Just got around to trying an installation from this 'live' from a pendrive. all went smoothly except the auto login bit, I thought I had auto by leaving all but creating a separate home partition in the installer. Never mind, maybe I didn't understand how the option was written. ![]()
What I am having a little bit of a problem with is double clicking, I'm used to single clicking, & as yet, haven't found where to alter that.
I also removed the bottom panel, as it takes up too much of the screen.
I had previously tried an installation from the regular installation media, & found it quite slow, as was Debians originally, which basically drove me to using live installable media. This version is on a par with most live installable distros that I have experienced.
It would be nice if a version of this Devuan Live could be made available from the repos, without any added programs or desktop environment, just a simple window manager (maybe TWM), with wifi, to get going with, so that one could add whichever WM or DE & programs that they wanted.
(i.e. Just a basic X system with wifi.)
I know there are third party versions available, but it would be nice to be able to have a basic X system as a choice from Devuan itself. ![]()
I keep a foot in the OpenBSD camp, I can have a usable system in less than 1GB, whilst most L/W Linux distros are now over 2GB when installed, it's getting really bloated! ![]()
FVWM95 was a way of getting Windows95 users feeling comfortable on Linux, I think most newbies now realise that Linux isn't Windows. ![]()
TWM should still be available if you don't want to add another WM, but Fluxbox, Openbox, JWM, or IceWM tend to be better options for a few extra MBs.
If I remember, I switched to Fluxbox because it wasn't being maintained, but there are a lot of people who like & use Openbox nowadays, maybe you would like to give it a try.
Glad to hear you got it working. ![]()
Looks like a lot of people have been waiting around for the official release before jumping in, no worries, more power to Devuan. ![]()
Normally you are on your own when installing, so I think it is just a 'convenience' rather than a 'bug'.
Some distros do allow you to choose to see it in plain text or not, so I think it is just a 'choice'.
A bit more info will probably be needed to help you, such as make & model of your printer.
I think it is 'designed' to be faulty, so that RH can sell you a support contract/package & make money out of Linux. ![]()
Football is regarded by some as a religion, & therefore should be banned from the forum, along with politics! ![]()
I also have an Atom (64bit) based computer that has a 32bit bus, so needs a 32bit system, a bit annoying, but as it only has 1 or 2GB ram, it doesn't require a 64bit system.
Congrats & thanks to all the team. ![]()
I don't think 32bit Linux is for the scrap heap just yet, nor 32bit BSD, there are still a lot of old machines running it out there, it would be too costly to just drop it, maybe in 20 years....... ![]()
Generally speaking, your system is on your mSDHC card so you wouldn't be likely to try & remove it whilst writing to it or not, & that is why you have a disk activity warning light, however, if it doesn't flash when using an external disk or pendrive, then it does need to be attended to.
Maybe you should take a look at a couple of distros based on Devuan --> MIYO or Good Life.
There are quite a few of us that like to put our own choice of programs on our computers, these 2 seem to have it right, & they include firmware for wifi. ![]()
Glad to see you got it sorted. ![]()
Have you seen this before? I chose UK during the install process so not sure why there is russian text showing.
I have a feeling that uk is Ukranian, probably need en or gb.
It's a nice idea, but just as with FLTK software, which I really like, somebody has to have the skill & interest to maintain the packages.
I'd love to see a distro made up of alternate toolkits, one per kit, but again, there has to be someone skilled & interested enough to do it.
I don't have the skills, or the time, so I just settle for a lightweight distro using a Window Manager instead. ![]()
Welcome aboard. ![]()
That bit of info about GPT & Grub not liking each other is useful info; there is someone trying to install another distro on an old machine, & that could be their problem. If I come across their post again, I'll mention it. ![]()
Maybe the networking interfaces could be stripped out without too much disruption to produce a new base for those who like to just use a window manager & don't use X11's networking capabilities(?).
(I only use X11 to run my WM, as a home user of Linux.)
A wild guess....maybe something to do with this?
If pstree is called as pstree.x11 then it will prompt the user at the
end of the line to press return and will not return until that has hap‐
pened. This is useful for when pstree is run in a xterminal. It's not rocket science. ![]()
Just start with a [ then write the word code, then put a ] write your actual code, then close the tag with a [ followed by a / then the word code followed by another ] that's all that's needed.
some codeThere were 2 reasons I gave up using Debian to do installations, one was lack of needed firmware, it just became tedious having to add them in after getting it installed, the other was how slow an installation was, using tailor made 'live' distros was so much quicker & far easier. ![]()
I like minimalism, so I go for distros that use a WM, my preference is Fluxbox, though I have used Openbox quite a bit as well.
As an aside, I finally persuaded my sister to ditch Windows XP & use Linux, so spent yesterday setting her up with AntiX, because I know it well enough to keep her up & running.
That's strange if this is the same machine you're talking about,
Sorry, this is on a different machine, it's an oldish netbook that can boot from SD cards.
I was originally trying it on one of my desktops that has a TP-Link PCI Express card in it, (works no problem with Debian/AntiX). (I think the model number is TL-WN781ND.)
I just tried a 'live' Devuan RC 1.0.0 on another of my laptops, & it couldn't find a network either!
(So, maybe, it's down to Devuan itself.)
[Anyway, I'll be off trying a new version of my backup O/S today, (OpenBSD).]
In Refracta, all I do is install it & wifi then works, but not in Crowz. (Running live.)
I have since tried installing Crowz, (todays JVM, downloaded), & the wifi didn't come up, tried again by using dpkg, rebooted, but still no wifi.
Having rebooted after installing the firmware should have produced a result, but it didn't, no connections were available.
Anyway, I've now put GreenJeans Mate on one SDHC card, & MIYO on another, & they work in my netbook. ![]()
