My Dev just upgraded to chimaera is paired with XFCE and I cooked me up 2 Devuan wallpapers. I normally store my wallpapers @ ~/0/backgrounds and this works with other distros. But if I point the Desktop-Settings dialog to that directory (it's on another drive BTW) all the *.png files are ghosted and unselectable (no permissions issues that I can see). But if I copy them to ~/Pictures then the large previews show up and the wallpapers are selectable from that folder. I'm more familiar with Suse/Plasma where the very similar dialog also has a BROWSE button to load pictures from ANY READABLE directory. What am I doing wrong?
CC, use freely :-))))

In Xfce, I just right click on any image that I want on my desktop in any location and choose the "Set as wallpaper" option.

That's where you select the directory and then the thumbnails appear and you can select one.

nocando
right-clicking on any image anywhere I don't get the "Set as wallpaper" option
selecting a folder of images is impossible in the dialog, all the filenames
remain ghosted and clicking them does nothing
The only thing that works so-far is pasting the desired image(s) into
one of the /home/user/xyz folders such as Pictures.
_maybe_ I should explain :-)
user homes are on another partition, this is no flash in the pan.
But into all user homes is linked a "0" folder which includes
such gems as wallpapers, icons, etc. for use by all. These all
belong to one user but are readable (usable) by all users.
This applies to 5 systems, the users have the same userids
and same user numbers but their primary user group may
not have the same number in all systems (yet) because not
all distros do this the same way. There may be some permission
issues here (I have yet to tweak out a total all-systems completely
identical user id/number and primary group id/# matrix). I had
started out with Suse so all users' primary group is "users"
(group # 100 I think).

You cannot select files in that window. You can only select folders.
Select the folder, and then the thumbnails will be displayed.
Folder, Other, highlight the folder you want, Open.
