#3 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] Devuan Excalibur install and Pipewire. » 2026-02-25 15:38:31

@ greenjeans Thank you for that interesting information. This whole thing with the audio web api and tomplay.com is still up in the air. I tried a fresh install of Devuan with LXDE, which only installs Alsa (which I prefer) and more or less, as expected, I can't get tomplay.com to work, but all of the other expected things like YouTube and the terminal speaker test work, but it should be noted that https://www.worteldrie.com/WD5/ doesn't work either.

I have contacted Tomplay, despite not expecting much of a response. I will post when I get a reply.

---

As I thought., not much of a response from Tomplay tech. Only info is - unsupported, but works with Ubuntu and Linux Mint, and the app works in wine. I was hoping for some technical details that I and other Linux users could use to get whatever distro we want to work, but no.

#4 Re: Devuan Derivatives » Darkness - ISO Devuan Testing + TDE for AMD64 » 2026-02-25 15:30:04

OK, thanks for that. Here is why I prefer a stable install medium - I don't have much of a routine with this kind of thing:

@ samhain How does one

mark all packages installed by tde-trinity as "manual"

and why?

@ RedGreen925 Thanks for the info and a look at your /etc/apt/sources.list.d/trinity.sources file.

#5 Re: Devuan Derivatives » Darkness - ISO Devuan Testing + TDE for AMD64 » 2026-02-25 05:50:20

Cool. Thanks for the reply. If using a Devuan install without a desktop already installed, will the TDE login manager be pulled in? Is it better to start with a minimal install such as LXDE and then remove it after TDE gets installed?

#6 Re: Devuan Derivatives » Darkness - ISO Devuan Testing + TDE for AMD64 » 2026-02-24 16:08:52

I really love the TDE idea. Better to reuse code and improve on it then reinvent the wheel. Unfortunately not loving that it is testing. I would use it as a daily driver if it followed stable.

#8 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] Devuan Excalibur install and Pipewire. » 2026-02-07 07:41:57

Hi steve_v and thanks for the reply. Now I understand the context for greenjeans comment. I used the first solution for installing and implementing pipewire that fsmithred directed my attention to at https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=5867. That is stopAI's:

$ sudo apt-get install pipewire-audio
$ touch ~/.xsessionrc
$ echo "wireplumber &

pipewire &

pipewire-pulse &" > ~/.xsessionrc
$ sudo apt-get install pavucontrol

Interestingly, I have not been affected again with all of the physical audio devices disappearing from the system audio (pavucontrol, control panel, applett).

Thanks for the clarification regarding Tomplay and Flowkey. Last time that I used Flowkey, using the extension was no longer necessary, although it is a good question what the status is today.

LibreWolf not working with those two website services isn't an issue as long as I have working alternatives.

Noted regarding Rosegarden, although at this point, I am simply trying to improve my chops with these online services. However, I know that they don't replace playing with other musicians, which is what I am trying to work towards.

#9 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] Devuan Excalibur install and Pipewire. » 2026-02-06 16:42:26

Tomplay appears to be primarily a paid subscription service. Do they offer user support?

Tomplay is a commercial sheet music app... If you run into trouble using the Tomplay web interface on a Linux browser, why not get in touch with their team for help with account or score-related matters?

Linux isn't officially supported...

Why do you think you're having a "MIDI over web" issue? Tomplay doesn't use MIDI at all — it relies on real audio recordings, not MIDI signals, so there's no MIDI connection to troubleshoot in the first place.

It isn't easy to get information on the technology, when they don't support Linux. I am only using it for woodwind instrumets at this time, not sure what their keyboard support is like. I don't know how much difference there is between web audio and web midi api's other than "audio" and "midi" in the names of the api's. I know that flowkey.com uses midi over web.

I have been looking at https://webaudio.github.io/demo-list/ and https://www.worteldrie.com/WD5/ to get a grasp on the technology.

