cannot inform kernel of changes

The hardware is an Intel NUC NUC12WSKi5 with 16 GB memory and a Samsung 970 Pro 512 GB NVMe SSD. Previously I was able to install Linux Mint 21.2 MATE.

I wiped the SSD using gnome-disk-utility (simple format). I started installing Daedalus. After the partitioning step -- I chose guided using entire disk -- I got a message telling me that Devuan could not inform the kernel of changes. I have no idea what that means. I tried it again with the same result. This is a showstopper bug.

Then I installed Debian 12 MATE with no problems. Methinks you have a serious bug.

*What* the message means: when the installer wrote the new partition table to the SSD, the usual course of events is to inform the kernel that that drive's partition table changed so that the kernel can trigger actions to ensure that the nodes in /dev are updated. I don't know *why* it sometimes fails, but I have seen it on occasion.

You might try restarting the installer after that happens. If the partition table is as you set it last time, don't write the changes (i.e., use the drive as-is). (I *think* this is possible.)

I have the same issue with an Asus E200H.
After trying to "Cancel" or "Go Back", I confirmed to ignore the error message and I've installed Devuan.
But I don't like this way of doing it.

With Chimaera the installation went forward smoothy.

Edit: I used netinstall from USB

I got the same message with the netinstall image from USB.

Restarting the installer did not change the behavior of the installer on that step of the installation process.

There are tools to re-read the partition table, partprobe and kpartx.

Correct. It's the user that has to change their behavior. On the second run of the installer, don't partition the disk. Use the partitions you created on the first run.

I had the same issue on a Lenovo N22 that was formerly a chromebook.
Rebooting at that point and using the new partions was also what I did to continue, although it gave the error again, I ignored it the second time round as there weren't any changes.

Looks to be an installer bug.

The bug seems to be specific to the Devuan GNU+Linux installer. The graphical Debian GNU/Linux installer (Debian Bookworm 12.1 Netinstall) does not have that bug.

Funny how Debian and Linux Mint don't have this problem. But, yeah, it's the user's fault.

I tried again, only this time I selected "Ignore." We'll see what happens.
