They forgot to enable some option in this kernel.
Adjusting the laptop brightness using the keyboard buttons, working with the linux-image-6.1.0-11-amd64 kernel, stopped working after the upgrade.
And powersave says "Brightness adjustment is not supported" with this kernel.

@czeekaj

Removing support for apparmor, what is the inherent benefit of removing?

I started rebuilding the kernel for a computer with a very weak processor.
https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=5415
The goal was the minimum kernel size and initrd. Apparmor was disabled by default in the OS, so I removed it at the same time.
The practical result is the OS loading speed.

For more or less productive processors, you don’t have to do this. Performance at work depends more on the number of running tasks, and they can be managed in another way.
Well, replacing the HDD with an SSD gives a more tangible result.

Regards.

@Altoid

I have no intention of bringing such a controversial (and OT) subject to the forum.

I agree, let's not do it.
I studied political economy at university, starting with Marx and Engels many, many years ago.

@czeekaj

...My friend have you tried to libreboot / coreboot your x201?...

Over the years you become more and more lazy. smile

I just need a stable OS, with a minimum of settings, that does not require special attention.
From experience, the stable release Debian and Devuan, in particular, correspond to this.

I rebuilt the kernel, taking the sources of the 6.5 kernel, removing from it support for AMD, virtual machines, apparmor, etc.
Downloadable 32 vs 64, a few years ago I just looked at the test numbers in the hardinfo program, 64 is faster.

e@AA:~/Desktop$ uname -a
Linux AA 6.5.10-x201 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Thu Dec 7 16:23:17 EET 2023 x86_64 GNU/Linux
e@AA:~/Desktop$

This works on x201 bases of problems with all buttons and other hardware.

The laws of the market work.
There will be demand, there will be supply. Someone will definitely occupy the niche of 32 bit OS.

But, as an example of the future.
PClinuxOS, a rolling release without systemd, probably the first to implement the latest changes, abandoned 32 bits more than 5 years ago.

#357 Re: News & Announcements » Debian and 32-bit x86 » 2023-12-20 12:29:20

Not for the sake of argument, just thinking out loud. smile
It is clear that electronics become obsolete morally faster than physically and the price of used ones falls quickly. Today, when a computer with an i5 on the secondary market costs the same as a couple of cartons of cigarettes, maybe it’s time to retire 20-year-old veterans? They have exhausted their service life, and the likelihood of failures is growing.
Instead, more productive models are thrown into the trash.
And secondly, how much does the work of high-class programmers cost to maintain i386?
Or are there no more problems in Linux?

#358 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] can´t install .deb file, system then asking for insertation of cd rom » 2023-12-20 10:18:41

If you're tired of typing on the keyboard and want a more “human” way, install the old pre-legal mc. And if you install alien, then MS will install rpm packages with one click.

@PedroReina
apt-get "does not understand" the path to the file, it must be run in the directory with the file or it looks for packages from sources.list.

Regards.

#359 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] can´t install .deb file, system then asking for insertation of cd rom » 2023-12-20 09:45:41

Everything is simple

#cd /home/devuan/Schreibtisch
#apt-get install XnViewMP

#360 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] A folder with no name » 2023-12-19 08:33:08

Can you find out specifically in which directory this folder appears and with what rights?
Thank you.

Screwing around, feet up on desk. One hand for beer, one for rodent, all the overlapping windows and flashy animation nonsense is fine.

Here, this is my working position. smile
Therefore, the mouse and DE with a maximum of GUI to configure everything.

And secondly, if cli, then you should at least try to fulfill the ergonomic requirements, position the keyboard in the desired position, angle at the elbow joint, etc.

Then it will work out with all your fingers and blindly, but the pose is practically the only one for the whole day.

#362 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Kernel 6.1.0-15 causes network-manager to hang when shutting down » 2023-12-14 14:57:28

What prevents you from having several kernels installed and choosing the one you need when loading the OS?
What prevents you from selecting the desired kernel version from the repository in Synaptic, for example?

But OK, I won't interfere.

#363 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Kernel 6.1.0-15 causes network-manager to hang when shutting down » 2023-12-14 13:28:26

The 6.510 kernel has been installed on the laptop for a week now, and it works without problems.

#364 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Kernel 6.1.0-15 causes network-manager to hang when shutting down » 2023-12-14 13:18:05

The repository has a program grub-customizer, this is a GUI editor for the configuration file and a bootloader installer.

#365 Re: Devuan » error: Detected X Server version 'XServer 1.21.1.7_64a' is not suppor » 2023-12-13 18:51:52

Couldn't get the F button to work?
Unfortunately I can't say anything about HP.

I have three different Lenovo, everything works on all of them, including brightness adjustment.
For this, three things are needed - support in the kernel, an ACPI table and support in the DE.
Trinity (my DE) has a special package for Lenovo.

HP Ubuntu supported, so I understand it should work.

Regards.

#366 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] non-free firmware not installable in daedalus » 2023-12-13 09:51:25

In my experience, it is possible to copy the .trinity folder if the same version of TDE is used. In most cases, it is faster and more reliable to simply configure the interface through the control center. Less trash.

#367 Re: Off-topic » Weak processor + minimal DE = no miracle! » 2023-12-12 21:59:39

Thank you.
I think the performance should simply be enough for specific tasks. And they are different for all of us.
I have a ThinkPad for “couch surfing”.
For more serious ones, there is the Ideapad Y500, i7-3630QM/16/256/500/SLI (two identical video cards in parallel).
But it’s heavy, you can’t put it on your belly. smile

#368 Re: Off-topic » Weak processor + minimal DE = no miracle! » 2023-12-12 21:18:34

I have already changed. smile
About the same money as your ROC-RK3328-CC.
ThinkPad x201, i5-560M, 4GB, 128 SSD.
5 hours new battery, everything works.

#369 Re: Off-topic » Weak processor + minimal DE = no miracle! » 2023-12-12 20:02:31

I have no objection at all to someone using any programs.
But the essence of my thread is that with a weak processor the OS turns into a single-tasking, or rather single-window, if we mean browsers.
And no “light” DEs, browsers, etc. things won't help. If you want normal work, you will have to pay for a more productive computer.

#370 Re: Off-topic » Weak processor + minimal DE = no miracle! » 2023-12-12 19:27:43

Two people play this game. smile
My city website first asked to disable *block, then it stopped showing the contents of the page opened via the link from the main page.
Now there’s a new feature, an advertising widget, by clicking on it and selecting “Block...” from the drop-down menu, we get a red rectangle containing not only this widget, but all the main text.

#371 Re: Off-topic » Weak processor + minimal DE = no miracle! » 2023-12-12 18:36:46

I personally don't want to.
This is the KDE5 project, it is “heavier” than the Trinity I use. If I just install it, it will pull a bunch of Qt5 libraries with it

#374 Re: Off-topic » Weak processor + minimal DE = no miracle! » 2023-12-11 09:08:48

Oh, choosing a browser is a fascinating process that occupies the minds of most users, judging by the number of publications. smile
I'm not a gourmet in this matter; for me there is not much difference between FF and Chromium.
As long as the processor does not hit the ceiling of its performance, everything works.

And a respected colleague  @fsmithred correctly pointed out overheating.

The loading graphs presented above are very similar to the stress test graphs. The average desktop works in stress mode for several tens of minutes. Then it turns off due to overheating. In real life, a computer can lower its clock speed, further reducing performance

P.S. As an illustration, today's photo is Lenovo Y500.

To support laptop buttons, the acpi-support package must be installed; I did not have it by default.