If we make the assumption that I have been looking in the wrong direction, or calling the technology incorrectly, shouldn't web audio still work with Alsa (again referring to my other post)?

Thanks for the links, but:

Music production - Gentoo Wiki

Not producing music.

MIDI - Gentoo Wiki
_https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/MIDI

Nothing about web browsers and midi over web.

MIDI controller guide - Gentoo Wiki
_https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/MIDI_controller_guide

I am not using a midi controller at this time. In the future, if I start using https://www.flowkey.com/ again, I will be.

AlsaMidi - Debian Wiki
_https://wiki.debian.org/AlsaMidi

Midi over web doesn't require any special configuration to my knowledge. It is all in the web browser (only Firefox or Chrome based). Works with Waterfox, but not LibreWolf. On the Chrome side, I know that Chrome, Edge and Chromium work with midi over web. Soundfonts and software synths aren't necessary for midi over web.

Here is some info about the TomPlay mechanisms that I am using:

#11 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] Devuan Excalibur install and Pipewire. » 2026-02-05 20:25:47

Thanks for the reply. I am largely a practical person and therefore mainly use Linux to do daily things. For me, that is practicing music and doing other daily chores. Neither Gentoo nor Arch fit into that category for me. I could go to a systemd distro, where midi over web usually just works, but I am trying to dig a bit deeper and try to understand why something vital to what I do doesn't work. Furthermore, I don't like the largely corporate oriented direction that those distros are leading the entire Linux project towards. I could otherwise choose Void Linux, which I have had better success with midi over web, but the community is lacking. While Void tries their best at being lean and mean, there is notation and other music software that isn't easily available, that I can install from Devuan...

#12 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] Devuan Excalibur install and Pipewire. » 2026-02-05 17:18:27

Wow, that is interesting. Particularly in reference to my thread with an only Alsa system:

https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=7786

Unfortunately, I can't get midi over web to work reliably with an Alsa only system... Very few people seem to have any interest, experience or technical knowledge about midi over web. I have actually been considering switching that system from LXDE to Trinity DE to see if anything improved. Alternatively, redo the install, but with only spectrwm to see if midi over web would perform differently. Of course a shot in the dark, but simplifying the system has always been my knee jerk reaction, as it can make things easier to diagnose. With midi over web however, I am not so sure, as it appears to be dependent on some lib that may not be included in a simpler system, which is weird as to my understanding, midi over web is implemented differently depending on whether the browser is Firefox or Chrome based, yet if midi over web is on strike with the one browser, it eventually ends up striking on all of them...

#13 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] Devuan Excalibur install and Pipewire. » 2026-02-04 21:46:39

Thanks for the suggestions. However, I think that you misunderstood. All audio hardware devices in pavucontrol, the audio devices applet and in the sound control panel had disappeared. It wasn't a question of having to switch to the correct device, there were none listed. As I stated, they are back now, but for how long? Something is clearly unreliable in the mix, but what as the devices remain the same?

#14 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Devuan Excalibur install LXDE, Alsa and only internal sound card. » 2026-02-04 15:06:42

Unfortunately, irrelevant for me at this stage, without any midi over web. A deal breaker, when Alsa doesn't even work at the default lower quality audio.

#15 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Devuan Excalibur install LXDE, Alsa and only internal sound card. » 2026-02-03 22:53:55

@ greenjeans From the related thread, it looks to me as an attempt to bypass the current Alsa patches from the install. As a point of reference, it can't be any worse than my current experiences with Alsa, and the semi functional Pipewire.

#16 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Devuan Excalibur install LXDE, Alsa and only internal sound card. » 2026-02-03 22:44:02

OK, I will check it out. However, it should be noted that I again have the problem after a restart, where all of the audio output (speaker test, youtube, etc.) functions properly (with the correct sound card), but midi over web has stopped working - again. This is before any changes in the quality of output have been made.

#18 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] Devuan Excalibur install and Pipewire. » 2026-02-03 20:26:37

Thanks for the reply. I will try to take a look.

