Not every user allows PMs.
Look for the envelope pic and Email link below the user name.
Sometimes it's missing sometimes not...

Don't forget the influence these big players have on the kernel.
That affects all Linux based systems.

You may also need to install orphan-sysvinit-scripts for some compatibility.

YMMD!

I used Debian since its earliest days even before it had toy story names.

My relation with Debian now:

Breaking trust can be done in a blink.
    Regaining it takes years.

#155 Re: Devuan » Devuan kFreeBSD » 2021-02-23 07:05:55

I don't remember the timeline good enough, but there was a very unfinished Debian/kNetBSD too, plans for Debian/kOpenBSD, and there still is Debian/(k?)Hurd.

"Debian, the universal OS" ... is this subtitle still in use?

The de facto (k?)Linux monoculture this world is aimimg at is a danger!

#156 Re: Devuan » Devuan kFreeBSD » 2021-02-22 12:59:24

These projects died.
Gentoo's experiments with BSD kernels are fossiled history too.

Maybe digging out the last Debian/kFreeBSD and slowly upgrading from that status quo would work?

Cross protocol browsers are more fun!

Yayyyyy!

#159 Re: Devuan » The future of 32bit and Devuan? » 2021-02-17 01:54:05

FreeBSD degrades "i386" to a 2nd class citizen.

I think we'll still see 32 bits in the ARM and MIPS dimensions for a long time and x32 (special 32bit userland (can use more registers!) on 64bit kernel) pops up as topic too again and again because being even more efficient than pure 32bitish x86.

So most software would still need to be 32bit clean, even if i386 gets dropped.

I think dropping i386 makes no sense, but who knows when Debian will have the next totally fair voting?   :-P

Sometimes members of the geminiverse look like focussing at being divisive.  Not even Gopher support?  Come on!  We need browsers that unite, especially because there is a lot of cross linking between the Gopher and Gemini dimensions!

And for the occasional link from a gopher hole to some unavoidable pages via HTTP, some of the well known TUI browsers are neat (elinks, emacs, links, lynx).  Some of them additionally can access news, mail, fsp, and lots of other protocols too.

THAT IS WHAT A BROWSER WAS MEANT TO BE IN THE BEGINNING OF THE WEB!

Please unite instead of being divisive.

This is basically just a pointer to the next link, but sometimes interesting comments show up on Hackaday, so I thought mentioning this one may lead to more pointers, links, insights, ... for this discussion.

Why you should migrate everything from Linux to BSD

Without the URL, this is not reproducible.

#169 Re: Documentation » How to inspect 3rd Party .deb packages before installing! » 2020-11-11 20:36:32

Instead of installing binary debs compiled elsewhere, build that stuff from its deb-sources on your target system or even better, do it on a throw away VM.

It is not possible to delete an account if you have posted.

I didn't mention deleting all messages.
Disabling the login combined with a marker below the username that this user no longer is active and/or turning the username unclickable could be enough.

Sure my typos are cached, archived and whatnot at wherenot, but why should I not be able to correct myself at every time I feel the wish to?

#173 Re: Forum Feedback » Unable to edit any of my own posts » 2020-09-20 11:57:37

I an other forum where I can edit all my posts at any time, I sometimes prefer to add to my last post (after a timestamp as separator) as long as it hasn't got a reply to keep information tighter together.  I'm only fixing minor stuff like adding links to newer messages (if the message's info is too outdated), updated download locations or new versions sometimes in older messages or at the top level post, depending on the thread.

Not being able to edit my posts at any time and age feels scary and I'd revolt against it if I were a frequent writer here.  Luckily I'm not!   :-P

Re: Changed context after reply

If you reply to stuff, always quote the relevant parts.  That way you cannot get tricked by an evil "editor" and the quoted context survives even if the original writer commits ™forum suicide™ by emptying all messages.

#174 Re: Forum Feedback » Unable to edit any of my own posts » 2020-09-19 19:52:59

Ahoy!

Same for me: A fresh post can be changed, older ones cannot.
Maybe there is a limited time to cure typos and what(k)not and afterwards it gets sealed for eternity...

Yarrrrrr!

#175 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Average Uptime of Your Devuan Systems? » 2020-09-13 17:21:40

Uptime records mean outdated kernels.
Uptodate kernels mean ™frequently™ interrupted services.
:-/

I see that conflict, and I have it too, and I'm definitely not proud on running outdated kernels on some serving minions.

My longest runner (beowulf@armhf) is nearing 100 days uptime now.
Updates not needing a reboot are applied, but getting that one's kernel updated definitely is overdue!
Ok... I'll do it now... sorry for the IRC noise!
The majority of the interruptions only will impact my LAN...
