Yes agreed the universal aspect of text makes them ideal for information storage and retrieval. I have an old Compaq Pentium III laptop running Devuan minimal, really a prof of concept on how Devuan can be used to recycle old technology, but If I had to I can read all my text files on that machine.
Hi all, just wondering what does the community do to create, sort and store their notes?
I have used various note taking applications in the past but have always returned to text files in folder.
Speaking of applications I do like Zimwiki and used it for quite a while and still have it installed.
My basic structure for note taking is Mousepad as my editor, though any text editor will do, a folder called Notes and the naming convention is ‘date-description’.
I save everything as markdown though, I have been saving in gemtext too.
I like text it’s very zen and I find Mousepad and a Notes folder is all I really need.
Hi alsen Ive used GPT4ALL on Devuan using a flatpak. It worked okay though it does require good amount of ram at least 16gb.
I see it has Deepseek added now too.
I haven't tried to install it any other way apart from the flatpak.

Yes congratulations Devuan and thank you to all that put in hard work to create such an amazing distribution. ![]()
HI all just thought I would try PayPal donation link again unfortunately it is still resulting in the same message "Donations to this recipient aren't supported in this country"
Hello, just returning to this, apologies it has been a while. I noticed that I still, get the 'Donations to this recipient aren't supported in this country' message when trying to donate to Devuan.
My thoughts: I can donate to Dyne.org as there are a few options. This will go towards Dyne projects and Devuan.
I use other Dyne software so I think it is a better option for me.
Wondering is a better idea to redirect the Devuan donation requests to Dyne with a message like 'Supporting The Dyne.org Foundation you support Devuan ' or something allot those lines.
I agree, there is not need for apologies I found it quite an interesting discussion and Dowse was mentioned. Any discussion where Dowse is mentioned will always be a good discussion! ![]()

Excellent! thanks golinux.
Just an update, PayPal customer service actually rang me, I couldn't believe it!
They said that nothing on their end is blocking the transaction, and it could be an issue with the client.
I'm wondering if this is something to do with the button code on the donation page ?
Hopefully someone in the Devuan team can look into this.
Thanks
Rue.
Hi all, I just went to renew my donation through PayPal, I gad to deactivate it for a a few months unfortunately.
When I click the link from the Devuan donation page to PayPal and setup the donation I get presented with this message
'Donations to this recipient aren't supported in this country'
Apparently this is happening to various people all over the place, not just 'Stichting Dyne.org'. Some a re saying on the PayPal community help its to do with the button code.
Using the recipient's email address is apparently a workaround for this issue but I can't be sure of that.
i would like to renew my donation but at the moment the PayPal issues is preventing it
Is this something that Dyne.org needs to look into maybe has PayPal changed something recently that has caused this ?
Anyway keep up the great work and thanks in advance for your help.
Rue.
This is excellent news! Thank you.
Perfect! Thanks.
Interesting, I had a misbehaving browser today actually, Firefox + Youtube stream = misbehaving browser.
I never thought of adding xkill to the panel, that's a good Idea. Certainly faster than trying to open a terminal while Firefox slowly melts my laptop into the Earths core. I'm going to try this out right now.
Thanks! ![]()
Hi tempvan1,
I think you need to use the whole path
/usr/sbin/service --status-all
Thanks

Yes I saw this too,
I see Hex DSL has modified his site too, he also has some interesting scripts to do with Gemini too. Just haven't had time to look at them yet.
I love it!
I use Lagrange through Flatpak!
Yes I was using the Lagrange Flatpak too.
I'm trying out Amfora at the moment
I've just been listening to a podcast about NFT (non-fungible token trying to get my head around it and understand how it works.
Something that worries me is the concept of perpetuity royalty, that you get with NFT. Now it is not that the creator is getting paid for what the created, that's great. It's the worry that this also means perpetuity copyright. Now I don't understand NFT that well but am I right here? Or if it hasn't been thought up yet, can it happen with NFT? Because if is or it can be, this is a big problem for future works entering the public domain.
For along time now we have seen big media companies manipulating and lobbying for extended copyright, we just need to look at Disney for proof of that.
If Disney some how created NFT around Mickey Mouse would they have perpetual copyright, so Mickey Mouse would never enter the public domain.
Mickey Mouse is just an example or course, the way Disney Corp have tangled Mickey Mouse up in a billion trademarks, it will never enter the public domain.
But what about other creative works, are they in danger of perpetual copyright?
Here's the podcast link if anyone is interested. https://www.badvoltage.org/2021/03/19/3x25/
Looking forward to your thoughts on this.

Absolutely beautiful! The colours of the ocean are always close to my heart. as the ocean is too.
There is allot of research on colours and chemical changes in the brain. We naturally gravitate to natural tones of nature, Earth, Sky, Oceans.
it's calming and generally pleasing to use. You see this in product manufacturing all the time.
Again beautiful theme, can't wait t use it.

Debians decision to use systemd split the Linux community - I don't think the split can be repaired - I, personally, keep an eye on BSD, because I don't like the way Systemd works by amalgamating everything together like Windows Registry - one of the reasons I quit using Windows as soon as I could learn to use unix like O/Ses.
I understand where you are coming from but I am optimistic, and I like to think that communities will come together for common good and put differences aside. It's in my nature i guess.
presently have standard 'live' Devuan installed on most of my computers, but it is somewhat 'heavy' in programs, not my personal choices, so not sure if I will continue to use it, but I know that I, personally, won't be going back to Debian.
I guess if it is too heavy with unwanted applications you could go with the net install or advanced and choose what applications you want during install.
If you are looking for a minimal system you could try Devuan Minimal-Live, be warned through, it is what it says, Minimal, no xorg or desktop. I have it installed on my old Pentium III laptop it runs like a charm ![]()
Systemd is here to stay I think we all understand this.
For me the bigger and more tragic outcome of the Systemd controversy was the split in the communities and the rift of miss trust that grew. I’ve wondered how easy will it be to mend.
I would like to see it mend, I am a huge advocate of working together to improve and move forward for a better future in everything.
I’m not a developer so I don’t begin to understand the resource intensiveness of maintaining multiple init systems and adding to that it seems that certain groups seem to be going out of there way to develop their software to not work with anything else other than Systemd which is unfortunate.
My hope was to see Debian and Devuan work closer together sharing resources building upon each others strengths and becoming, I guess you could say the beacons of the free and open software philosophy. Where one may be Systemd focused and the other alternate init systems.
Any minimalism in my approach is just because of what I need or want to do. Aesthetically, I don't like clutter.
Agreed, for me the idea of digital minimalism is not becoming a digital monk and living in a cave as such, though with the madness in the world, sometimes that does sound appealing. I think it is about less clutter and minimising the bloat, using the tools you need but not going with out, I think we all know how easy it is to bloat our computers, and of course some OS's conveniently do it for you ![]()
It's funny as I'm writing this, looking at my Kubuntu desktop I have three different browsers open, SeaMonkey for this, Chrome for work "because I have to use it"
and Firefox for services I am logged into Youtube, Email etc. I'm not doing very well as a digital minimalist at the moment ![]()
moc for music
Ah moc. I love moc, I use it on my Devuan minimal install.
Excellent!
OK, but it is fun too
I find very convenient to have own server, it is much natural for web development.
Yes indeed Servers are fun, I run one or two myself, I guess I was thinking. Servers are sort of a specialist area where as Desktop is more widely general use.
I guess you could say a server is more lean by design maybe? Depending on what the server is used for of course.

pandoc: office ( I dont really use this that often but when i need to send a properly formatted letter i use markdown and convert it to pdf with pandoc)
