As always, same sh!t different kernel from testing.
The b*tchcat fetch slightly abused.
Thanks photographer for the awesome snapshot.
In case anyone want to have it, direct link to download the (7360×4912) resolution.
Thanks for the hard work. There are a few impatients around, so glad you've made a ISO for the next.
Back on topic:
Joining Nili in the GNOME fanboi club. What a desktop. I love it :-)
I do not deny it Indeed it is great a desktop. Latest version 41+ version is a lot stable even more lighter than the previous one. I like it so much aswell.
Anyone may call me a fanboy, i always used GTK on my Linux journey as my past scrots tells. First time on GNOME shell field anyway. I thought i would stay a little while on fedora, but i would keep it stable for my daily tasks and test other distro in her boxes. I just did recently an big upgrade from 34 to 35 on fedora, in general it went well as a beginner for me there.
I remember Fedora 17 around 2012 from a friend of mine who was/still is a regular user, how much have been changed since then and how stable it is today. At that time we've been on #!, My friend was watching my crunchbang openbox stable, and i was seeing his gnome frequent crashes and we made comparisons often together at work
Now i'm using it myself GNOME Shell. It is different with Wayland, well matured, stable and usable.
Same sh*t, different backgrounds, thanks to the author for genius captured.
I can't show much from a WM like CWM, though i'm addicted to it.
Edit: Other note,
With the latest kernel 5 series (from testing) it has been seen that the memory is rised a bit, just a while ago from
5.10.46-4
5th Sep 2021 70Mb RAM
to
5.14.9-2
8th Nov 2021 106Mb RAM
It is clear that every new version have a memory boost. It has always been so, but from my previous experience i notice that kernel upgrade lately is much higher.
Thanks Nili, the idea is to spread Devuan to the world and many users will use it. I wish I could developers will be encouraged to make ultralight distributions as shown in this nice picture.
I think typical Devuan user do it itself, as i explained above. Devuan devs produce Debian without systemd just that.
There are already minimalistic derivatives from community users, maybe take a look within the thread, perhaps you'll find one that fits your shoes.
All right! good job posting it here. Here we're like a big family of photographers
Hope you post other custom photos shortly as i like watching members posting their scrots.
Also, i wish Devuan made you feel comfortable and happy.
Best regards!
69 RAM consumption? But what do you do to consume so little resources the system of the machine?
Devuan NETINST ISO > Expert Install > None Tasksel Selected > Minimal Xorg installation aka "xserver-xorg-core", > startx autoload from .xinitrc file > minimalistic Window Manager=CWM > feh to load background images.
Every new version that comes from the kernel comes a bit bloat due to new features.
OS Kernel copy on my system used/uses memory over the years:
Kernel 2 series 15MB MEM
Kernel 3 series 25MB MEM
Kernel 4 series 35MB MEM
Kernel 5 series >5.10 50MB MEM
Kernel 5 series >5.14 70MB MEM
Latest from testing/daedalus "devuan 5.14.0-2-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.14.9-2 (2021-10-03)" boots from 50 to 70MB memory.
A bit of optimizing after OS installation, tweaking, removing unwanted stuff by using guide https://wiki.debian.org/ReduceDebian - Well, i don't need to use always reducedebian after i used once. But, heleped me on first install copy years ago.
Patience, many free time to waste, a PC/Virtual Machine to learn or a bit of experience in the end for newbies. I learned a few things by breaking many times my system or customs. I never used a virtual machine for tests, i learn by break my real shits and it was scary on my early linux startup.
So, with NETINST ISO you builds your system according to your preference like Arch Linux. Therefore you have inside only what you want, accurate, light weight. More or less so i can explain it briefly, if the question is addressed to me.
Oooh. How edgy. Imagine if you did something really dramatic, like installing Ubuntu.
I could do it, at least to check it how it goes currently, i started my jurney with Ubuntu once a while ago. But, I would not go back there as i do not find myself comfortable.
I think Fedora is better option for me to being close on GTK/GNOME upstream. This interests me more.
Desktop background from Joe Motohashi
This is 3rd time i have upgraded my old a$$ dual core. Originaly an E2180 upgraded to E5700 and currently E8600.
The improvements are significantly since the initial stages.
Now that the parts are ridiculously priced, it's worth doing tests. There are still room for other changes regarding memory from 4 to 8GB or even to a better proc Core™2 Quad.
Today package "base-files" fixed version wrong number for testing.
