[SOLVED] Where did obmenu go?

I [think I] remember using the Openbox menu tool "obmenu" in earlier versions of Devuan, but the default 4.0 install doesn't have it. Is it discontinued, hidden? If the former, is its function replaced by anything? Thanks.

There's https://github.com/keithbowes/obmenu but it isn't packaged for Devuan. It should be fairly simple to do that with debmake(1) though. See also https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debmake-doc/

Thanks, I will try adding into /etc/apt, though I am not sure about mixing different releases. My backup is to modify ~/.config/openbox/menu.xml . I must be alone in using Openbox as my DE.

IIRC MiyoLinux has some nice menus for openbox. Check in Devuan Derivatives.

There is obmenu-generator, I provide the .deb packages linked from the GitHub page:

Be sure to either add the repository or install both the perl-linux-desktopfiles and the actual obmenu-generator packages. I do not recommend manually installing the linux-desktopfiles perl modules with cpan although many random interweb "guides" will suggest it.

Thanks for your help, but I decided to just copy over the obmenu generated .xml files from my Void computer to ~/.config/openbox; I will comeback to your suggestions for obconf alternatives if I get bored writing xml.

Very good question, have been using obmenu2, doesn't work well doing a build with live-build, it just breaks. Found obmenu3 on sourceforge with a whole different gui. Working with it now, will let those interested how it goes with a build.

For me, too old school for a obmenu-generator, like configuring my own menus! Don't like icons everywhere either.

obmenu-generator is very customizable. If you don't want any icons, just remove "-i" from "execute" part in menu.xml:

Thank you for your suggestion, plus sorry I'm late getting back with you! I have tried jgmenu and like it, BL uses it and it's an enhancement for me which I like.

Appreciate your time and effort for the configuration script for ob-generator, will take a shot at it!

Am I missing something or is chimaera recently had obmenu added again? I never noticed it going missing.

I also miss obmenu. Unfortunately, there isn't really an alternative in Devuan's packages. In the virtual machine I looked at jgmenu under Artix. At first glance, quite okay, but it is not as simple as obmenu. I will continue to use my XML file and modify it as needed and wait until a decent replacement comes along.

I don't know if the dependencies are still available, but you could try downloading the. deb file to see if it will install...

I am unsure how different this may be, but YAD is available:-

Command-line only, works very well in my experience.

I use obmenu-generator and/or jgmenu on Openbox. Sorry for the interruption. I'll bow out of the discussion now...

I have now taken a closer look at jgmenu. It seems to work fine. I installed jgmenu from Daedalus packages on Chimaera. After a few tries, I managed to get it to look good by my standards. Actually I wanted to make it even better, but somehow it didn't quite work out yet. In that area obmenu was already much easier.
I have a submenu, but how can I actually make another submenu from the submenu?

I used now the old XML obmenu file parallel with jgmenu. Jgmenu is anchored in the Tint2 bar. What else I noticed is that jgmenu can also read the XML file without any problem and can also display it just like obmenu. I like that jgmenu has a search function integrated. That is already very practical. I have set it so that jgmenu uses the same optics settings of obconf and tint2.

I've been following this thread as I have a parallel Devuan Beowulf setup on another drive which I keep up to date.
It is a practise bed for when I finally leave Xfce behind and go to a 100% Openbox setup.
I'd like to recover the best part of my old #! Waldorf installation.

Recently I developed a dynamic cache for xmenu called xmenu-cache. It monitors /usr/share/applications keeping the content of xmenu up-to-date. The local directory /usr/local/share/applications should be added to the watching directories of inotify as well, but this directory is used only in some exotic cases, so I decided to leave the program as simple as possible so far. I included a built-in *.svg -> *.png conversor, because icons in .svg format weren't displayed by xmenu. You can test the menu running the new images of gnuinos-openbox (chimaera):

Alternatively, you can also install both xmenu and xmenu-cache from the package mirror in your current system:

Once you have installed the packages, you need to follow the steps below:

Add a new line xmenu-cache & to your ~/.config/openbox/autostart in order to start the monitoring tool
Replace the default menu of openbox with xmenu.sh in your ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml
If you want to customize the static part of the menu (header plus footer), copy the content of /etc/default/xmenurc to ~/.xmenurc and modify the key-value pairs to suit your needs better. By default:

As an Openbox fanboi , I recently tried out Crunchbang ++...for the second time.

After playing around with it for a while, I took a dive into the "GUI Menu Editor"...I'm not sure how I didn't notice this before.

The developer of #!++ has repackaged obmenu to work on newer systems using python3. Not only that, but he also incorporated (into obmenu) the ability to add icons to the Openbox menu (if desired).

I downloaded the .deb file from my installation of #!++, and I've installed it on Chimaera, Daedalus, and Ceres...it works perfectly on all of them!

This may be what the OP was looking for???

#!++ uses obmenu2, their debian directory is here. It's all MIT licensed so you don't need to ask Ben for permission. I'm sure he would grant it though.
