Withdraw Admin Rights...

when they hurt the community?

What if admins close topics without there was a dispute? What if admins close topics without any reasons given?

Wouldn't it be reasonable to deprive these admin's rights?

People wonder why suddenly another forum pops up. Accusing the forum creator and the people joining there behaving childishly and treating them like traitors (to the Devuan community). But what if some of the so called gatekeepers of mentioned community actually are the reason for the split of the community?

As an example let's have a look at this thread: https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=8112

Is anyone participating in this forum, this community effort, able to explain the reason for this thread to be closed? Throughout the years I have seen several forum topics ending like this. No dispute, no foul language, no threats are made and – as far as I can see – no forum rule has been violated, but still the topic has been closed by an admin.

Is it possible such a behaviour drives people away? Many of the threads that ended that way were about new ideas, suggestions on how to improve Devuan, the forum or something of Devuan's periphery.

Don't get me wrong, this post is not about being anti certain admins, this post is about pro community. Where ideas are welcome and not shut down for no reason given. As a community, we should be able to criticize the gatekeepers of the platforms we communicate on in case they behave in a way that disrupts new ideas, that disrupts free speech! After all, we do not stand for dictatorship, we stand for init-freedom, software-freedom and ideas that improve our project – I hope for!

In this spirit, maybe it was harsh of me to call for revoking rights, but at least let's have a stern talk to admins that behave that way. Forum admins are there to uphold forums rules and not their personal feelings.

Prost!

Re: Withdraw Admin Rights...

To be fair, sometimes Code of Conduct can be very broad in certain issues. Maybe Dev1galaxy.org's is too?

Re: Withdraw Admin Rights...

I can probably guess why that thread was closed, the mindset behind closing it, etc, but that hardly matters. As you're really just promoting the other site after all. It's all very silly and juvenile, but typical of Linux forums, where there's lots of drama and chat and conflict.

This site was always about one individual imposing their will and ideology on those they regard as inferior and misguided - i.e. the Devuan users / other people in general.

The other site mainly consists of a group of "can do" oriented people who don't seem to have any clear direction. In my view it's a "talking shop" and in particular an echo chamber for one individual (a staff member) who can't tolerate any opinions that don't match their worldview - would be good if they proved me wrong. I suppose we'll find out. But yes, not so different to here really. Most people start these types of sites start with the best of intentions, then the cliques form, etc.

I don't follow the Devuan forums that closely and was under the impression it was populated by (responsible) adults.

Apparently I was wrong roll

Re: Withdraw Admin Rights...

That particular thread had run its course, I think, so no point in keeping it open...

Probably similar reasons for other threads too.

Also, some threads over 6 months old get closed, but these can be referenced if something genuinely new crops up.

Re: Withdraw Admin Rights...

That thread was closed with a clarification of the process and standard(s) to which Devuan releases are themed. It is a thoughtful process . . .  one that serves Devuan not random whims of a creator who might be unaware of that process.

And now this thread will also be closed so this explanation will not get lost in a flurry of useless chatter.  wink
