ceres with MATE here, no such problem.. where do you see these errors? which log? maybe there's something else there too?
dbus 1.12.16-2+devuan1 came in ceres on 6/5/2020, so if it was dbus problem it would appear earlier.. could be something else triggering this error.
no need for sury or 3rd party repo, even for php-fpm.. beowulf has php7.3 that works just fine and is supported for a long time.
lamp stack (no metapackage), works fine there.
apart from above packages, if you're installing some CMS you'll probably need more php modules like php-intl, php-xml, php-json, php-mbstring, etc...
just check logs if you get errors, and act accordingly..
... and /etc/fstab:
## root on HDD /dev/sda2 UUID=589c7999-62be-47ac-8847-32b62fd9fdc9 / ext4 defaults, noatime 0 1
this is line 9, you have a space after 'defaults', should be "defaults, noatime"
automounting android/lineageos works nicely here with MATE DE after enabling mtp on android. no clue about other DEs, some might be missing packages used for that.
after modifying disk with gparted to prepare 2nd install, the disk uuid probably got modified. check from working system here : /dev/disk/by-uuid,
if it's not the same, chroot to troubling installation, modify grub and run update-grub.. then try booting again.
note, i dont use UEFI. and grub loads luks partition from eg. 'root=/dev/mapper/system--vg-root'
your post is full of assumptions. just imagine this and that.. lots of fantasies to keep you occupied with systemd all/every day. tbh, i can't read another systemd related post anymore. it's not laissez-faire, it's just that people are obsessed with this crap (good or bad) for far too many years already, and can't move forward, or really discuss other inits (runit, s6, openrc, others) and init freedom in general. how are you keeping other options alive, when you only talk about systemd?
search the word "systemd" and the word "runit" in this forum. tell me how many posts you find mentioning each. that should be fun
and oh well, there are other more important things in real life (like surviving...). what am i going to do with Devuan if i can't have food to eat?
and since you ask, concerning my poor ignorant me..., if i still have to work on linux when there's only systemd around, well i could do that for a salary, but then i probably wouldn't like my job for too long, and eventually quit it.
tbh, i've been thinking of gardening/farming as an alternative. it's very tempting already..
FYI, there's tens of nosystemd distros apart from devuan, lots of bsds, and hurd that could use some love too.
there is no 'geoloc' for deb.devuan.org. just use a mirror that suits your location best.
(had the same question couple of months ago, mirrors@d.o kindly replied)
try installing from a usb2 stick. usb3 is still buggy in linux kernel.
sorry, it's :
# dpkg-reconfigure tzdata
what devuan version?
try changing timezone from terminal as root and see if that helps :
# dpkg --reconfigure tzdata
there are a few other reasons this can occur, hwclock , mate-settings/dbus issue ( .xsession-errors ? ) others..
this is a nice link : https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/System_time
should, yes. in general, i try not to be a hater, but an init freedom lover ;-)
i don't mind people using systemd really... it's foss so i guess it's ok. at least rpi folks realise the "full-fat systemd ...ness" ....
there should be more reasons to go systemd-free,... rpi and other arm devices run much faster / less RAM usage, without it.
no problem here with MATE DE. you can also check ~/.xsession-errors file for related messages, and also try to run
$ apulse firefox , to see if that works...
lots of related messages in this forum to look more info : https://dev1galaxy.org/search.php?search_id=392925050
you can find some info here : https://wiki.debian.org/Nginx
i think you should have libpam-elogind installed.. according to release notes :
The default session manager for all desktops is logind (libpam-elogind).
XFCE and Cinnamon will work with either logind or consolekit. The other
desktop environments will only work with logind.
link : https://files.devuan.org/devuan_beowulf … _notes.txt
if that doesn't help, maybe remove consolekit and go with elogind.. `apt install libpolkit-gobject-elogind-1-0`
note: not using XFCE, just a guess here.
you probably need tor browser.
apt install torbrowser-launcher
or download from official website. https://www.torproject.org/download/
tor package is the tor daemon only. it doesn't include torbrowser, nor do you want it to run torbrowser. torbrowser includes its own tor daemon.
i can open http://deb.devuan.org with firefox-esr without errors/certs. only https presents errors which is normal. (maybe a https-anywhere plugin or something else like web cache/other? )
did you try to ping/dig deb.devuan.org from a terminal?
as root : apt update ?
you are probably using it with https://. switch back to http://deb.devuan.org , or use a specific https mirror
using linux libre 5.6 (https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/info … 00014.html), for several hours today, no freezes so far... looks good. didn't read linux kernel official release notes, but probably some "popular" intel issues were patched..
You will want to update synaptic every time you want to browse or install etc. so it can find the newest packages.
just for reference :
"Reload" button in synaptic, does the same thing (`apt update`). so, whenever you open synaptic, it's best to do that first.
synaptic menu also has an option to pick version : mark package, then 'Package' -> 'force version'. (same as `apt install -t release package`)
in my case freeze happened after working already for some hours, while browsing some "news" web with ff & several tabs open.
no issues so far with 5.4 official kernel (devuan/debian sid 5.4.19-1), sticking with that for now.
mate-applet-brisk-menu is in devuan, ascii-backports & beowulf. : https://pkginfo.devuan.org/cgi-bin/d1pk … elease=any
seen it happen a few times with different kernels of the 5.5.x tree (specifically linux-libre & antix). haven't seen it happened with stock kernel yet ( 5.4.19-1).
writing it here, in case someone has some tips..
when this happens laptop is completely frozen, can only hard-reboot it.

came across a bug for non-systemd systems in libvirt-daemon-system version 5.6.0-3 in ceres/sid. : https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … bug=939983
error : Unable to read from '/sys/fs/cgroup/unified/machine/cgroup.controllers'
there seems to be a fix in upstream libvirt >= 5.9.0 (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1760233#c8) , so i tried deb version 6.0.0-1 from debian experimental repo (i know repomixing dangers, but i needed a local libvirt daemon for an urgent test), and that seems to work without issues..
for proper fix we probably have to wait till that version enters sid/ceres repos...
also version in beowulf (5.0.0-4) worked ok, iirc.
using openrc/elogind in ceres.
