Hello people. I am skeptical about elogind too. I am not against 100% since sometimes you have to work and some tools use elogind. I know elogind is not systemD but comes to fill a gap systemD made. BSD and Illumos can use a desktop environment without elogind and this is tremendous. I like wm's and semi desktops (lumina or enlightment fit here) so i mighht give them again a shot to see what's going on.
Well, in short: if a folder doesn't have its own partition, it's hanging under the / in the tree. Which means its data is stored on the / partition. So in your case, /var, /usr and /tmp are filling up the / partition if a rogue process continues to write data to it. Frequently, log files (/var/log) can become huge and thus clog up the system. Other sources of trouble exist as well, like malware etc. That's for you to figure out
Tip: the ls command has info on size of the directory:
ls -l /var ls -l /usr ls -l /tmp
Probably best results as root.
Thanks...
What i was doing is i added too much iso's on /var/lib/libvirt/images
I guess i had to add more gb on / though...
This is why having separate partitions for stuff like /var, /usr and /tmp are advised. Certainly I do adhere to this
Your Downloads folder is huge and the key reason why your / has filled up. I take it you downloaded a lot so clearing that one out will release a decent amount of storage.
well in most cases seperate partition for /var /usr and /tmp won't be a thing to consider
but i have a seperate /home partition which is around 440 gb and i am using only 6% of it
why my / is full i don't get it and i think i know what i am doing...
generally / is where things like programmes are stored while /home is where personall folders are stored
you are saying i have to create a bigger / partition rather than /home partition ? I don't get it but i would like to see what you are talking about...
thanks!
Hello i use devuan daedalus. My partition scheme has 4 partitions 1. for bootloader, 1 for swap, 1 for root and 1 for /home.
My ssd is almost 500gb (patriot ssd if that matters)
my / is now over 90+ big and i cannot understand why since i only use minimal applications for certain reasons.
df -h shows:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
udev 6.8G 0 6.8G 0% /dev
tmpfs 1.4G 1.3M 1.4G 1% /run
/dev/sda2 28G 25G 1.1G 96% /

/dev/sdc1 15G 12G 2.6G 83% /media/rhtoras/Ventoy
i examined everything via du and df commands, then tried gui (mate and ncdu) and nothing...

No.

Yes.
Thanks i might have to try it soon...
I tried this distro. Installing with calamares worked flawlessly. Only downside is calamares says debian instead of devuan or crowz. The general idea is simplicity and darkness. Ok i can see the concept. I am fan of simplicity but not the biggest fan of darkness. I tried both jwm and also installed xfce and it worked fine too. No bloat applications just normal stuff to be expected. You can do what you like. It has sysVinit although i did not try runit or openrc which i like more. What is the big plus of this distro ? Well calamares installation is the big plus. Simplicity is a plus too but i can see not everyone liking jwm. There could have been lxde, openbox or xfce. I like the ideas behind this distribution of devuan. If i was to build an iso i would use calamares and a simple desktop like they did here.
Even xfce is light enough to be shipped for new users. What i could add (sorry but i don't remember having such thing) is a welcome script before installing with some infos about this distro or some basic commands so i can suggest it to new users.
i am trying again refracta...
one of the better distros out there...
there are no experimental iso's as i see...
i could make something using the tools provided because i like light systems on resources
i also sent a week ago message to distrowatch so they can inform us about refracta news and on various sites
can you please send them too...
i have saved so many people with refracta iso...
only downside is on some cases refracta installer could not work and i had to use devuan net installer
Very nice config... can it work on fvwm1,2 and 3 ?

απλά πολύ google ρε παιδιά, google translate, analytics, γιατι;
From your previous problem I gather your home directory is on a separate partition.
Have you checked that the entry in /etc/fstab is correct to mount that partition?
Have you checked that the contents of the home partition look sensible?
yes i did all these...
the only downside is i discovered i could login as user from tty
what i did after a research is to recreate a /home/user directory via mkdir
then
sudo chown -R user:user /home/user
and just in case...
cp -rT /etc/skel /home/user
replaced user with my username
Then everything went just fine except from some files that were deleted but i had backup. It was helpfull i had a seperate /home partition. It save lives.
caps lock key?
nope
i found that if i press ctrl+alt+f1 to enter tty i can login with password and username ok
but i press startx it wont load and if i force i get the following error:
The path for the directory containing caja settings need read and write permissions:
also
cd/home/rhtoras
won't work
only
cd/home
which is empty if i press ls
p.s i use mate desktop that's why caja
and rhtoras is my user
Hello i just restored my devuan workstation (i had some grub/efivars) issues
Everything works fine but i can't login. Btw there are two entries on boot menu but all lead to devuan installation.
I use correct user and password. It goes on loop after 1 second and won't let me in. I can boot though via root account and the password i have set.
Any ideas ?
I did:
cat /etc/passwd
and in resutls my user is ok
rhtoras:x:1000:1000:rhtoras,,,:/home/rhtoras:/bin/bash
as root .profile contains:
# ~/.profile: executed by Bourne-compatible login shells.
if [ "$BASH" ]; then
if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then
. ~/.bashrc

mesg n 2> /dev/null || true
Any suggestions ?
Γεια σε όλους σας.

