Nice! Will grab ASAP and try out.
Just wondering:
- will there be a way to eliminate the desktop "background" image, or make it one transparent pixel?
- will wicd re-connect promptly (and will it shut off wifi)?
- is there a "dark" (easy-on-the-eyes-on-night-shift) theme respected by Synaptic? Or sct and redshiftY? (Or both?)
- if I add vlc, will it be able to find the default audio device?
- coming back from suspend, the display won't remain blank, will it?
- if I set the power-manager to shutdown on power-button-press...
(Sorry, my wish-list grows ever longer)
Off to SF…

HextorBRX wrote:

Somewhat Reticent: I cannot launch live CDs (except Calculate Linux and BunsenLabs) so grub2win is the way to go. Should I install Linux first and Windows after?

Most people I've met bought their computers with Windows pre-installed; they use its partition management tools to (defrag and) shrink partitions, then gPartEd to add partitions for Linux, either before or during install - making sure to either prevent bootloader (usually grub2) installation or confining it to a partition (say, /dev/sda3), not the MBR (say, /dev/sda).

Most versions of Windows become very cross (deliberate obfuscation, InMyOpinion) after a Linux install (just as arrogantly) takes over the MBR (Master Boot Record of drive) bootloader, which terrorizes newbies. (Is W'10 better-behaved? More testing needed?)

If you haven't installed either, it's likely up to you - just remember that Windows wants to take over the MBR bootloader, and any update may try again.

In any event, add grub2win to Windows before you let Windows connect to the internet (and attempt an update), especially if you've just installed Linux/Android. (You should have plenty of time to "authenticate".)

I believe the requirement of a separate EFI boot partition is related to newer computers with UEFI firmware; most older hardware BIOS doesn't care about GPT or EFI. When experimenting, I usually make no more partitions than necessary.

As I became more informed about my hardware, I found that careful USB drive setup made many ISOs acceptable to the usual BIOS (becoming a retro thing). If your can't boot from USB (or CD) at all, the tiny Plop distro is designed just for that situation, and fits on a tiny CD - or a floppy!

(Sorry if this seems a bit long - a short answer simply wouldn't be complete, or safe.)

For those who insist on multi-booting with Windows, consider the grub2win project at SourceForge.
Saves on stress and hassle when a Microsoft update affects the MBR. Perhaps it should be S.O.P.?

#29 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » ASCII: vlc fails to run. » 2017-08-14 05:34:40

Considering recent "specially crafted subtitles file" vulnerabilites, perhaps having only have version 2.2.6 available would be wiser?
(Via backports, right?)

#30 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Security updates for devuan jessie » 2017-08-11 15:43:12

For keeping up with rapidly-changing apps, would (something like) a "fire-jail-ed" "appimage" make more sense?
Expecting speedy service on oldstable seems ludicrous.

#34 Re: Devuan Derivatives » GNUinOS - Libre » 2017-08-01 16:07:54

Login screen says Debian 8; I saw no shutdown/restart/suspend/etc options on it
Installer insists on adding bootloader (but respects redirection to partition), starts copying files without warning O_o
Good: smile Lxde, Customize Look & Feel; light & dark themes respected by Synaptic
I'm not familiar with simpleNetAid; only-connection "ens35" failed to (find device,) connect sad
¿Does this assume an internet connection will be present and active on boot?

#35 Re: Off-topic » OSS, ALSA, pulseaudio, JACK, ... » 2017-07-21 08:53:37

Note to self:  VLC - audio device HDMI (not "default") brings SPDIF option, might just work (without PA!). big_smile

Alternatively, keep them all happy with the grub2win project at SourceForge, and avoid constant takeover struggles.

#38 Re: Off-topic » When you can't tell the difference between Windows and systemd » 2017-07-06 03:51:40

In my experience, Microsoft did on occasion drag their feet, but never flat-out refused to fix a bug in public view.
Over time, their larger-$ customers (and later some persistent white-hat hackers) forced many clean-ups.
neutral
We should also acknowledge that several other distribitions (and several non-Linux operating systems) have avoided such code.
We are not alone.

#39 Re: Installation » How to use connman-ui instead of wicd? » 2017-06-29 08:35:09

All the newest DebIan-based ISOs were using wicd.  I didn't search bug-reports for such issues.
I have older Slackware-based ISOs that don't have this issue - some using wicd.

Of course there is! smile But it doesn't work. sad Several presented controls seem to be ignored*. hmm
(Same on several DebIan and DebIan-based ISOs I've tried.)
And once in a while, after an unpredictable usually-long time, wicd will actually re-connect.

Q:  Is there a way to change from wicd to connman-ui gracefully?
The spins with connman I've tried re-connect promptly; wicd may eventually, or not.
For me, manually telling wicd to re-connect every time seems like way too much hassle.
(I don't want to lose connectivity in the changeover process!)

These are nice!  Full/max versions resemble my usual first test choices.
I recommend some sort of "dark" theme; Adwaita-Dark (for one) makes synaptic tolerable during dark-shift.
Not sure how to do that in OpenBox; I think synaptic takes gtk3.
Nice to see yad too - which repository is it in now?
Haven't tried PaleMoon on Linux for a while; nice to see it pick up (most) favorite add-ons, and OS theme.
(I have to add pavucontrol to get my speakers working right; maté's "sound" seems too dumb-down for me - minor.)
I see xfce-power-manager, is it better than the maté version?
Again, nice ISOs. Thanks!

Since Devuan intends to support more process-management systems than just sysV, that's too narrow. "Init Freedom" means more than just one (sysV).

Meanwhile, (from another thread about a menu entry):

fsmithred wrote:

I suspect some of my frustrations came from updates - not just to synaptic or apt, but to sudo and gksu.  At any rate, my first attempts produced custom ISOs, but several features were buggered (like auto-mounted drives, and access thereto).

FluxBB hasn't accumulated many such themes.  Most themes it has seem old, selection is limited.
Perhaps you (and others with similar concerns) could contribute some, and demonstrate?  It is Open-Source … and may be easier than you think - especially with their community's encouragement.

#48 Re: Installation » [solved] How to update to ascii? » 2017-06-19 21:26:21

About minor problem,
my first guess (I am not an expert):
inspect /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
look for line with "devuan-ascii.lists", and (if found)
either
remove line
or
(if comment) change format so apt doesn't confuse it with a repository line (I am not an expert) maybe start with ## (double #)
or
(if repository line) correct spelling or format
.
(Am I close?)

Xfce, Openbox, Fluxbox, JWM, i3 and netinst in amd64, and JWM in i386.
One I tried came with apulse, the Adwaita-Dark gtk3 theme, and connman-ui.
Interesting.
A "live-build demonstration"; no support recommendation indicated at SourceForge.
(edit:  Does it need some Thunar plugins re-installed?  Certainly a repository /etc/apt/sources.list update!)
Has anyone tried refractasnapshot on one of these?  (add Yad .deb from ibiblio or SF for *-gui)

*(Not the DebIan-based Genesis and Livinia ISOs.)

How's this for a sources.list ?

I appreciate the darker styles - shades of grey with bold text colored - mercury (amber), radium(emerald), cobalt(blue).
In my case, the emerald green is initially most pleasant, but for long dark-shift use amber is gentlest.
It's not easy to find a theme or style that uses only amber, orange and red hues for text and darker shades (grey, brown, etc) backgrounds.
