I don't have any icons in the xfce-panel application menu any more.
Of course ''Show icons in menu" is switched on, and several icon themes are installed.
Toggling back and forth 'Show icons in menu", switching between different themes, regeneration of icon caches, reinstallation of packages (panel, themes, xfdesktop, desktop-base) did have no effect.
This might have happened (not sure) after the recent update of desktop-base and installation of the deepsea theme.
What should I have a look at for troubleshooting?

You might start here. The path to some of the Xfce icons has been changed and some redesigned and some are now eye-shattering blue. It's being worked on. Hopefully it can be sorted.

Hello:
... don't have any icons in the xfce-panel application menu any more.
... path to some of the Xfce icons has been changed
... some redesigned ...
... some are now eye-shattering blue.
I guess it was bound to happen to Devuan, sooner or later.
Sometime ago (last year?) I read about the huge backlash to the new path Xfce was taking as it moved forward to v. 4.16.
If I remember correctly, it was mainly about Client Side Decorations.
See:

... not an issue about what the Users want ...
... why follow and mimic Gnome?
---
... XFCE and Mate both seem to have this strange and senseless desire to become like Gnome ...
... with Gnome trying so hard to be like Microsoft.
I then thought it over and decided to stay with the version I have (4.12) as long as I can so as to give me time to consider something else altogether.
I was never too happy with how Xfce worked and this sort of set a limit.
Hopefully it can be sorted.
No need (for me), I won't continue past Xfce 4.12.
Q: which would be the safest and most foolproof/bulletproof way to keep Xfce from upgrading anything from now on?
Thanks in advance.
Best,
A.

Temporary fix: https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?pid=63356#p63356

The source of the problem is in desktop-base, and I pushed the fix to git. Removing desktop-base also brings back the menu icons.
Before I issue a build, I'd like to know if anyone notices anything else weird with the desktop that is related to theming or that gets corrected with removing desktop-base or the deepsea window and icon themes themes.

Chimaera and Cinnamon/Lightdm with Deepsea: no issues.

Another deepsea related weirdness: The theme automatically gets added to /etc/default/grub upon installation. This causes grub to complain and wait at boot, if / is encrypted so that the theme files are not accessible.
Idea: Don't modify /etc/default/grub by default, but make it optional by a dpkg question?

The problem isn't related to the Deepsea theme, it has something to do with that grub starts before / is being decrypted/available for access.
Fix: please read this thread https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=3679
