#1 Re: Installation » Adhoc Test Plan for Installation ISOs » Today 20:59:34

blackhole: Aside from that, there's obviously far too much misdirected effort. It seems like the usual "$DISTRO is too difficult for beginners to install" thing.

I see the motivation quite differently. Pulling in the same direction and being an elf in the workshop is a faceless task. Creating something new/unique scratches an itch for personal recognition. Which road do you think the "Me Generation" is likely to choose?

#2 Re: Installation » Adhoc Test Plan for Installation ISOs » Yesterday 22:53:02

KindlyDoRight . . . do you ever come up for air? LOL! Does blood or electricity run through your veins?

#3 Re: Intergalactic Communities » Spaced Linux » 2026-10-05 22:29:59

I really don't know where to begin with that . . . except that you know so little about Devuan . . .

You are assuming that everybody who creates a derivative also has the very specific skills needed to "deal with and repair the chaos being sent to us from Debian" but this is simply not the case.

N0! I am definitely not assuming that! I know that in 2026 few have the intelligence or skills to do what needs to be done to keep Devuan or any other distribution alive. Sad but true. The devolution of our species will possibly be the final nail in the "free software" coffin .

I could create a derivative, but I certainly could not "deal with and repair the chaos being sent to us from Debian" and I guess this applies to lots of derivative-creators too.

What's the point, really except some kind of bragging rights? 0 + 0 = 0

#5 Re: Intergalactic Communities » Spaced Linux » 2026-10-05 19:12:52

When Devuan was created over a decade ago, the majority of those involved were team players all pulling in the same direction toward a common goal. If that magic had not happened there would have been no Devuan.

Fast forward to 2026 and we have the "Me Generation" on steroids. It is no longer "what can WE do as a team" for the greater good but "what can I do" that will get me attention and perhaps put me into digital history.

That attitude is not one that will sustain Devuan or free software for that matter.

What we don't need are more derivatives or fancy color wheels etc.. In fact, that misdirected energy will be the nail in the coffin of "free software".

#6 Re: Packaging for Devuan » chimaera is going to archive? » 2026-09-22 17:45:00

This is a user support forum. Have you filed an official bug report where a dev will actually see it??

You can start here:

#7 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Recurring captcha from Google. » 2026-09-17 18:00:32

I gave up using "GooGoo" for web browsing over a decade ago. I do have a few email accounts which I keep archived for historical purposes and for other functions which would be a PITA to switch to elsewhere.

#8 Re: Intergalactic Communities » Spaced Linux » 2026-09-13 17:00:15

Good question and I cannot retrace my thought process at this time . . .

#9 Re: Intergalactic Communities » Spaced Linux » 2026-09-13 14:09:50

Of course,  Camtaf. My point is that what is appropriate for this forum and what is appropriate for WWW are two entirely different things. Spinoffs posted to WWW are very carefully vetted over a long period of time..

#10 Re: Intergalactic Communities » Spaced Linux » 2026-09-12 17:49:55

Ron said: Doesn't this thread count?

Not for much . . . We have to have high standards or we will have no credibility.

#11 Re: Intergalactic Communities » Spaced Linux » 2026-09-12 16:46:41

That suggestion is misinformed and premature.

Do we really need another grain of sand on the beach? Vanity derivatives are a dime a dozen and not all of them make it to WWW.

Only derivatives that have been well received,  tested and vetted get that far.

Start by introducing the derivative to:
https://dev1galaxy.org/viewforum.php?id=9 and

See what the response is and go from there.

PS. Also note that new well-vetted derivatives are only added to WWW at the time of a new release.

#12 Re: Documentation » An unofficial Guide to runit on Debian-derived distros (version 2) » 2026-09-12 14:52:45

Note that brocashelm's original post #6 above which was aggressive, insulting and demeaning has been completely rewritten. The two posts following are a response to that tirade.

==============================

@brocashelm

No . . . we will let you continue to embarrass yourself with your hostile and inaccurate ramblings so that others (that haven't already figured you out) can see who and what you are.

ralph.ronnquist and a few other key developers created and have maintained/nurtured Devuan since the fork. I am not sure that Devuan could have survived without him. He is endowed with the most brilliant and knowledge-diverse mind I have known in my lifetime and I have know a few  Nobel Prize nominees.

You are just the neighborhood dog that keeps barking, barking, barking and has, to date, not contributed anything of value to Devuan that I can remember.

#13 Re: Documentation » An unofficial Guide to runit on Debian-derived distros (version 2) » 2026-09-11 23:00:21

The "Guide" is within the category of "Documentation". Do we need to eliminate that option?

#14 Re: Intergalactic Communities » Spaced Linux » 2026-09-10 21:12:45

That would be up to the creator(s) if they choose to do so.

But ponder this . . . In the big picture, another derivative is inconsequential. What is needed is qualified talent to deal with and repair the chaos being sent to us from Debian.

Thanks for figuring that out! I am sure someone will benefit from your findings.

#18 Re: Off-topic » AI and programming. » 2026-08-30 14:58:41

We are definitely lost down the rabbit hole . . .

#19 Re: Other Issues » Matlib's GTK2 corner » 2026-08-17 04:13:45

@IamThatIam . . . Paragraphs exist for a reason. Your unintelligible "glob" is something I can imagine an AI would regurgitate. I just don't have the skills to decipher that "dump". But then I could never get a handle on James Joyce either . . . LOL!

#20 Re: Off-topic » AI and programming. » 2026-08-17 02:06:14

The Dali Lama is right. All of our "suffering" is self-inflicted. Being able to maintain emotional "neutrality" toward whatever comes your way is quite liberating!

#21 Re: Off-topic » AI and programming. » 2026-08-17 01:35:40

The mind is the source of all our woes . . .

#22 Re: Off-topic » AI and programming. » 2026-08-17 00:19:45

I am just attempting to make you aware that "sleeping with the enemy" is a dangerous gambit that could easily have catastrophic consequences for "freedom" and you, personally. Digital knowledge and skills are quickly lost if not used repeatedly. Imagine a future that due to reliance on AI solutions, humans lose their ability to effectively control their digital devices? Game over.

#23 Re: Off-topic » AI and programming. » 2026-08-16 21:52:39

If you know anything of human history, the pattern is to create new tools/toys which eventually come to bite us badly. That is because humans are fatally flawed in their judgment and motivations. What is needed is a transformation of the human mind from never-ending pursuits of froth and foam that keeps us running in place and repeating the same blunders over and over .  .  .

IOW . . . we need to stop shooting ourselves in the foot!

Perhaps we are what we eat but we definitely become what we think. All the Sci-Fi I read in the 50s is now horrifyingly manifested in our daily life.

We need deep wisdom not a roller coaster of titillation with shiny new s**t to survive the future that is on our doorstep . . .

#24 Re: Other Issues » Matlib's GTK2 corner » 2026-08-16 17:12:26

IMO, Devuan should be an "AI-free Zone".

Why supposedly intelligent life forms participate in activities that tighten the noose of servitude is beyond my comprehension. It's a bit like lemmings jumping off the cliff . . .

Time for some house cleaning . . . ?

#25 Re: Forum Feedback » touché » 2026-08-02 21:59:52

I am happy to hear that some of the feedback was useful.

Also consider this . . . Do not mourn the closure of that preliminary exploration! Behemoth threads running over a long period of time quickly get bogged down. Breaking up the progress of a project into smaller bits makes it easier to find stuff and also to do side-by-side comparisons.