This is just a standard sysv init KDE Plasma install, so nothing extra than what KDE demands at startup...

I am trying a new install on a computer, using LXDE, Alsa and only internal sound card to try to get midi over web to work with a hifi setup of Alsa.

$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [NVidia         ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
                      HDA NVidia at 0xfc080000 irq 80
 1 [Generic        ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
                      HD-Audio Generic at 0xfc540000 irq 81

I have created an ~/.asoundrc file with the following contents:

$ cat ~/.asoundrc
defaults.pcm.!card Generic
defaults.ctl.!card Generic

which at this time works with midi over web. How do I find out which of the /usr/share/alsa/ucm2/Intel/ HiFi.conf files to use?

#20 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] Devuan Excalibur install and Pipewire. » 2026-02-03 08:16:48

And a restart today, all of a sudden all of the audio sources are back again. What is going on?

#21 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] Devuan Excalibur install and Pipewire. » 2026-02-02 16:39:14

Marking this as solved was premature, as today, all of the audio sources except HDMI are suddenly missing...

So, new install as per subject, AMD64. I tried to follow the last post on this thread to get Discover working:

https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=4726

I am getting the following messages:

Unable to load applications. Please verify internet connectivity.

Under installed:

Nothing found.

Under all applications + every category including system settings:

Nothing found.

Only application addons and Plasma addons works with lists of things to install and icons.

As per the instructions, I installed Components-amd64.yml.gz both for "main" and for "non-free-firmware". I also installed the icons as per the instructions.

Note that the icons-64x64.tar.gz package for "non-free-firmware" did not appear to have any contents.

Lastly, I ran:

appstreamcli refresh-cache --force

as per instructions. Sooo. Does anyone have an idea of how I can get Discover working?

I should also note that there doesn't appear to be anyplace available in Discover where flatpak can be enabled, as in other KDE Plasma distros...

---

I just enable flatpak from the cli and included the discover flatpak integration. Now flatpaks appear in all categories, however installed programs and available programs to be installed still do not appear.

I have successfully got partial audio, despite the same error as posted above. I achieved that by the following:

# apt install ffmpeg libavcodec-extra
# apt install gstreamer1.0-plugins-good gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly

The speaker test works:

$ speaker-test --channels=2

speaker-test 1.2.14

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 12 to 96000
Period size range from 6 to 48000
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 12000
was set buffer_size = 48000
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 5.001446
 0 - Front Left

YouTube also works. Juk plays .mp3 files, but there is no audio. Likewise, I am not getting any midi over web for tomplay.com...

With the above error, I also have no way to switch between audio sources in the gui. Neither from the control panel nor the audio applet in the taskbar.

#25 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Behringer UMC204HD with Devuan Excalibur install and Alsa. » 2026-01-24 08:14:19

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone that has participated in this thread so far, providing help and suggestions. I believe that the HiFi settings are working, but not for any positive reason, but rather because midi over web has completely stopped working, as websites, like tomplay.com still go through the motions (sheet music appears, cursor moves correctly, etc.), but there is no audio whatsoever coming out. Neither backing track, nor lead melody. I have long suspected that there was a relationship between the Linux audio servers and problems that I have experienced with midi over web in the past, usually partial outages - a clear change in the reliability I expect and need. However, midi over web audio does not work at all after having changed to the HiFi settings. Zero, zilch, nada niente.

---

As far as I can tell, all other audio works:

$ speaker-test --channels=2

speaker-test 1.2.14

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 12 to 96000
Period size range from 6 to 48000
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 12000
was set buffer_size = 48000
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 5.001396
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right

YouTube works, as does the LXMusic player...

----

I should probably emphasize here, as I have done throughout this thread, that I am referring to output here. Midi over Web input will be of interest later, with sites such as flowkey.com, but at this point, I am only concerned about getting midi over web to work with tomplay.com output. The concept is the same as with 8notes.com, but more advanced in my opinion, should someone be familiar with 8notes.
