#51 Re: Off-topic » Is systemd still bad in 2025? » 2025-08-11 09:39:37

It seems to be usable - I use Raspberry Pi OS on a RPi5, which has it, but not as a particular choice, I have Devuan on my RPi4B.

UHD resolution

Crikey, I don't even like HD on small monitors, & anything bigger than 21" needs to be seen from another room.....

Love my WXGA 15" monitors.... big_smile

@ zapper
It doesn't matter that there are already similar players, this one is personal.... big_smile

Quick & dirty music player to me is mc. smile

#55 Re: Installation » Fresh install vs dist-upgrade for next release » 2025-07-21 09:23:57

Another thing, I have multiple computers, & have learned to set up one how I want, then take a snapshot & use that to install to other computers. wink

#56 Re: Installation » Fresh install vs dist-upgrade for next release » 2025-07-20 14:02:17

Back up your personal data, (as usual), make notes of any config changes you made, then do a dist upgrade.

If it doesn't work out, install afresh.

#58 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Shifting /home » 2025-06-30 07:40:04

Use fstab & disk ID to set it up.

#59 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Shifting /home » 2025-06-29 16:57:15

If you are confident of your /home back up, I would just remove p4 & p5, then create p3 as the new /home, & copy over your data.

#60 Re: Off-topic » Caveat emptor -> Kingston DataTraveler Exodia M USB 3.2 » 2025-06-26 17:15:52

I bought 3x 32GB DataTraveller G4 USB3 pendrives, & whilst they are OK to read from, they are abysmal to write to & take hours to fill, literally!

I now just use them to play music from....

#61 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Where to view system requirements Devuan » 2025-06-24 09:37:52

It can run on less, but, 4GB ram & 2GHz processor will likely be the minimum you would want to use. smile

#62 Re: Off-topic » GNOME is taking the scum bag approach still... » 2025-06-17 17:05:02

I've got Wayland running on my RPi5, so far, the only problem I've had is with touch screens...so I'm willing to stick with it on this SBC, but tend to stick with using Xorg on most of my other machines, (& as noted, Xenocara on OpenBSD). smile

#63 Re: Off-topic » GNOME is taking the scum bag approach still... » 2025-06-16 09:28:10

I don't use Gnome, never have, & I don't like systemd either, so no worries as far as I'm concerned. wink

#64 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Which Trackball device? » 2025-06-10 09:03:04

I've used digital mouse ever since they came out, very reliable...never used a roller/track ball device - too expensive & bulky for me. wink

#65 Re: Off-topic » What is X ? » 2025-06-09 08:29:56

'X' is a graphical windowing system, a GUI (graphical user interface), allowing multiple (graphics & terminal) programs to run on your desktop.

Anything that does the same is similar to the original 'X', like Wayland...

#66 Re: Devuan » [SOLVED] Excalibur Timing » 2025-06-04 08:53:38

I think it took about 2 months last time, we only have a small dedicated team, but they are wonderful people that give us this distro... smile

#68 Re: Freedom Hacks » Debian not providing new 686 kernels in Trixie » 2025-05-25 17:08:38

To get a more up to date kernel, maybe copy your kernel config file over & try running it with the modern kernel source code..... (?)

#69 Re: Freedom Hacks » Debian not providing new 686 kernels in Trixie » 2025-05-25 14:19:45

Probably because mainline kernels include all the new drivers......or it may not have been stripped.

#71 Re: Devuan Derivatives » List of Devuan derivatives » 2025-05-09 09:42:58

I've used both in the past, & MIYO was the first choice for me for quite a while, but now, if I don't use the official media, I will use Crowz, which is another lightweight setup.

I was just pointing out that some newbies might be put off as they were outdated... wink

#72 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] MBR and efi booting issue » 2025-05-09 09:35:12

Try using grub install from the live disk...

I found that I needed to be connected to the internet for grub to install properly....

#73 Re: Devuan Derivatives » List of Devuan derivatives » 2025-05-08 08:49:10

The ones I know of are MIYO & Star, I believe.

#74 Re: Devuan Derivatives » List of Devuan derivatives » 2025-05-07 17:38:09

I notice that there are several distros listed in the first post that no longer are available, maybe we need a new listing(?).

#75 Re: Off-topic » Lightweight system without (too) bloated software » 2025-04-20 13:52:48

As you have installed Abiword, I'd install gnumeric as well, much easier than sc-im, (which I quite liked myself as a CLI program).

Also, might want to check out feh for images - https://feh.finalrewind.org/
