@zapper and @blackhole

You both have interesting sub-texts, or whatever it is called smile

Thanks for the tip with Hyperbola! There are certainly many more future-oriented projects. jOS is not yet born smile and maybe it will be called LinuC OS, or C4C, or TC Container?

This morning I woke up thinking of using TinyCore as the base container. It's so small that it runs on just about any old computer. A first aditional container is built for it, which extends TC and ensures 100% hardware detection and provides update management. Then a second container, which turns TC into a distribution that comes with pre-installed applications and a tool to install/compail extensions from other distributions. Then a third container, which turns TC into a full-flower distribution. Depending on requirements, TC can be installed with one, two or three containers. In addition, one builds a "client container" for TC, which makes "TC and the first container" a jOSclient that connects to an application server and works there with a preinstalled Linux distribution. All in one, configurable with containers.

I will develop the idea further on LinuC in the section "LinuC internals", LinuC OS smile

And please don't worry about Devuan! Nobody wants to take it away from you or even remodel it! And I'm not a software developer either, as you can read on LinuC. But I'll try to motivate some good people. And if it turns out that there are already projects that are on the way (Hyperbola, Fedora coreOS), LinuC will simply be what it was in my first idea, a simple guide to installing old computers with Linux . No problem, it just takes time. And today I have little of it, because I have to wash clothes ... by hand smile

@golinux

I received and read an email from you again. I will keep it to myself because it reflects your personal opinion. And I don't know if you want to publicly post this opinion here. I post my personal opinion publicly without fear, even if it is deleted every now and then and my topic is closed. That is not what I and others mean by freedom of expression! But maybe something in my post caused you to get scared?

I also read this open letter that you posted.

http://lkml.iu.edu//hypermail/linux/ker … 02496.html

I don't know him and I don't know if it's you either. His arguments sound a little scared. As far as I can see, systemd is not "dangerous", just an idea of how to put things in order. Of course, I also wonder how the security of Linux distributions is doing. Sure, there are apparently still no viruses against Linux. It's good! But what about malware that is Linux internal? As a former IT engineer (with little programming experience) I think that there are enough opportunities to abuse Linux by the Linux programmers themselves!

And this is where ideology comes into play! People are scared of the power of Microsoft and we all know Bill Gates' background and also his current "projects". So people’s fear is well founded. It's different with Linux, because the Linux makers are scattered all over the world, mostly they are anonymous and often quite strongly ideologized (example antiX). It is interesting that nobody seems to be afraid of Linux. Why not? Because it's free? Does that make it less dangerous?

Ideologies seduce people and often ideologies even become fascist. Just because Linux has so many distributions doesn't mean it can't be misused. But of course, the possible abuse would then be better hidden and not so easy to find. Maybe this is one of the reasons why some are so strongly against systemd? I just guess.

As I wrote before, I'm not an IT engineer with a lot of programming experience. I'm not a systems specialist either. I am (or was) involved in project management. For many this discipline seems to be unnecessary, especially for those without discipline smile. Well, should they think that way and keep putting their projects on the wall, what's my business? Yes, it concerns me a lot, because I am basically a simple Linux user and then I reap the problems of failed or ideological open-source projects.

For about 3 months I have been looking for the "best" Linux distribution for me. No, I haven't found it yet and I run the risk of wanting a new distribution smile. As well-founded as Devuan, with tools as good as antiX, as easy to update as Fedora coreOS or Silverblue (container method), as small and light as TinyCore! And of course made by good IT engineers and supported by supporters who are socially, methodically and didactically experienced. A dream? We will see.

But the MOST IMPORTANT thing is that the distribution should be IDEOLOGY FREE! Because it is ideology that creates problems for us, not systemd.

At the moment I'm working on my own project, it's called LinuC. Perhaps this project will one day also lead to a LinuC OS, which is based on the above 4 distributions and takes over the positive from all of them? If God willing, yes!

Until then, I'll just work on my project every day and hope it will be a success. My "warnings" are formulated in general terms, but I plan to include detailed warnings in the individual distributions so that other users know what they are risking.

linuc.mipropia.com/

At the moment I am still working with antiX, even if I wish it was a goodX, an antiX without anti-ideology. And I also hope that Devuan will one day be free of ideology, because it is already systemd free. Come back to the normal world and forget about the ideological world, because ideologies are just fantasies of unstable people who have let themselves be caught! By whom? You know exactly smile

Have a nice weekend smile

@golinux

Recently someone wrote to me who has a lot of life experience:

The "I" is just a kaleidoscope of data coming and going but has no substance.

