[SOLVED] Installing VirtualBox in Devuan ASCII

Greetings. I don't think that Vbox is in the Devuan repos (from doing apt searches...). What's the best way to install it on my system (if it's even possible)? Or does Vbox have some kind of systemd dependency? (Sorry if this question is obvious/common...I'm still a Linux noob and new to Devuan in particular.)

Hmm, at a glance it looks like package virtualbox is available in jessie/contrib (version 4.3.36), ascii-backports/contrib (version 5.2.24) and ceres/contrib (version 6.0.6).

Ah, I hadn't thought to check backports for some reason...thanks.

No, not at all.

VirtualBox was dropped from Debian stretch just before the release:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … bug=794466

As you can see from the bug report, VirtualBox is a pile of shite and the developers try to hide security bugs from their users and can't be bothered fixing most of them.

I would strongly recommend that you choose another virtualisation solution, QEMU/KVM is probably the best:

https://wiki.debian.org/KVM

The virt-manager package provides a graphical front-end if you're not comfortable with the command line.

Ah, I did not know about that. Thank you for the advice; I do appreciate it. I'll look into those options.

There is also QEMU/KVM front-end without dependence on windows-like registry: https://bitbucket.org/PascalRD/nemu/src/master/

Wow, nemu looks great! I'll have to check it out. I'm no virtualbox fan or hater, but I am a qemu/libvirt/kvm guy, from my CentOS days.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing VirtualBox in Devuan ASCII

I'm glad to see that QEMU/KVM was able to use my Windows 10 vdi file. I know that VirtualBox had Win10 guest additions that made it run better (more resolution options for example). Anyone know if something like that exists for KVM?

QEMU/KVM has no guest additions in VBox terms. But it has features allowing to don't use guest additions for most of the same tasks.

Windows guest tools for SPICE & qxl video drivers here:

https://www.spice-space.org/download.html

It is also possible to pass through the video card to the Windows guest and achieve near-native performance:

KVM seems to be the native Linux virtualization solution, but can you migrate a KVM machine to any other virtualization system? What if I want to run something from a KVM on Linux in a Windows environment?

Yes, qemu-img(1) can convert disk images between various formats:

Convert the disk image to the vpc format and use Hyper-V.

You can also add VB to your sources.list:

Re: [SOLVED] Installing VirtualBox in Devuan ASCII

Wow, that's nice. I knew that some of the other VM systems can convert other files, but hadn't seen anything about KVM in their lists of compatible formats. At least the Linux world can handle the other system's file formats. smile I guess I ought to learn about KVM rather than struggle with VirtualBox anymore.

Can you get KVM to run Android? I've seen instructions for installing Android into VirtualBox and it says use the Linux mode. I guess it would be the same with KVM?
