Mozilla Firefox unacceptable tactics - PLEASE ADVISE

Hello:

I use Mozilla Firefox 55, an outdated version.
I do it for a very good reason.

Beside the newer interfaces being utter crap, the specific reason is that with this version I can still use three add-ons that I find very important to have while on-line.

1. No Coin
2.  Privacy Badger
3. UBlock Origin

I have managed perfectly well up to now with no issues whatsoever but this afternoon I find that they have been disabled.

When I go to Tools > Add-ons I see that each of the extensions has a legend saying "... could not be verified for muse in Firefox and has been disabled."

Does anyone know what the holy fuck is going on here?

I do not allow automatic upgrades or addons from anyone unless specifically done by me.
So how has this happened?

And most important, how can this crap be overridden?

Thanks in advance.

A.

Re: Mozilla Firefox unacceptable tactics - PLEASE ADVISE

Hi,
what fixed it for me was to download latest unbranded nightly  66.0.3
from https://wiki.mozilla.org/Add-ons/Extens … ded_Builds,
extract it and copy libnssckbi.so to /usr/lib/firefox-esr.
This made my extensions work again.
Can't say how safe that is but it works while waiting for the fixed updates.

I would stop using the browser until they fix that issue, looks like it is intentional. Lots of revenue lost to adblockers and i bet they are feeling the heat from corporate so and so's.

fork a devfox or foxuan ? :-)

BTW: I've tested a few alternatives like MIdori, Qupzilla, Konqueror but they are all more or less useless

To add, there is no "official fix yet". Firefox is not advocating such temporary fixes outlined in this thread. When you mark a setting such as studies and diagnostics to disable they should stay disabled and not affect your addons, reports ive heard is that firefox has been able to reverse these settings that the user has made manually.

Re: Mozilla Firefox unacceptable tactics - PLEASE ADVISE

that's why I opted to use the libnssWTF.so. The logic was that they would add the new certificate to nightlies, and this lib looked like a good candidate where they could be hidden. This way no about:config editing of keys you will forget to revert and no studies (which should be disabled in debian/devuan anyway)

libnssckbi.so, i did not recall the name....

I usually don't often do it, but sometimes out of curiosity and to confirm some intuitions I tinker.
I you want to know how it works you have to break it.

Re: Mozilla Firefox unacceptable tactics - PLEASE ADVISE

Hello:

Thanks a lot.

Installed Pale Moon and uBlock Origin + a No Coin file that works with it.
It all works, for the time being.

Big bonus is that the interface is not screwed up.

If this setup really works as I need, I am seriously thinking of not going back to Mozilla Firefox.

I've been using Pale Moon for years and love it. If you run into any problems (because Pale Moon has diverged far away from Firefox things that work in FF may not work in PM, but there are usually alternatives) I'd suggest searching the PM forums.  Or post here (in off topic I suppose). I usually visit this forum at least once a day.

Re: Mozilla Firefox unacceptable tactics - PLEASE ADVISE

Installing hotfix-update-xpi-signing-intermediate.xpi did not work for me, neither did setting xpinstall.signatures.required=false in about:config. Also, making extensions.json read-only or immutable was only partly successful--my addons are enabled every time firefox starts, but get switched to disabled in the middle of every browsing session. I'm on ASCII running an AppImage of more recent version of Firefox than what's in ASCII repository, so don't know if my experience is predictive/generalizable.

At any rate, in the end I just decided to jump ship. Chromium has all the plugins I use. I mitigated my unease of using a browser made by Google by turning off all the "call-home" settings and running chromium in a sandbox by using firejail, either via $ firejail chromium or # ln -s /usr/bin/firejail /usr/local/bin/chromium.

I found that all the info on firejail in Arch Linux's wiki is applicable to Devuan:

Re: Mozilla Firefox unacceptable tactics - PLEASE ADVISE

Here is the solution that worked for me: https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/commen … 602_older/

But as of today, the new esr version is already being rolled out which solves the problem.

Re: Mozilla Firefox unacceptable tactics - PLEASE ADVISE

I was a little upset with the updates to Mozilla at first, although now I can grab no script right from Mozilla's addons and not have to use the legacy version.

Ublock origin is working for me here on the stable release. There was a bug on one release where add-ons stopped working and needed to allow addons in unsecured way, which is fixed now.

I noticed though, now on my laptop which only has one set of speakers I just use pure alsa. Firefox works, I notice I can use it with only ALSA which is much appreciated.