I'm afraid he's wrong. The "I" has a lot of substance and it can become very dominant, especially when the "I" stands for ideology. I like Buddhism in general, but it brings the danger of nihilism. One has to be very clear and sure not to cross the line.

My reply to @zapper was quite relevant. After all, @zapper is a supporter of the BLM. And yet we were able to communicate, even if I think to differentiate between black life and non-black life is at least nonsense, if not racism. It's a shame that the communication has now been blocked by your "I". It was an opportunity.

God bless!

Are there any? And if so, what is it?

First two articles that deal with open-source and crisis, in different ways:

https://tomtunguz.com/open-source-cloud … ty-crisis/

https://www.linuxadictos.com/en/la-gest … ierto.html

Risks and opportunities, as you can see. But I'm not an entrepreneur and I'm not a world saver either, thank God!

Linux father Linus had a wonderful idea! He did it wonderfully! But unfortunately he made it freely available to everyone. Sure, because he's a good guy, no question about it! But the result is really critical. How it started:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source

"Open" versus "free" versus "free and open"

Open source development projects are positive. There are some that really impress me, like gimp and musescore! As a user, I experienced the second almost from the start, even before the first official version. And I still use it today, it's great! Of course, I am also impressed by some Linux distributions, but not by others. But everyone has their preferences.

So far everything is fine. But now comes the problem. How many Linux distributions and derivatives are there? It should be 5, maybe a maximum of 10. But unfortunately it really is a crisis! No, I don't mind if everyone thinks he have to make his own distribution. Should he, if he doesn't know how else to spend his life meaningfully. But it bothers me that as a user I have to search for the good distributors in this pile of "crap" for days or months! This is what makes life difficult for us as a user!

And what about the applications? The same problem. In a few areas the matter is clear and there is a good one and maybe 3 others who will eventually die again. In other areas there are dozens or even more! What for? And if you choose one that is not that good, you won't get any support! Always the same argument: we are all volunteers and our time is limited. Ok, then just delete the project again. It's very easy!

Open source is good, but it needs more discipline! Yes, open-source requires more discipline than a company's proprietary product! Why? Because the company fires you if you do badly. Not with open source! Therefore, open source needs more discipline. But because it is open and free, everyone who is incapable thinks he has to do a project now ... for example a wikifarm!

Is it difficult to do a wikifarm? No. You need a wiki software (MediaWiki for example), you need a free hoster and you need a logo and a "code of conduct" for the user ... and you are a little king! And there are so many who would like to be little kings but are not. You can call it egoism, or egocentricity, or narcissism, or whatever. But it is definitely not good. Because these people have everything they need to run a wikifarm, just one thing not: discipline! And so the project soon becomes a trap for hundreds or thousands of users. All delivered to some "experts" who are not.

Alternative? Sure, host it yourself. Sure, so even more "little kings". Where is this going? To chaos. Do we want to go there? No.

Do we want such "little kings" in the open-source movement? No. Do we want them in the social counseling center? No. Do we want them in the hospital? No. Do we want them in the police? No. Do we want them in Washington D.C. in the "White House", or in Buenos Aires in the "Pink House"? No. But why the hell are these psychopaths in all these places anyway?

Because psychopaths have very special mental abilities to sneak in everywhere, always with the same tricks and the same empty words!

There are two books on this that I would like to recommend here. No, not about Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Franco, Peron and whatever they were called. There are two other books, one very old and the other fairly new:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_(Plato)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_Farm

I'm afraid one day we will have to destroy these psychopaths ... or the psychopaths will destroy us!

Here is a link to a somewhat special website about an international, pagan, nazi, feminist sect, with probably a few hundred million members! No, they are not "holy", they are psychopathic!

http://jsm.6te.net/anderes/hagia-en.html

And I will now not go on writing now about God and the devil, anyway that is the point!

Have a nice Sunday and God bless you! Amen!