Να περνάτε καλά!
I did a lot of tricks but finally i found a way to restore my workstation
i had to mount first / partition and then the /boot/efi not the opposite
then
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot/efi
and then
sudo grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot --bootloader-id=debian --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/mnt/boot/efi
now it boots up again just fine
the only problem is i have two -exactly the same- boot entries on boot menu and it wont login with correct user only as root
but i will find these since i am in!
Thanks!
....
i will try this method and see how it goes...
i did some tricks though to manage and install a new devuan iso because even this was not applicable
btw is there rescue mode on net installer ? (i don't remember so)
....
i thought it could be this but two years ago it was buggy (maybe i did something wrong though)
i might try it again to see how it goes
Thank you both !
look what i did
i reflashed bios
now i am again sure i have latest bios and at least on desktop live grub boots without error but the problem now is grub is black and white and before it used to be blue like on devuan
net install iso i used to install devuan on a friends laptop still cant recognize ethernet firmware on my desktop
something has changed i am sure and i wonder what this is
on the other hand it was not server iso but pure net install so i can install whatever init system i want
now i cannnot install whatever init i want since desktop live uses the «old» sysVinit which works but i pefer openrc and runit anytime!
i guess i'll have to stick with sysV init but Devuan imho should either provide nonfree firmware again on netinstall or offer iso with different init system or if they do not want to maint all init system at least provide an easy guide on what to do to enable runit i,e in place of sysV
Now if i want to boot to desktop it says (after grub screen)
invalid magick number please load kernel first
Hello gents! I am using linux last 6 years or so. I have 3 pc's 1 ddr 3 with intel pentium, one ddr4 with ryzen (both with msi motherboard) and a laptop ddr3 era (fujitsi lifebook). 5 years now i am no systemD and i never look back so last year i installed devuan because i like the idea of a mainstream os without the need for systemD. On my laptop i run Void Linux without issues. I've done installation 100+ times these years and 99% of the time on real hardware or as we say on bare metal.
So last year i installed Devuan Daedalus on my ddr3 desktop and everything was fine. All partitions were made custom by me (1 for swap, 1 for /boot/efi -esp- 1 for /root and last but not least a seperate /home partition). I chose openrc and mate desktop. Everythin was fine until recently!!!
Last week i unplugged my ssd to plug a win7 (a friend's one not mine i don't use windows) ssd and restore some files. When i plugged back my devuan ssd i could not boot into system. The same ssd could boot on my other desktop but with messed graphics and of course could not boot onto my laptop.
I bought a new ssd and tried to reinstall devuan daedalus only to see that m,y firmware and ethernet was not detected by net installer. One week ago was working now it is not detected. In the meanwhile i installed successfully devuan daedalus on a friends laptop. So it is 100% sure i know what i was doing. But let's say i install linux for the first time. I tried Fluxuan and Miyo only to see there is not boot loader. I tried to change boot order but nothing happened. I tried devuan live desktop xfce and old-old stable iso and i could boot on desktop. I tried via refracta installer but when i reboot nothing shows up. I tried refracta (even the vintage iso) and nothing happened. I mean i could install iso and when i reboot a destroyed grub screen and after a new reboot i could not reboot. The message was this:
reboot and select proper Boot device
and to insert proper boot device and so on...
here's the deal
i tried to plug an ssd with artix and it worked, i tried to plug a brand new ssd and installed void linux successfully|
wiped void and tried devuan again but nothing happened
used live iso, mount my ssd and inspected these in my /etc/default/ grub text-file
#GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false
i assume this should have been uncomment but even this: could not work when i tried to uncomment and reboot
i also assume when i unplugged my basic boot ssd i deleted something in the efi firmware
boot order information is stored in NVRAM and i suspect my EFI deleted my NVRAM entries
yes i know i must not unplugged my boot ssd BUT
why all other distros can be installed on this particular pc ?
why devuan daedalus cannot detect my ethernet when a year ago it could ?
should i reflash my bios ?
Thanks anyway and hope you understand my situation and why i said all these to reach in the final questions.
ANy advice should be appreciated...
Hello people...
I was trying to migrate from a linux mint debian edition to a linux mint devuan edition but i failed.
Here's the deal. I know we can migrate from debian to devuan following the instructions on devuan.org and maybe the script on devuan's git. I tried both ways and always had trouble. The trouble begun after i was trying to upgrade i think. I know others have done what i am talking successfully. Some of them installed mint repos on top of devuan too making what i want but the opposite way.
Any suggestions ? Any step by step guide ?
Thank you!
I prefer all systems except systemD. Runit is the best for desktop use. On the other hand openrc is popular and widely used. SysVinit is old but i can say it just works and a lot distributions still use it. There is also s6 which is also very good and powerfull but on the other hand very difficult for me.

The grep needs to be expanded to show the kernel driver:
lspci -knn | grep -A2 "Audio"
@OP: have you read the beowulf release notes? If you have multiple sound cards then PulseAudio might need to be autostarted.
Use pgrep pulse to check if it's running and use aplay -l to list all available audio devices.
lspci -knn | grep -A2 "Audio"

Hello... New to devuan i use Artix and Void Linux. I use an e radio to stream my show and butt is my choice. I use an xlr mic and external usb soundcard. All distros from Mint to Void recognise this sound card. Etetics based on Devuan no. It has alsa and pulseaudio but none of themn works. Basically i have no microphone and no sound. All settings are the usual used on my other 3 distros. Is there a special configuration i have to do, so the usb sound card works ?
What should i check ?
p.s Mind you i was on live usb stick when i was trying this.
