If you like to try other operating systems, give this one a go, I've got it running on one of my desktop thin clients, & it looks like it is almost ready as a release candidate, but be warned, it is quite a different O/S.

https://www.haiku-os.org/

Runs 'live' if you want, just copy to a pendrive, else install to bare metal.

Check F6 in alsamixer, it may be trying to use the wrong output....

Also, if using pulseaudio, again, check that it is using the right output....

(Default output is HDMI if I remember.)

#278 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] DEVELOPERS: don't hardcode GPT on installation » 2023-01-07 09:59:25

GPT is easy enough, but getting familiar with EFI took a bit of time, for me, but most of my hardware is MBR, & Devuan Live/XFCE (& NetBSD) work/install on them fine - Devuan also installs to EFI without any problems on my 'newer' machines. smile

#279 Re: Devuan » Brave New Trusted Boot World » 2022-12-15 17:59:03

I'd like to see/have a live/installable WM based Devuan - call it Light/Basic/or whatever, just needs a WM, terminal, file browser, web browser to start with, allowing most things to be done that a basic O/S needs - all other software can/could easily be added by the user, as & when needed - with the possibility of persistence, (that would be a big bonus) - but I know we only have a small team who could/can make these things happen, so not expecting it anytime soon...... big_smile

#280 Re: Off-topic » Revival of the Linux Framebuffer & DirectFB » 2022-12-13 17:49:17

Yes, if I remember right, you could play video with the likes of mplayer, & maybe have graphics in a text type web browser in a command line installation - it's been a long time since, but I'm pretty sure I used to watch videos.

#281 Re: Off-topic » Revival of the Linux Framebuffer & DirectFB » 2022-12-13 15:02:52

I think frame buffers allow graphics in the (virtual) terminals, don't they(?).

By the way, do you guys find these fanless machines o.k.? For example something like this?:

That is pretty much what my HP T520 thin clients are, they take an M2 SSD, are silent, & fan free too.

I have been using fan less computers for quite some time now, can't remember when I got my first one, but must be about 5 years ago, maybe more, it's a MSI, about 4" square & 2" high - my most used computer.

#283 Re: Off-topic » [SOLVED] I don't know about hardware but need a PC » 2022-12-05 14:37:22

Lots of older computers available online pre used, that's where I get all of mine these days. big_smile

Towers go quite cheaply, as everyone seem to want small quiet computers these days, (me included). wink

Take a look at the resellers of company pre used computers on Ebay. smile

#284 Re: Off-topic » [SOLVED] I don't know about hardware but need a PC » 2022-12-05 09:57:14

Personally, I don't need anything modern; I can do what you want on an old thin client, so basically, it's just up to you how much you want to spend. wink

Extra storage can always come in external USB drives - what other expansion were you thinking about(?).

#285 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » No wifi when moving to the latest Refracta. » 2022-11-26 18:01:52

Most distros will load necessary drivers when booting up a computer, as long as the needed drivers can be found on the system.

On Devuan, they are kept in the /Firmware directory, & get loaded by the boot process, I think it is the initrd.img that searches for them & actually loads them into kernel space, ready for using.

#286 Re: Installation » Devuan: Existential issues. » 2022-11-20 09:51:10

Throwing a tantrum over such trivial matters as covered in this thread is entirely on you. If you're going to behave that way, then I expect this community is better of without you anyway.

We certainly will be......

.... the entitlement of some people. All over an "alarming" lack of gnome-user-manager preinstalled

.....& hasn't the common sense to install it for themself....

I wonder how the poster will fair on the Slackware forums...... wink

#287 Re: Off-topic » What are you reading/want to read ? » 2022-11-19 10:15:30

What am I about to read?

All the documentation on the BSDs, again, as I have just acquired a lot of thin clients which need an O/S.... big_smile

(It's been a while since even using OpenBSD as my desktop, never really got on with FreeBSD, but I shall be giving it another tryout, as will NetBSD be getting a further spell on one of them; & NomadBSD too.) smile

Well, I reckon that will keep me occupied this Winter...... wink

#288 Re: Installation » Devuan: Existential issues. » 2022-11-19 09:56:11

devuan_chimaera_4.0.0_amd64_desktop.iso

This .iso is for installing desktop systems, you get a selection of WMs & DEs; which you choose is up to you; & your 'needed' program is down to the DE you choose.

Most people just use the command line to add & remove users, it's been done that way since before GUIs, even I, as just a desktop user, use the command line tools when needed.

If you need a server distro then use one, & add a DE to it, it's that simple.

Devuan is just Debian without systemd & it takes a lot of work to remove it - we appreciate the teams efforts.

#291 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] Chimaera: "apt purge slim" will remove "task-xfce-desktop*" +much more » 2022-11-10 17:47:36

Looks like it's a meta package that has slim as a dependancy - I'd try installing lightdm first, then see if it still wants to remove xfce.

#292 Re: Other Issues » Recovery after a badly failed update » 2022-11-07 09:15:56

If your SSD is on a separate mount point to that which the installer uses, it won't be touched.
(You just have to create the mount point again.)

(It is always best to have a separate backup anyway, in case of corruption, whatever O/S you use).

#293 Re: Other Issues » Refracta-snapshot no medium containing live file system » 2022-11-07 09:10:09

Snapshot works well on a regular system, but I noticed this -

I also enabled the option to save a copy of the file system.

& wondered if that overrode making a 'live' - I suggest to try just making a 'live' system.

(I've changed the working directory before, & that works, but I haven't tried writing it to a different disk/partition.)

#294 Re: Off-topic » We all aware the interweb is problematic, deranged, imbalanced. » 2022-11-03 11:58:01

Secure your computer, by not going online, it's that simple - pull the plug!

#295 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Slim not showing on my main screen, laptop's own screen is broken » 2022-10-30 09:42:26

There are keys at the top of your laptop keyboard which set which monitor is used.

Options are usually internal (laptop), external, or both.

Edit: You could also remove the laptop screen completely if it's broken, I did this on one of mine.

#296 Re: Off-topic » Google in trouble again » 2022-10-30 09:36:02

All the 'Free' search engines are funded by companies promoting their products, it's a kind of advertising, we all know that, but it can be annoying when you are looking for 'genuine' information; but what's the alternative? I'll use different search engines if I'm looking for something really specific, & I'll always get different results - you pays yer money for what you get..... smile

#297 Re: Devuan » Brave New Trusted Boot World » 2022-10-27 17:29:32

Ha, ha, I don't watch Netflix - my computer is for the internet, forums, playing music, etc. wink

#298 Re: Devuan » Brave New Trusted Boot World » 2022-10-27 14:28:13

Got no problem with captchas, as long as they work properly, some don't, or are somewhat iffy, but if it helps reduce spam, or something like that, I can see the point, but for my own interests, it will just be a pain in the ar*e, I think.

Anyway, I've got a 'stock' of old machines, so as long as Linux in general doesn't demand it, I'll be fine. smile

#299 Re: Devuan » Brave New Trusted Boot World » 2022-10-26 09:44:22

This document will assume that the reader has comprehensive familiarity with TPM 2.0 security chips and their capabilities (e.g., PCRs, measurements, SRK), boot loaders, the shim binary, Linux, initrds, UEFI Firmware, PE binaries, and SecureBoot.

Ye gods, what about us poor old folks who just like to use their (ancient) computers without fuss....... big_smile

#300 Re: Devuan Derivatives » Install Exe GNU/Linux. » 2022-10-26 09:39:54

But, Debian now include all the drivers necessary, at long last...but I'll still stay with Devuan, The 'True' Debian. wink