It used to show on my workstation:
Devuan GNU/Linux 4 (daedalus/ceres) x86_64
Instead of
Devuan GNU/Linux 5 (daedalus/ceres) x86_64
After the last change it appears properly version 5 for testing.
I had made changes myself aswell early, but i am happy that it took official form properly.
Thank you!
I can't said anything bad about testing/daedalus either.
Head_on_a_Stick has a point here.
Off-topic is a lovely place to stick up.
If i had started Linux early before 2010, I'm sure compiz would have stick on me.
Pictures by Joe Motohashi used as desktop background.
Edit: I have to clean the scrot due to incorrect fetch naming.
Thanks for sharing the above xmonad config Ogis1975.
"Daedalus it is one version advance than Chimaera/Ceres."
There is no Chimaera/Ceres. Ceres is always unstable. Packages go from Ceres to testing. Although Chimaera has not been officially released as 'stable' yet, Daedalus appears to be the new testing. But it is not one version more advance[d] than Ceres.
My mistake in mentioning "Ceres" above, I have correct it. Thank you for point out sgage.
That's true, i mean Daedalus it's one advance over Chimaera, but not ceres aka sid.
Although this topic was used for SID packages too, let it remain so as we're on OFFtopic, or move to a more favorable thread if you find it right.
Thanks!
Xmonad, by most of WM i know, this one and a few others have ran away without even trying it seriously.
I used default config for sure, i tried once editing config, made a big mess and didn't know what to do more so, i give up easly. Your scrot reminds me of when i was dealing with spectrwm or hlwm.
I was a beginner on tiling configs, I had extraordinary time by simply editing their "----rc" especially when it is was raining outside.
Not everyone is in a hurry, everyone according to the needs, sometimes rushing brings consequences and boredom. Who care if it's new if you are satisfied what's consist and have done yourself? Never rush for the sake of others or trends.
Very good optimization Ogis1975, minimalistic as ****.
The unicode bars colors @PS1, reminds me mIRC scripting days.
I used to generate many of those blocks colors back in the Windows IRC days
So far, from Daedalus-testing (Devuan 5) aka Bookworm-testing (Debian 12) got updates for apps that i daily use.
Nautilus 40.2
Geany 1.37.1
Disks 40.2
ntfs-3g 1:2021.8.22-2
gtk+3.0 3.24.30-3
mediainfo 21.03-1
Awaiting to upgraded very soon 2/5 days.
mpv to 0.33.1-1
alsa-mixer 1.2.5.1-1
Also i hope Debian maintainer pass to sid soon those two-below packages, i had a few concern with them so i can't wait to check it if they've been fixed.
feh 3.7.1
conky 1.12.2
Many other packages have been updated since this topic was opened. That's why i like testing or better sid, but i'll stick on testing for some reasons that requires less attention than sid.
Guys, Do not be confused, this topic is Devuan 5 (testing) aka Daedalus.
See the thread name.
Leave alone Chimaera here.
Daedalus it is one version advance than Chimaera (not released yet).
This thread serve to test (next testing/after chimaera releases).
For people who like to play in advance with next testing
I open this topic asking about Daedalus, and edited it as soon as it was set.
Personally, I have taken all the risks and responsibility on my testing jurney.
More here about releases names.
https://www.devuan.org/os/releases
We know versions and names are a bit confusing at first (even to me) on the early releases, as some walk faster with repos than with official releases names.
I hope i have somewhat clarified my position and forgive me if i have created a bit confusion if i did.
BR!
I personally used Chimaera-testing for a whole year 2020-2021. Therefore, i have been with chimaera a bit early, for a year i tested it and enjoyed what it served. Having a very minimal system with less packages and apps, I find it very easy to navigate test after testing.
So far, my copy Devuan GNU/Linux 5 (daedalus/sid) seems to start well.
Yes, i did by simply change repository from chimaera to daedalus.
deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged chimaera main non-free contrib
deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged daedalus main non-free contrib
Official images are here

I haven't seen the Daedalus ISO on this pages so far, i believe because it is too early.
Congratulations to the passers on the next adventures
Very nice QNX-alike theme durham, I used FluxBox for about a year haven't seen before this stylish.
Perhaps i haven't looked over BlackBox to find it, or it is a new one?
I like very much!
Thank you Ogis1975, all credits goes to Devuan NETINST. I only done some optimizations and tweaks.
It still boot the oddie for 12sec, and i come to desktop window manager CWM for 70MB everytime i reboot.
As an old hardware model with no SSD inside, i think im satisfied for it.
Thanks for your feedback as always bro.
Two different beasts.