@golinux

Yes, I'm a little tired too. It's almost 7 p.m. smile And that happens to me every day! 53 years and a small pancreas. Maybe she'll do it until 60? If not, I don't particularly like fruit juices smile

One shouldn't hold a grudge against Windows users. I was one too, starting out as an IT engineer at the cantonal building construction office in Zurich. 250 users, they were all networked at the exact moment I started the job. Windows 3.11 and Novel Server! Fortunately, my main task was project management in software procurement smile  And we had a very good network team, one level higher, that is, at the central management. After 3 years I left, I had seen enough corruption. Millions of CHF illegally passed on to friendly entrepreneurs, at management level sad There isn't much you can do about it, except blow the whistle at the cantonal parliament. And it worked smile

Then 10 years of self-employed project management and 15 years (parallel) as a lecturer at different schools. That makes you tired.

But thank God (and I mean it), at the age of 33 there was a turning point in my life smile More time for me, more time to read (philosophy, psychology, religion), more time to hike in nature, more time for God. But as you can see, you can't get away completely. Because why did God want me to study IT? But with my experience at work, in life and with God (and the last one is central), I've learned to solve things in a different way. And I also learned to deal with the hatred that is brought towards me smile

Yes, my story is long, my name is not JSM (Juan Stephanus Maria), but that's what I would be called if I had stayed with the Carthusian monks in Vermont in 2013. But as I said: Why did God want me to study IT? Why did he let me read all these many books? Why did he take me out into the wide world? Why did he put me in so many difficult situations? So that I shut up? Certainly not smile

I am now starting my wiki and still I have not found a solution to the above problem. Language switching for users who are not logged in at MediaWiki (Miraheze) does not work. As soon as I have the English version, I'll try again. If it doesn't work, I'll probably have to set up my own MediaWiki to test why it doesn't work. At Drupal, I was able to do it when I made a small website in 2015. Entity Translation and everything worked. MediaWiki is Drupal, isn't it?

have a nice evening, golinux

EDIT 20:16

Here the link to the supprot from Miraheze with some links. But I have removed the most of them since then. Hope they will answer, when they have time. I would like to do the Wiki there, because it is good for them and for me. So may WikiFrams are done, because now each one is setting up the same software again and again. Seems as we have to much free hosters smile

@Camtaf

Cool! I have the same idea and want to set up a network of Linux supporters who can help with the installation, preferably on site. I am now trying to set up a first website to pass on my own experiences, so the solutions of course, not the problems smile . I want to do it with a wiki and am currently struggling with Miraheze's translation feature. Apparently they still use page translation instead of entity translation. Or then it's a mixture! The main problem is the language switch for visitors, i.e. visitors who are not logged in. The thing does not work correctly and the visitor can only change the language of the sidebar, menu and footer. The page remains in the standard language. If you then click again on the page in the sidebar to display the correct language version, the language of the sidebar jumps back to the standard language and the page also remains in the standard language sad . The only way that works at the moment is to go to shows an additional language switcher on top of the sidetext, which is pretty ugly. It also shows all defined languages and therefore gets very large at some point. Ok, but at the moment it is like that and I use it for the main page. Now I am building the rest of the pages on, so the structure and the links in the sidebar. For now only in English. Then I will take care of the translation and the correct function of the language switch in the sidebar, or in the top right above the page text. Yes, it now has 3 !! But it has to be possible, because it also works with Wikipedia and that is also based on MediaWiki. Just a question of the right extensions, I think.

It's a shame that some here don't want to understand sad . Obviously, their own ideology is more important to these people than the welfare of millions of computer users who are still being ripped off by Microsoft (and others). But it will change. Whether If a user uses a distribution with or without systemd, we can leave to the user. After all, the Linux supporters can explain this topic and make the user aware of the advantages and disadvantages. It's the same when you buy a car or something else. There are always different versions and manufacturers. The world will not end because of systemd and not without it. But maybe with the crazy things that Gates & Co. do with their money?

#8 Re: Off-topic » What will happen to Windows? » 2021-06-06 19:35:22

Well ... as always, you will find very different people on Linux forums.

One really had a good idea, suggesting that new computers could give a choice of which OS to install on the first boot. Or you can simply buy the new computer together with a USB stick that has the ISO you want. You install the OS and continue to use the USB stick for other purposes.

