[SOLVED] Where did obmenu go?

I [think I] remember using the Openbox menu tool "obmenu" in earlier versions of Devuan, but the default 4.0 install doesn't have it.  Is it discontinued, hidden?  If the former, is its function replaced by anything?  Thanks.

There's https://github.com/keithbowes/obmenu but it isn't packaged for Devuan. It should be fairly simple to do that with debmake(1) though. See also https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debmake-doc/

To obtain a root shell use su -. Using just su will result in "command not found" messages.

Re: [SOLVED] Where did obmenu go?

Thanks, I will try adding into /etc/apt, though I am not sure about mixing different releases.  My backup is to modify ~/.config/openbox/menu.xml .  I must be alone in using Openbox as my DE.

Re: [SOLVED] Where did obmenu go?

IIRC MiyoLinux has some nice menus for openbox.  Check in Devuan Derivatives.

Re: [SOLVED] Where did obmenu go?

There is obmenu-generator, I provide the .deb packages linked from the GitHub page:

https://github.com/trizen/obmenu-genera … INSTALL.md

Be sure to either add the repository or install both the perl-linux-desktopfiles and the actual obmenu-generator packages. I do not recommend manually installing the linux-desktopfiles perl modules with cpan although many random interweb "guides" will suggest it.

Re: [SOLVED] Where did obmenu go?

Thanks for your help, but I decided to just copy over the obmenu generated .xml files from my Void computer to ~/.config/openbox;  I will comeback to your suggestions for obconf alternatives if I get bored writing xml.

Re: [SOLVED] Where did obmenu go?

Very good question, have been using obmenu2, doesn't work well doing a build with live-build, it just breaks. Found obmenu3 on sourceforge with a whole different gui. Working with it now, will let those interested how it goes with a build.

For me, too old school for a obmenu-generator, like configuring my own menus! Don't like icons everywhere either.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/obmenu3/files/

https://github.com/0x10/obmenu2

Don't forget to add a  3 on the obmenu, menu.xml!

Fluxbox with fluxmenu also MIA, lot easier to edit the menu by hand!

obmenu-generator is very customizable. If you don't want any icons, just remove "-i" from "execute" part in menu.xml:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<openbox_menu xmlns="http://openbox.org/"
 xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
  xsi:schemaLocation="http://openbox.org/">
    <menu id="root-menu" label="obmenu-generator" execute="/home/thierrybo/Sys/GIT.local.repositories/obmenu-generator/obmenu-generator -i" />
</openbox_menu>

And you also have to customize your menu layout in schema.pl. The only thing that is automatically updated is desktop files inside freedesktop categories. But even theses categories are "manual entries":

    #          NAME            LABEL                ICON
    # Deux lignes du dessous ajoutées mais Debian menu plante, mais inclut dans lxde
    #{pipe => ['/usr/bin/openbox-menu -i debian-menu.menu', 'openbox-menu debian-menu.menu', 'applications-system']},
    {pipe => ['/usr/bin/openbox-menu lxde-applications.menu', 'ob-menu lxde-app.menu', 'applications-system']},
    {cat => ['utility',     'Accessoires', 'applications-utilities']},
    {cat => ['development', 'Développement', 'applications-development']},
    {cat => ['XAMPP', 'Développement XAMPP', 'applications-development']},
    {cat => ['education',   'Education',   'applications-science']},
    {cat => ['game',        'Jeux',       'applications-games']},
    {cat => ['graphics',    'Graphisme',    'applications-graphics']},
    {cat => ['audiovideo',  'Multimedia',  'applications-multimedia']},
    {cat => ['network',     'Internet',     'applications-internet']},
    {cat => ['office',      'Bureautique',      'applications-office']},
    {cat => ['other',       'Autres',       'applications-other']},
    {cat => ['settings',    'Réglages',    'applications-accessories']},
    {cat => ['system',      'Système',      'applications-system']},

but before this block I have this:

	# Ajouté nom distribution
    {sep => "Devuan"},
    #          COMMAND                 LABEL              ICON
#    {item => ['xdg-open .',       'File Manager', 'system-file-manager']},
    {item => ['bl-file-manager',       'Gestionnaire de fichiers', 'system-file-manager']},

    {item => ['wine "C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF Viewer\PDFXCview.exe"', 'Lecteur Pdf',  'C055_PDFXCview.0']},
#    {item => ['/home/thierrybo/.local/opt/foxitsoftware/foxitreader/FoxitReader.sh', 'Lecteur Pdf',  'FoxitReader']},
    {item => ['keepassxc', 'KeepassXC',  'keepassxc']},
#    {item => ['~/.local/opt/KeePassXC.AppImage', 'KeepassXC',  'keepassxc']},

    {item => ['~/.config/conky/conky-startup.sh', 'Conky',  '']},
    {item => ['gmrun',            'Exécuter',  'system-run']},

    {sep => 'Catégories'},

and after i have this:

    {sep => 'Mes pipemenus'},

    {pipe => ['~/.config/openbox/menu/cbpp-places-pipemenu', 'Dossier personnel', '']},
    {pipe => ['~/.config/openbox/menu/obrecent.sh', 'Fichiers récents', '']},
#    {pipe => ['~/.config/openbox/menu/obrecent-test_pipemenu', 'Fichiers récents test', '']},
#    {pipe => ['~/.config/openbox/menu/openbox_wiki__Pipemenus__obrecent.sh', 'Fichiers récents Wiki', '']},

    {sep => undef},

    {pipe => ['~/.config/openbox/menu/help-pipemenu', 'Aide et ressources', '']},
    {pipe => ['~/.config/openbox/menu/bl-kb-pipemenu', 'Raccourcis clavier', '']},

    {sep => undef},

    {pipe => ['~/.config/openbox/menu/openvpn-pipemenu', 'OpenVPN', '']},
    {pipe => ['~/.config/openbox/menu/scrot-pipemenu', 'Scrot', '']},
    {pipe => ['~/.config/openbox/menu/bash-pipemenu', 'Bash', '']},
    {pipe => ['~/.config/openbox/menu/ffmpeg-pipemenu', 'Ffmpeg', '']},

test

There is a special bonus :-) I you also use jgmenu, a graphical dmenu tool, it can integrate automatically obmenu generated menu.

Thank you for your suggestion, plus sorry I'm late getting back with you! I have tried jgmenu and like it, BL uses it and it's an enhancement for me which I like.

Appreciate your time and effort for the configuration script for ob-generator, will take a shot at it! smile

Thanks again! cheers

Re: [SOLVED] Where did obmenu go?

yikes. I'll miss it but looks like there are already drop in replacements.
Am I missing something or is chimaera recently had obmenu added again? I never noticed it going missing.

Re: [SOLVED] Where did obmenu go?

I also miss obmenu. Unfortunately, there isn't really an alternative in Devuan's packages. In the virtual machine I looked at jgmenu under Artix. At first glance, quite okay, but it is not as simple as obmenu. I will continue to use my XML file and modify it as needed and wait until a decent replacement comes along.

I'm on my phone...waiting in line to pick up my son from school.  So, I can't test this as to whether it would work or not...

I probably shouldn't even say anything since I can't test it... tongue

I don't know if the dependencies are still available, but you could try downloading the. deb file to see if it will install... wink

Re: [SOLVED] Where did obmenu go?

I am unsure how different this may be, but YAD is available:-

$ apt search yad
yad/stable,now 0.40.0-1 amd64 [installed]
  tool for creating graphical dialogs from shell scripts

Command-line only, works very well in my experience.

I use obmenu-generator and/or jgmenu on Openbox. Sorry for the interruption. I'll bow out of the discussion now... tongue
