
I am running KDE on this installation and in my previous install I was able to right-click a downloaded folder from Office365 as a .zip file, right-click the .zip file and select 'Extract here'. I know about using Ark which is what i always used to do and when 'Extract here' became available things moved more quickly. Strangely about a week ago it appeared to be working again but not anymore. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks for reading.
Hi Altoid,
I think because I was in a rush working from home I had not spotted that element on the site. Many thanks. On earlier iterations on a different OS before I moved to Devuan I had to splatter the desktop with all the gubbins, remove Java 11 and install Java 8. The fact they now have it properly packaged I was hoping it would have worked - hey ho, no matter. I retire at end of August so no sweat but much appreciated that you took all that trouble to attempt to resolve the issue.
Warm regards,
swarf'
Hi, I am trying to install the latest version of Bralleblaster stable. This now comes as a .deb package but when running gdebi it comes back with a dependency error. It needs
libgcc-s1
This is not in the repos and only available using Debian Sid repo - would I break my system if I added that repository?
Currently running Devuan 3.1.1
KDE Plasma: 5.14.5
KDE Frameworks: 5,54.0
Qt Version: 5.11.3
Kernel Version: 4.19.0-17-amd4
Thanks in advance!
I have to download jobs from SharePoint which get downloaded as Zip archives. When I had my earlier iteration on the drive that failed, I had no issues of going to the download location, right-clicking and selecting 'Extract Here' from the context menu. I can no longer do this with the most recent release of Devuan 3. I have to double-click the .zip archive to view contents and then select the object to be extracted. Is this due to new security measures? I can see why that should be just wondered.

Hi,
In this instance I am referring to an Application I purchased this year. pdf Studio Pro 2020 by Qoppa, one of the few pdf editor software that still supports GNU/Linux (the other is Master pdf editor). I went for the Qoppa one based on high scoring reviews on 'alternative to' website. My corrupt file occurred because I had a failing hard drive which I was not aware of at the time. The application uses java and during failing hard drive phase I could not render the partially altered pdf (an Exam paper for a student with low vision). I did some searching and found this useful command line tool,
pdftk
To fix a corrupt file:
pdftk <name of file> output fixed.pdf
i used 'fixed.pdf' as an example as it makes it easier to find.
Next I opened up the fixed.pdf in LibreOffice Draw and exported as fixedA.pdf on which I then open in Okular.
From here I could use the selection tool in Okular for highlighting text to copy to clipboard then drop into place in pdf Studio Pro 2020.
Now as for images I had enhanced using GIMP to delete labels, then enhance in Inkscape, because I now have the fixed.pdf open in LibreOffice draw I can select the modified images only without the labels to copy and paste into pdf Studio Pro 2020 - saved a lot of time of not having to start from scratch!
pdftk is available via Synaptic Package Manager.
Hi everyone,
Had to replace a failing hard drive this week and decided to download the latest version, 3.1.1 DVD iso. Installed the same way as previously, choosing separate /var and /home. Printer picked up correctly as Canon TS8000 series (TS8151). Haven't installed the PPD from Canon. If I unlock the printer, the number of copies is set as 1 which is what I would want as default but if I need to make more than one copy, even choosing from the Application being used to print from it does not change - any ideas?
Thanks for reading.
When I upgraded this rig, by that I mean the CoolerMaster Case i've had since about 2006, I bought an Asus X-470 Pro Motheboard, and what I though was going to be a an AMD Ryzen processor with cooling fan. The processor arrived and all the other bits but the processor box on one side said "With fan" and on the other side "no fan is in this box"! All i got from the supplier was a £5 refund! So i have foolishly been using the old motherboard's CPU Cooler, an Asus Red Lion Square cooler but recently had a lot of re-starts and warning on CPU error on reboot. So I thought it was time to get something decent. I did not want to risk liquid cooling as have heard quite a few horror stories about leaks. So in the end I purchased a Noctua AH-15 with two 140 mm fans - but sadly could only use the one as the RAM modules are that little bit too high. That aside I was really impressed with the Cooler and the AMD kit which thanks to Boris's Botched Brexit plan took 2 months to arrive from Austria in stead of a week or two so Saturday just gone was spent installing the wondrous beast. Can highly recommend this piece of kit as it is a welcome relief from having to use that annoying, 'spring clip' that has to get 'forcefully' hooked on to the notched retainers attached to the Motherboard.
My gallery of the recent install can be found here:
Hi Head_on_a_Stick,
Thanks for the quick response. I booted into the predecessor to Devuan which I have as a spare goto for Work, FerenOS - ironically that picked up the second graphics without any issues. Then I thought, oh, if I install Arandr (Gtk front end to xrandr) I could save the script from FerenOS and use that. I think I need to be doing somethings in root. Anyway no rush, there's an online LUG meeting coming up in my region so will ask for some steps there what to do on the command line - most guides quote HDMI but i want both on VGA. Just using the original card for dual monitor setup at present - one monitor connected with HDMI, the other VGA (Primary).
Thanks again for your response. Much appreciated.
