which tool for changing WLAN access

Hello,

I used wicd in the past to connect to different WLAN (like at work, at the makerspace etc)
I seem to stupid to find the right way to use that from userspace.
Is network-manager the way to got? and if so, is there another frontend that doesen't require all the gnome "extra-weight"?
I'm using fluxbox.

EDIT:
Well on that machine I'm root anyway, so
/etc/network/interfaces
ifup and ifdown are my friends, I guess.

You can try nmtui. It is provided by the package network-manager, which is not the same as network-manager-gnome. Is that light enough?

Simple-netaid uses ifupdown.

There is also KatolaZ' setnet which I understand works quite well too.

Yes. Although I used setnet in devuan jessie, I didn't mention it because I can't remember whether it depended on ifupdown. On the other hand, I can't find the packages in chimaera.

@mclien: This instruction is for the ifupdown purist:

IIRC it was never in the repos. Only in Katolaz' workspace.

There's an old version of setnet in ascii and an older version in experimental. I'm pretty sure it's still in the minimal-live isos.

Thanks for that.
As first step (as I needed it really soon) I just configured the wlan0 and network interfaces as root.
But the version to use netdev groups is neat, I'll look into that.

There is a cli tool for searching the access point in the area, but can't remember the name atm. Might be nice to fins the free public access point.

Re: which tool for changing WLAN access

Maybe you mean:

# iwlist wlan0 scanning | grep -B1 ESSID

Re: which tool for changing WLAN access

I really like grml-network, an ncurses front-end for /etc/network/interfaces & ifupdown:

http://deb.grml.org/pool/main/g/grml-network/

It needs grml-etc-core (which also provides their sublime zsh config, as seen on the Arch live ISO):

http://deb.grml.org/pool/main/g/grml-etc-core/

I've had it working on custom Debian live ISO images so it should be fine with Devuan. Probably.

Yes, that one. Thanks.

Re: which tool for changing WLAN access

Is anyone using dhcpcd-gtk?

I had to switch from wicd to connman after the upgrade to Chimaera and I am not happy with it. With connman my connection keeps dropping.
