I started using xchat with jessie now it's hexchat in chimaera. That's the default in Xfce . . . It is text based. No html. The on line version can be found at https://libera.chat/ but then you won't have logs locally. parazyd had to nursemaid me through the setup . . . I am not an irc nerd so can't help beyond that. Looking forward to seeing you there! You can share your humor in the #devuan-offtopic channel! Hehehe . . .

I did a search in the terminal for irc clients. Several of them looked interesting. For now, I've installed Hexchat. I'll revisit others later.

Just use ERC.ERC is an IRC client. It is included in Emacs as of version 22.3