But this post is about something completely different smile Just "some" do not seem to understand this, resp. not want to understand. Linux has a chance to become the number 1 OS in the world with the most users. However, it will not work if "these Linux people" continue to think that every Linux user must first become as "intelligent" as these Linux users!

But maybe "these Linux people" want trillions of dollars to continue pouring into the pockets of people like Gates, Zuckerberg, Soros or others every year so that these people can then decide when to wear a mask or an aluminum hat? Ok if you like that.

So, the Linux community should prepare to cope with a mass exodus of Windows users. It takes a little more than "intelligent" sayings in a Linux forum. How about "Linux supporters" who help Windows users to install and configure Linux? These "Linux supporters" could visit Windows users at home and help directly. Or you can organize Linux days in a public place where Windows users can come by and get help. Or you can do it online, but it is difficult to give help online when the Windows user only has one computer and wants to install it. Or not?

Such "Linux supporters" could also be trained so that Windows users are protected by "specially intelligent Linux people". Such a training would also contain social, methodic and didactic elements, because these are mostly lacking. And the training could be standardized. In this case, graduates of the course could be provided with a certificate if they have successfully completed the course. That gives more security and trust and protects against "self-proclaimed Linux experts".

There is an organization here that could organize such things worldwide:

https://www.lpi.org/

Does anyone here already have a certificate from this organization?

We have had a difficult year in which some things happened that we do not fully understand yet.

Yet it seems like some particularly special people are deeply involved. And it seems like these people have realized that the truth is about to emerge. Or do you think they just get divorced by accident? It is more about getting the money "safe".

If my fears come true, there will be a storm of indignation around the world, very soon! And that will affect Microsoft too. I don't know how many users Windos has, but if only 25% switch to Linux, then you should be well prepared for it. It requires better structures, more project management, more controlling and more user-friendliness.

Linux will grow and that creates problems, like everywhere when something grows. But you can learn from the mistakes of others smile

I used netinstall ISO because it was smaller to download. And the installation took a long time, almost 40 minutes. Nevertheless, I have the impression that my installation has very few applications. For example there is no update manager, only synoptic. There is no tool to format a USB or write an ISO to it. And so on. Do I really have the full version? If not, how can I go from the basic version to the full version without installing the applications individually?

#16 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » How to properly install and use Zram » 2021-06-04 00:23:40

JSM

Thank you for all the tips! Yes, there is some work to do, but I have also time, because Devuan will come with a new version and antiX has it since some days...so I can wait a little until the new versions are officialy stable. In this time I can test Fedora CoreOS. With TinyCore I am still on the way, step by step. I think that Devuan ist the best option for a normal user with just 1GB Ram. AntiX is also ok, but not so comfortable in settings, sometimes you have to edit direktly the file. That's making normal user afraid, I think. Fedora I don't know now, but if it is, was I think, then it must be a simple installation and then the conection to the Red Hat server. TinyCore I would just use for very special cases with really old hardware.

And as I am not involved in the "systemd-war" I will also make some links to other distry like Bodhi, Q4OS, Lununtu. Anyway they are running a bit slowlyer then the systemd free ones. And there are some more small ones, Void...etc.

Today I thout, that I will now set up the website first to see, what information I really need. I will also have to show, how to find out what hardware one have (64/32 bit, Ram size, disk size). Not every user will know where to find it on a windows OS. Then it needs something about download the ISO and move it on USB stick or a CD. Then about making a swapfile and set the swapiness. Change the browser and make the settings. Configurate the desktop, move away the icons that you don't need and so on. Yes, a lot of details. But I will have to make a line and just give the important information in order the installation is running stable and "fast". The rest they will find then, after a while on the forums.

I will call it : "LinuxChico" or just "LinuC". Chico is spanish and means small, but also boy.

And then I will have to find some people that would like to take it over an go on with it, because I have 53. The vision is, that LinuC will have a network of helpers in all the world, that even going to visit a user and help him to set the Distry up. There are so many people >60 that could do this!

#20 Re: Installation » low memory installation » 2021-06-01 19:16:35

JSM

Hi all!

I'll let you know that I've now set up my Devuan pretty well and can actively work with it. It runs very well, faster than antiX!

