Devuan kFreeBSD

Do you remember the "Debian GNU/kFreeBSD" project? It was closed for lack of volunteers but I think it was a great idea.

It would be fantastic if Devuan could inherit and revive this project!

Devuan GNU/kFreeBSD just the name rocks!

we need a build environment.. currently only OBS provide this for persoinal test, the devuan build ci system forces people to follo devuan rules and in that way we cannot test property .. with OBS people can play with the package until get something refined and tuned! like my php fixed pacakges without shitstemd

Re: Devuan kFreeBSD

These projects died.
Gentoo's experiments with BSD kernels are fossiled history too.

Maybe digging out the last Debian/kFreeBSD and slowly upgrading from that status quo would work?

Re: Devuan kFreeBSD

I don't remember the timeline good enough, but there was a very unfinished Debian/kNetBSD too, plans for Debian/kOpenBSD, and there still is Debian/(k?)Hurd.

"Debian, the universal OS" ... is this subtitle still in use?

The de facto (k?)Linux monoculture this world is aimimg at is a danger!

That is actually the point, but this is not Linux monoculture, is Red Hat monoculture. I am totally fine with corporate shaping Linux the way they need with their distro, but it is disappointing when all the distros must follow its lead because it wants all the support available to develop and reduce the cost of the products of its portfolio, doesn't matter it is still free software. You kill free software when is developed with corporate mindset.

Don't forget the influence these big players have on the kernel.
That affects all Linux based systems.

I started working on that:

But I can't make any promises. It's not an easy task.

Re: Devuan kFreeBSD

I don't really see the point...

Why use a kernel from another O/S - just 'Devuanize' one of the BSDs, if it's the look & feel that you're after.

Alternately, get on board the Hurd project, it was designed to work with GNU (Linux) software utilities.

Re: Devuan kFreeBSD

Hello:

Danielsan wrote:

... fantastic if Devuan could inherit and revive ...

I beg to differ, it would be anything but fantastic.

Please don't take it personally but I find it really hard to get my head around what you are proposing.

Devuan quite definitely does not need to inherit other people's projects or invest time and manpower to revive anything.
Much less something that no one else seems to have any interest in.

What the Devuan project needs, in the face of its present situation, is to manage to stay alive.

Like I recently posted elsewhere:

Altoid wrote:

I'm quite sure there are a great many areas where your expertise could be very useful to the Devuan project.

The most delicate part of the balance the Devuan project has achieved is related the dependency it has on Debian.

eg:
As most of us know, Debian's systemd brainchild (pun intended) has left Debian and now works for MS.

Now, if in spite of his having left Debian, Poettering's accolytes decide to continue to push things even further and eventually manage to alter that delicate balance, the Devuan project will undoubtedly be in great danger.

ie: Debian software which now can run on Devuan thanks to the efforts of the Devuan developers/maintainers could directly cease to be available or be too time-expensive for the project's team to adjust them to the systemd-less Devuan.

Eventually, Devuan would have no applications to run and cease to exist.

And, as you surely grasp, that is something that would affect all Devuan based distributions.

The Devuan project cannot under any circumstance afford to undertake this sort of thing.
Makes no sense at all.
What the $%#" for, to what end?

As if it does not already have more than enough on it's developer's/maintainer's plates.

Like I said: the Devuan project, first and foremost, needs to be able to survive.
And that, by itself, is a huge undertaking.

And if it can be pulled off, it will truly be a huge accomplishment.

Best,

A.

I agree with Camtaf, if I'm going to use the FreeBSD kernel I would rather use FreeBSD (and I do). The FreeBSD kernel is made for the operating system.

I believe that the Hyperbola Project working on something similar. Maybe giving them a hand would be the way to go.
