A warning from the godfather of AI

Hello:

Hot off the press: ‘Godfather of AI’ Geoffrey Hinton quits Google and warns over dangers of misinformation

Josh Taylor @The Guardian wrote:

The neural network pioneer says dangers of chatbots were ‘quite scary’ and warns they could be exploited by ‘bad actors’

Crikey ...
Who would have ever thought of that?  8^°

Read the piece here.

Best,

I think the scary part of all this is what is not being said, which is probably without doubt a much larger picture.

To wit, the fantastic amount of money invested to work on/develop AI at this pace is not to see if they can find a cure for cancer or AIDS.
Those would be a by-product, the fallout so to speak.

The truth is that it is all about more money and more power to those who already hold far too much of that in their hands.

eg:
Huge tech corporations such as Microsoft/IBM/Amazon as well as banks and financial corporations are already laying off workers by the thousands as their back-office jobs are being taken over by software.

Interesting times ...

A.

Re: A warning from the godfather of AI

Followed golinux's thread, this one too.

A month ago a ChatGPT ad/spam showed up in my email and two weeks ago I got a snailmail full-color, oversized postcard. Both described how cool ChatGPT is and how it would enhance my life. Reminded me of 'The Cloud' promotions years ago, and entrusting personal stuff on someone else's hard drive... and paying a monthly fee for the priviledge.

The difficulty in searching ChatGPT was deciding which of the zillions of links to follow. While big tech's already using it and it's widely promoted, the experts are issuing dire warnings?

ChatGPT creator warns of AI dangers

From the article:

Altman told ABC that his company is in “regular contact” with government officials, but did not elaborate on whether these officials played any role in shaping ChatGPT’s political preferences. He told the American network that OpenAI has a team of policymakers who decide “what we think is safe and good” to share with users.

Indeed. It's often time consuming to confirm whether the news we're reading or watching is real. Like the greenscreen and real time video editing already in use, and digital people (eg: Google's AI Robot) the public seems to trust more than real people, AI adds another subtle layer of BS to wade through... assuming we even see it for what it is.

I am convinced that the only way to win is not to play. Thankfully I am old so that may be possible but at some point, being part of the hive will be mandatory. Horrifying!

Re: A warning from the godfather of AI

There was actually a simple thing that could have prevented this.

Don't  create  monsters:

Aka, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, etc...

At this point, these monsters need a huge nerf if not oblivion itself. We don't need monsters similar to them and we don't need insurrectionists or other forms of violent or terroristic extremism either.

@amaro . . . This is news? This has always been the way with humans or chatbots created in the image of their creators. Totally predictable and unsurprising . . .

I find it hard to believe that it took some people till the 2010s to realize Bill Gates ideals were very problematic for people of the world and the planet's limate both as a whole.

To all detractors, yes, get rid of the richest top evil big tech corporations would be awesome.

Hint: Billionaire corporations need to vanish.

That only make a vacuum which will quickly be filled by similar opportunists, so history has shown us repeatedly. The only way to stop that cycle is to change "the system" such that exploiting others, getting away with theft, and committing self beneficial murder, etc. are no longer the easy road to becoming a wealthy, thus influential and "powerful" person. How can this be achieved? No idea. Sorry.

The original purpose of the monitary system made a lot of sense for it's time. Imagine travelling for months with a load of grain to trade iron, only to arrive and find that all the iron was sold already. If only they could give you something equally valuable that you could later trade for the iron you needed... money, it's handy! But, it's also a real big problem for humanity and this here ball of dirt in space.

Yeah, there really isn't an easy answer.

This explains your preference for traditional graphic design... and for Firefox having a title bar.

The current implementation of capitalism has a lot of individual problems with easy, individual answers. Requiring all software to be open-source would be a good one. Bringing copyright laws back within sane limits, or abolishing copyright altogether, would be another.

Neither of these strategies would hurt Google, though. Google is a very weird form of "principled evil". Chrome and Chromium are open-source. I think their search engine is too. Literally anyone can build a search engine that delivers the exact same results as Google, but without the political bias or censorship (or with a different political bias). Google earned its position through pure consumer preferences. So I guess the real problem with Google is that consumers have shitty preferences? How do we fix that?

Re: A warning from the godfather of AI

Not all of chromium is open source though.

The real solution would be to make all copyright and trademarks be required to be open source.

Hint, mozilla would hate this!

Despite their restrictive trademarks being useless except for the purposes of bullying people whom they disagree with if they screw up...

Rust especially is a good example of mozilla's bs.