I came from Lubuntu looking for something smaller and first came across Q4OS. But after a month of productive work, I was still dissatisfied with the performance. So I kept searching and failed at first on the WiFi setup of Void Linux. Then I found antiX and thought I'd give it a try, even if I'm not an anti-capitalist. antiX runs quite well and after a while I got used to being a former systemd user without knowing it smile

When antiX was running and I also received new hardware, Toshiba 2010 with 1GB Ram, I started working with TinyCore. And I'm still working on it. Sure, it's the fastest, but you have to get used to it. I can already work on it with Vivaldi Browser. I would prefer Opera. TinyCore has a zram standard and I created a swapfile with 1GB. I also dealt a little with swapiness and understood what it is about and what is not. Some distributions recommend a swapiness of 10, which is absurd for a small Ram! 60 may be too high, I work with 30-40 and have very good results on all distros. I suspect that with a deep swapiness the swap task, if it is activated, is given a fairly high priority, since at this moment the RAM is already very full. This then automatically slows down the other task, for example the browser. If the swapiness is higher, the swap task is given a lower priority and runs more or less "on the side", but earlyer, longer and more often. But since the CPU is extremely fast compared to us users, it doesn't bother us at work. Delaying swapping is therefore not necessarily wise with little ram. It just fills up the RAM and lets the CPU work at a low level until it is swapped. But then the CPU is fully utilized because the late swap task is given a very high priority.

But now to Devuan!

Believe it or not, I surf faster with Devuan than with antiX! Wow! Here is my swap:

devuan @ devuan: ~ $ cat / proc / swaps
Filename Type Size Used Priority
/ swapfile file 2097148 372736 -2
devuan @ devuan: ~ $

Here my sysctl:

#swapiness
vm.swappiness = 40
vm.vfs_cache_pressure = 10

You see, with the right settings swapfile is actually sufficient. I couldn't activate zram yet, I wrote a post about it. But actually I don't need it at all. Everything that is compression loads the CPU selectively and leads to waiting times in other programs.

I had just opened 8 facebook tabs (!) and could switch from one to the other with a waiting time of less than 5 seconds! Opera has some very interesting settings on this subject, but everyone should know for themselves whether they want to use Opera, because of the license.

Here is an article about swapiness that helped me a lot:

https://www.howtogeek.com/449691/what-i … change-it/

Unfortunately, I had the negative experience on antiX forum that anti-capitalism has priority and that the constructive solutions come afterwards. One is bullied, posts are deleted, accounts blocked and even the update function is manipulated. I also noticed strange waiting times while surfing. Shortly after I posted about it on antiX and also here, the problem "solved" ... and my post about "jOS" disappeared on antiX forum smile

That brings me to the last point, which is "jOS". Apparently Fedora CoreOS is something like that. As soon as I have completed all the areas at Devuan and I'm a little further with TinyCore, I'll test it. I have 4 partitions and one is still free smile

I come back to this older post.

https://wiki.debian.org/ZRam

I installed zram-tool and made the settings in /etc/default/zramswap. But it doesn't work yet, because zram is not created. I then tried to add it to autostart. But I don't know which command to enter, resp. where the executable script is. Or do I have to do something else?

I would also like the zram with lz4, if possible, or with an even better algorithm.

Is there any other method than zram-tool to get a zram from boot on Devuan?

Login with root I could find a way with navigating with the keyboard. But in my user also the keyboard is not activ :-(

I have to go to applications menu / settings / mouse and touchpad  and there make the check on "Enable this service"

But how?

Hi

Believe it or not, I disabled my touchpad! Too much messed around with the settings sad

It is only deactivated on the user account. If I log in as root it works.

How can I reactivate it for the user? From root or with a code in the comande line?

Thanks for the help!

I'm not sure yet if Fedora CoreOS is something like jOS, but it could be. Here is a text translation from a German article:

"Installing Fedora CoreOS is pretty easy, especially in the cloud. On the project's download page, you can find image downloads as well as links to AMIs for the various AWS data centers. You can choose a suitable cloud with just a few clicks -System off, configures the hardware, optionally uploads an ignition configuration and creates an SSH key. In under five minutes you get a running CoreOS system that you can log into via SSH and then immediately install containers. "

Is there an application server or is it just an update server? Maybe we have to test it?
