#1 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » three questions regarding Realtek RTL8812AU » 2025-09-06 19:12:13

UPDATE: I installed Debian 13. The line referring to my USB wireless adapter was: wlx80691a5b3dd6: Wireless ethernet (802.11x). This line was NOT included in the long list Devuan provides. I include this just in case someone wants to track it down.

@greenjeans The laptop is an HP, model # 17-cp3000, bought directly from HP. The problem with the internal network card is that the connectors that look like a Target corporate logo fell off the card, and I tried and tried to reconnect them, but I failed. BTW, it's my impression that many of the laptops being sold today have no cd-rom drive or Ethernet port so the laptop can be made trendily (is that a word?) thin. I have an HP laptop from 12 years ago and it's wonderful. I wish I could go back in time and buy another one.

#2 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » three questions regarding Realtek RTL8812AU » 2025-09-06 17:26:36

I downloaded another ISO and used it to start another installation. The same thing happened. There was no screen asking me for a firmware .deb. The text on the aforementioned screen was: "No Ethernet card was detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your Ethernet card, you can select it from the list."

And BTW, this laptop is one year old, has an AMD Ryzen 7 processor, has 16 GB of RAM, has no Ethernet port, and has an internal Realtek network card with no connection to the antenna. The Linksys WUSB6300 v2 (with Realtek RTL8812AU) USB wireless adapter was inserted into one of the USB A ports which works for other things. A USB flash drive was inserted into a hub which was inserted into the USB C port, with the drive containing the necessary Realtek .deb.

It is possible that the very long list of entries contains one for Realtek 8812a, but I looked again and did not see it. The last entry in the list is "none of the above," which I hoped would bring me to a screen asking for a .deb, but selecting it only brings me back to the long list.

Maybe I'll try again with Devuan 6, but for now I'll use Debian. Thanks for everyone's help.

I have a laptop with a defect: the internal network card's connectors have come loose. So I bought a USB wireless adapter. Okay, I bought a few. Two of them use the Realtek RTL8812AU chipset, which I guess is a problem in Linux.

I tried to install Devuan 5, but when it got to the page where wireless/Ethernet is configured, I was shown a page with a hundred or more adapters/chipsets, at which point my eyes glazed over. Then I tried Debian 13 and its wireless/Ethernet page was straightforward: I had a choice of configuring the internal card or the external USB adapter.

Question 1: Was one of the Devuan choices the one to choose for the Realtek RTL8812AU? If so, what was the text and how far down the list was it?

Question 2: Why didn't Devuan use the Debian logic for wireless, given that it's a Debian fork? Is that logic infested with systemd?

Question 3: Why is the Realtek RTL8812AU chipset such an orphan in the Linux world? I tried a number of distributions, with most not recognizing the chipset. Does Realtek release Linux drivers for some chipsets and not others?

#4 Re: Installation » any way to obtain Excalibur ISO? » 2025-08-11 18:46:01

Well, Excalibur is not ready for prime-time just yet. On the first page, I was given a "missing firmware" or something to that effect. But then during the initial access to the mirror, the installation failed because it could not get there (the first option). So I need to wait until the regular release.

Thanks for the response, Altoid.

My "burning" was trying to do a migration from Debian to Devuan. It left me with an unbootable system. No big deal, I always make back-ups.

I tried searching for an ISO, but clearly my searching skills need work.

I will try building a system with that ISO tomorrow.

Now that Debian 13 has been released, I'm impatient to get an Excalibur ISO. I've been burned by migrating from one Devuan version to another, so I'm not thrilled about changing sources.list to get it. Is an ISO available?

I had a working Debian Xfce system. I followed the instructions to migrate to Devuan. After the reboot stage, the system booted into a system prompt. I continued entering the listed commands. When I was through, I rebooted only to see Debian in the OS to be booted. Then it returned to the system prompt. I will reinstall Debian.

@ fsmithred "Correct. It's the user that has to change their behavior."

Funny how Debian and Linux Mint don't have this problem. But, yeah, it's the user's fault.

I tried again, only this time I selected "Ignore." We'll see what happens.

The hardware is an Intel NUC NUC12WSKi5 with 16 GB memory and a Samsung 970 Pro 512 GB NVMe SSD. Previously I was able to install Linux Mint 21.2 MATE.

I wiped the SSD using gnome-disk-utility (simple format). I started installing Daedalus. After the partitioning step -- I chose guided using entire disk -- I got a message telling me that Devuan could not inform the kernel of changes. I have no idea what that means. I tried it again with the same result. This is a showstopper bug.

Then I installed Debian 12 MATE with no problems. Methinks you have a serious bug.

@ralph.ronnquist

Yes, I noticed that (non-free) on a Debian system. I did not notice it on the Devuan system, so you're probably correct about the problem. This is on an AMD laptop that has always acted strangely with certain Linux distributions.

And strangely, after a couple of reboots, the sharpie-text went away and now text looks normal. Whatever.

I just tried to upgrade a 4.0 MATE system. There were some strange things happening that contradicted the release notes, but I persisted. After it completed, I looked at the downloads folder. Holy cow! Most of the filenames looked as if a child had attacked them with a sharpie. I took a screenshot, but the screenshot filename was corrupted the same way. I copied it to a USB flash drive and transferred it to a Linux Mint system. The file and the filename are fine, so it's a display issue on the original system. I will now rebuild the system, but not with 5.0.

If someone wants to tell me how to upload files here, I can show the screenshot.

I have a new NUC, the specifications of which are below:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en … tions.html

The Ethernet card is Intel Ethernet Controller i225-V. However, during installation, I was notified that there is no Ethernet, which is strange because there is an Ethernet port in the back and I suspect that Intel did not forget to include the internal card. I was able to install via the USB flash drive, as Devuan complained that the mirror was faulty.

So where do I find the device driver for Intel Ethernet Controller i225-V?
