#51 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Emacs 29.4 on devuan daedalus » 2024-11-06 16:35:44

Hello.

The latest version of emacs in Devuan Daedalus is 28.2. If you want emacs 29.4 (this version is found in daedalus-backports), you have to manually add the backports package repository.

Backports provides newer versions of packages already in the testing suite but linked to stable dependencies. This is useful if you prefer using newer software versions over well-tested stable versions. It is advised to disable backports and only enable to install specific packages.

In short, just add to your /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged daedalus-backports main
deb-src http://deb.devuan.org/merged daedalus-backports main

then

apt update
apt install -t daedalus-backports emacs

Good luck.

@zapper
Yes, I agree, but since my computers use exclusively Nvidia products, NetBSD falls behind because Nvidia support is tragic...

like I would ever use a system that equates "The devil" with "being free"

Like hell... pun wasn't originally intended, but its still appropriate.

First of all, it’s not a devil, but a daemon….The “demon” actually refers to something called a daemon, which is a computer program that runs waiting for something to happen (such as a connection from the internet for a web page). The trident refers to the “forking” of processes in the computer. There is nothing demonic or evil in any of this. Although, bearing in mind that the world is ruled by signs and symbols, there is some truth in your words...

FreeBSD has a lot of trash in it anyways from linux world.

I would like to know more about it if possible.

#53 Re: Off-topic » Several Russian Linux Kernel Maintainers Removed » 2024-11-04 16:23:53

To be honest, I don't really like the direction Linux is taking. Strange, politically motivated decisions make me think that it is not clear what else to expect from this person.

Therefore, after thinking about everything, I decided to migrate to FreeBSD without haste. I have already done this by transferring several of my computers. Two left. I'll do some more testing and I think my migration will be complete next month.

Goodbye Linux and welcome to FreeBSD!

#54 Re: Devuan Derivatives » Darkness - ISO Devuan Testing + TDE for AMD64 » 2024-11-04 12:34:46

There was no problem at all

Thank you for the info.

#55 Re: Devuan Derivatives » Darkness - ISO Devuan Testing + TDE for AMD64 » 2024-11-02 11:31:32

I will keep on testing for a week .

Hello.

TDE R14.1.3 has been released in 2024.10.27. Did you upgraded your install? If so, how did it go?

#56 Re: Off-topic » Several Russian Linux Kernel Maintainers Removed » 2024-10-25 15:35:36

Mr. Torvalds was forced to do it.

Yes, I agree. Well said. I just think it's bad when open source programs become political tools...

#57 Re: Off-topic » Several Russian Linux Kernel Maintainers Removed » 2024-10-25 11:26:58

I don't see any politically charged diatribe, just facts. And I'm about as unbiased as they come.

Can't see or just don't want to see?

#58 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] Thunar freezes after NAS is shut down » 2024-10-23 13:34:26

Hello.

Maybe it is related to packages, called gvfs-backends and thunar-volman because in default xfce4 installation these packages do not exist, i.e. packages are not installed.

#59 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » runit: exim4 is broken » 2024-10-09 15:47:07

Look again:

Yes, you are right. Somehow I missed it. Thank you.

#60 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » runit: exim4 is broken » 2024-10-09 11:26:03

That said and unless you really need something as complex as exim4 running in your box, you may want to consider using a simpler, much lighter and less complicated MTA such as Dragonfly.

Hello.

This package is not available in the official Devuan package repository...and compiling it is not a good idea.

#62 Re: Off-topic » AI? Yes, we've heard of it ... » 2024-10-03 12:13:09

There is nothing new in that. Satanists push what is good for them.

#63 Re: Devuan » Why has no one enhanced sysvinit? » 2024-10-03 12:11:51

I have moved back from openrc

Hello.

I would like to ask, what is the reason for this? Why did you come back to sysvinit territory?

#64 Re: Devuan » Why has no one enhanced sysvinit? » 2024-10-02 14:57:40

Hello.

I agree with everyone who has said in previous posts.

Sysvinit is a great example of unix philosophy. And if a person is not satisfied with this, he always has the option of using the malware-systemd.

#65 Re: Devuan » takes 23 seconds to login or "su" [recent change] » 2024-10-01 13:43:45

Hello.

Please check Devuan 5 release notes

Here is an excerpt that I think will be important to you:

xserver-xorg-core now uses libseat1 to control rootless startx and access to
input and video devices. This has several advantages, the most significant being
that it removes the dbus dependency from xserver-xorg-core.

libseat1 can use either seatd or elogind as a
backend. If you need to override the default choice (autodiscovery), use the
LIBSEAT_BACKEND environment variable.

If you are using seatd as the backend, ensure the user is a member of the video group.

This is only relevant to running startx as a user, xorg run as root by a display
manager is unaffected.

#66 Re: Off-topic » Question about Debian issuing patches » 2024-09-29 10:33:07

The attack starts with a rogue computer spoofing a fake network printer. The attacked host is running a CUPS server and allows the fake network printer to execute arbitrary code on the server when trying printing with the fake printer.

So, the risk is higher for publicly opened networks with cups servers running. Private networks (i.e. behind a NAT) are at risk if authorized users (or intruders) set up a rogue computer for the attack inside the network.

#67 Re: Off-topic » Question about Debian issuing patches » 2024-09-28 15:28:46

Hello. Check this:
https://security-tracker.debian.org/tra … ckage/cups

It is fixed in sid, but not fixed in testing and stable.

#69 Re: Off-topic » AI Safety » 2024-09-19 15:43:01

You safely can bet on [Horror Sapiens]'s greed, so shit definitely always will happen.

I agree.

#70 Re: Devuan Derivatives » Darkness - ISO Devuan Testing + TDE for AMD64 » 2024-09-19 15:41:45

Thanks for the reply.

Personally, I don't think using testig in production env is a good idea, so I'll refrain from testing your iso. Have a good day.

#71 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Very strange: is it connman or network-manager? » 2024-09-19 15:39:24

To be honest, I've never had a problem with connman.

#72 Re: Off-topic » AI Safety » 2024-09-19 11:28:18

The best way to deal with AI safety is disable AI completely. if humanity wants to survive, there is no other way to avoid danger. Unfortunately...

#73 Re: Devuan Derivatives » Darkness - ISO Devuan Testing + TDE for AMD64 » 2024-09-19 11:25:52

Hello.

Thank you for your work! How about iso, based of Devuan 5 (stable)?

#74 Re: Documentation » Some question about the great Devuan » 2024-09-14 10:47:57

Hello.

For sysvinit management you can use package

sysv-rc-conf

This package provides a terminal GUI for managing "/etc/rc{runlevel}.d/" symlinks. The interface comes in two different flavors, one that simply allows turning services on or off and another that allows for more fine tuned management of the symlinks. Unlike most runlevel config programs, you can edit startup scripts for any runlevel, not just your current one.
