#276 Hardware & System Configuration » Strange mounting problem with USB drive » 2017-12-03 15:28:54

Hello All,

I am having an issue I've never come across before in 20 years of Linux experience. I am running a fully updated Ascii with MATE. The problem goes like this:

I have an external hard drive with a partition named "Linux" on it. Usually, I simply plug in the drive, and it auto-mounts on /media/sgage/Linux. For the past couple of days, however, it mounts on /media/sgage/Linux1. However, the item /media/sgage/Linux also appears. If I try to cd to Linux, I get 'permission denied'. I can cd to Linux1, and all my stuff (backups, mostly) is there. Meanwhile, 'Linux' shows up in Caja under Devices.

If I manually umount /media/sgage/Linux1, /media/sgage/Linux remains, but Caja shows 'Linux' under devices as unmounted.

This same exact scenario occurs with the other partition on the drive, and it also occurs with USB sticks.

I've never seen anything like it - anyone have a clue?

TIA...

"I think that FF57 is o.k. Way better than Chrome/google in terms of privacy. I do check Palemoon once in a while but it still suffers from some compatibility issues."

That is my assessment exactly. I like the idea of Pale Moon, and have used it extensively, but I continually run into incompatibilities at the most inconvenient times. And I will have nothing to do with Google anything. So FF it is. I have the handful of addons that I 'need'. It is fast, stable, and compatible.

fungus: Yes, I am very well acquainted with DAcres - over the years I've taken several of my classes there on field trips. My band even played there once for their "Farm Days" harvest festival. Good times! It is truly a wonderful place with wonderful people - they are trying all sorts of agricultural techniques to see what actually works in our climate/soil/etc. In fact, I just got their monthly newsletter :-)

I learned some of the distinction between wants and needs during a period of long and sometimes grueling wilderness backpacking trips. I remember once on one of these trips, in the middle of nowhere, thinking that the apex of civilizational achievement was a hot toasted English muffin with butter and honey. OK, I might have been a little bit delirious :-)

I've lived in some primitive situations, little cabins in the woods, etc.  At some point I decided that running water was the apex of civilizational achievement (bonus points for hot running water). Refrigeration beyond an icebox was luxury. Electricity was something that other people had.

During all this, I was very happy - this was all by choice, and not trying to convince anybody else of anything. I also had a warm and loving circle of real friends - I was no misanthrope or anything like it. I don't like to be crowded about with people, but I love people.

But I think you have given me my new motto: Let's all remember to remain human!

These last few comments have brought up the notion of choice. I think people have more choice than they think. There can be tradeoffs, of course. I choose to live in a very rural setting, in New Hampshire USA (basically in the woods). Finding certain kinds of employment is difficult to impossible, unless you're willing to put up with a long commute. The social dynamics are very different in a small town. The types of mental stimulation are very different in the farm/woods. There is plenty to think about, believe me.

But if you feel you need to be involved in a certain field that requires an urban locations, well, that's your choice. How much of the urban 'lifestyle' goes along with that is also largely a choice. Talking about choice inevitably brings up the concepts of "wants" vs. "needs". I think a lot of what people consider 'needs' are really 'wants'.

Exactly what I said a few posts up.  We are definitely on the downside of the curve.  It's been all downhill since the 60s and 70s.  There were shadows of what was to come even then but life was good . . .

I totally agree with you and cynwulf. And yet, I still plant trees, and I still tend my garden. Yes, there were shadows of what was to come even back then. I think it was in 1970 that I decided not to bring any children into the world, and I haven't. As an ecologist (research and teaching) for most of my entire adult life, I don't feel great hope. It really does look like we are going to eat the planet.

Interesting stuff for a thread entitled "lol!"...

Firefox 57, due this month (beta available now), is different. It's very fast and snappy, and I find myself spending most of my time with it (the beta, for now). Many extensions are broken in the new model, but I have the ones I need - your mileage will obviously vary. Pale Moon is very nice in a lot of ways, and I've been using it for quite a while as much as I can, but still too many sites just don't work, and it's not a simple matter of fiddling with user agent strings.  I will not have anything to do with anything associated with Google.

Too funny!

Anyway, I read the whole 4-part series, and in my opinion he is right on. I've been an "IT Professional" for over 35 years now, and I've seen it come down pretty much just as he has described. I still believe that some distros of Linux will remain true to the early ideals and not sell out to systemd/RH/Gnome/you-know-who.

Long Live Devuan!

@fsmithred,

Can you confirm the proper repos to be using for ascii? I am a bit confused at this point...

#288 Re: Other Issues » When is Amprolla3 coming? » 2017-10-19 12:24:28

Thanks for the news, fsmithred! It seems to be working fine here...

#289 Re: Other Issues » When is Amprolla3 coming? » 2017-10-10 11:44:17

I've been away from computers for a few days (I recommend it - ahhh!!!). Anyway, I fired up Ascii this morning, and found 100 packages ready for upgrade! Things seem to be starting to roll in Ascii-land...

Maybe soon, for real. I already know that amprolla3 works, because I tried it when it was on a test server. And I noticed today in #devuan-dev that a new devuan-keyring was being built. This is all just circumstantial evidence, but I'm hopeful.

I'm not aware of any problems with leaving ascii-proposed-updates enabled.

Thanks for the news, and your insights!

Make sure you have ascii-proposed-updates enabled in sources.list. Some of the security updates can be found there.

Thanks for the tip. I just enabled it, updated, got:

The following packages will be upgraded:
  firefox-esr libmariadbclient18 whois

That's about it. Should I leave it enabled, or are there potential problems?

Say, you wouldn't happen to know the status of Amprolla3, would you? I think golinux wants to know ;-)

I've heard Amprolla3 mentioned here and there, on IRC, etc., but never any hint as to when it might be "turned on". I reckon the answer is probably something like "when it's ready" :-)  But I am really looking forward to seeing Ascii start moving. On my (rather non-challenging) hardware it seems quite solid, but there have been no updates in a long long time, and I wonder about security.

Anyway, can we expect to see updates/security-updates in Ascii soon? Days? Weeks? Months?

Both eudev and vdev are available for testing in ascii but I'm not quite sure where they are maybe in experimental.

Eudev has been working for me quite well in ascii (no issues at all as far as I can tell) - I wish it was available for jessie...

In my opinion, as light as it may be, this jessie was too early to be called 1.0, it should have retained its beta tag till ascii gets finished/audited.  Ascii seems barely started, and stretch on the other side seems a bit problematic as compared to previous stable editions.  If I am not mistaken, stretch went into freeze for the longest time in debian history.  Unlucky timing for devuan?  Jessie 8 had more than 500 bug tickets open before stretch became stable.
One systemd mess chasing another.

In my opinion, the mistake wasn't calling jessie stable, it was calling it jessie! Of course, jessie is Devuan stable, but jessie is Debian oldstable. Debian stable is stretch, but the Devuan branch that tracks stretch is not even alpha - call it testing. So people say 'jessie', or 'stable' or 'testing' or this or that, and it gets very confusing very fast. Whose stable? Which jessie? Yes, often you can tell from context, but sometimes not so much.

And yes, Debian is dealing with one systemd mess chasing another... I did some testing with Stretch this morning, and I feel like I need to take a shower :-)  I don't think it's any stretch (ha ha!) to say that systemd disgusts me. I'm back to my usual dual-boot between ascii and (Devuan!) jessie...

Take a look at  the thread  I just oppened up. http://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=1555

Both I and fsmithred are running LXDE (if I am not mistaken as mentioned in another thread).
I have also installed eudev in all my installations.
My ascii is an evolution from previous edition of miyo linux.
My ceres is from scratch installation from Devuan 1 Live.
All LXDE.
All LXDE for years if you include Debian as "somehow" related distro.
NOT ONCE, have I run gparted without a password, unless one would consider running from the terminal where sudo was used right before and the session didn't expire.  But gparted-pkexec is different from sudo gparted-pkexec in when it will ask for the password.

So what can explain the difference between my and fsmithred's experience

It's a mystery wrapped in an enigma. Or is it the other way around? :-)

BTW, I am running eudev as well, and everything seems to be nominal.

I will check out your new thread...

Just for the record... I am running Ascii (ugpraded from stock Devuan Jessie months ago), and have no such issue with pkexec.

[Edited to mention that I'm running with MATE.]

Add me to the list of those who love stable and boring. I used to be an avid tester of everything and anything, but nowadays that seems  a lot less appealing.

That said, I am running Ascii as I write this :-)

#300 Re: Devuan » Status of releases and details of packages » 2017-07-25 15:21:08

I am not a dev - just a user. I have been using both jessie and ascii for months. For me, for the programs I use, for my use case, ascii is now rock-solid. I am sure there are programs that you and/or others might want to use that are still glitchy. That said, ascii is based on stretch, which is Debian stable - the only real issue is getting rid of systemd throughout. Sometimes a program you want to use depends on something that depends on something that depends on something that still depends on systemd. I had several such issues up to a couple of months ago, then suddenly that final link in the dependency chain was fixed, and all was well.

Again, YMMV, and I'm sure it will. Are you trying to do something in ascii and finding it doesn't work, or is unstable? If so, report it. If not, from where comes your 'feeling'? Ascii is testing, so yes, it's not time to roll it out for production. But if you have it already installed, then just test it and see what you can see.
