Update fails - xserver-xorg-core "loses keyboard and mouse"

My Devuan Jessie machine has been running happily for a long time now, but when I try my usual

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

it finds lots of packages, mainly from jessie-security,
and downloads then. On checking the bug reports it says :-

Retrieving bug reports... Done
Parsing Found/Fixed information... Done
grave bugs of xserver-xorg-core (2:1.16.4-1 → 2:1.16.4-1+deb8u1+b1) <Outstanding>
 b1 - #868068 - [xserver-xorg-core] Upgrade from 2:1.16.4-1 to 2:1.16.4-1+deb8u1 loses keyboard and mouse
Summary:
 xserver-xorg-core(1 bug)
Are you sure you want to install/upgrade the above packages? [Y/n/?/...] n
**********************************************************************
****** Exiting with an error in order to stop the installation. ******
**********************************************************************
E: Sub-process /usr/sbin/apt-listbugs apt returned an error code (10)
E: Failure running script /usr/sbin/apt-listbugs apt

I tell it to not upgrade, as losing the mouse and keyboard sounds a bit serious.
I have left it for a few days and tried again, in case there was a a glitch in the packaging system, but it still produces the same result.
Checking up I can see the reported bug at Debian :-

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … bug=868068

Is this a problem with using jessie-security?

Wow, this seems serious, looks like it may not occur on all machines, I will logout and test one of my other partitions and post back.

EDIT: Hey, can you post the model/make of your machine?

Okay, tested one machine, Compaq CQ58, about a 2012 model, dual-core AMD APU (at a tortoise-like and underwhelming clock speed of 1.0 ghz), no issues with Devuan openbox 64 bit, mouse and keyboard work fine so far.

Re: Update fails - xserver-xorg-core "loses keyboard and mouse"

I know from personal experience that when I was using Sid that there was problems with xorg with mouse freezing and the answer was to install xorg-xserver-legacy.

Woops package not in Jessie.  Dist-upgraded today in Jessie no problems.

My machine has a Gigabyte H87-HD3 Intel H87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard, with an Intel Core i5-4570 3.20 GHz processor.
It uses the in-built Intel graphics.
Linux fluorine 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.43-2+deb8u1 (2017-06-18) x86_64 GNU/Linux

The general set up (or rather how I got here) is described at :-

Re: Update fails - xserver-xorg-core "loses keyboard and mouse"

I have now tried disabling the updates and security repositories, and the result is that

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

still wants to upgrade to xserver-xorg-core 2:1.16.4-1+deb8u1, which still has the warning "loses keyboard and mouse".

I have still not let it upgrade while getting the warning.

Thank you for testing this. What version of xserver-xorg-core do you now have installed?

Re: Update fails - xserver-xorg-core "loses keyboard and mouse"

Likely this is why I've been getting freezes when online, Firefox, after several quick changes of websites!
It is in Devuan when you install & upgrade - maybe we shouldn't upgrade - just stay with the 'live' install as is, likewise I upgraded Vuu-Do, & it happens on it too.

xserver-xorg-core/unknown,now 2:1.16.4-1+deb8u1+b1 amd64 [installed,automatic]

Edit: I'm not sure what is on the original distros.
Edit2: My mouse does come back after several minutes, or at least, it feels like it.

Re: Update fails - xserver-xorg-core "loses keyboard and mouse"

My problem is listed on http://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=1534
I somehow thing the two are related.
I am on ceres
CPU: Intel 2 Duo E6550 (2) @ 2.333GHz
GPU: Intel Q35

When ANY dm comes up to the login screen both key/mouse freeze.  Both are usb and very common generix pieces.
I finally figured that if I pull the plugs off and put them back on the problem vanishes and only shows up on next boot.
Weird?

Bus 006 Device 003: ID 0461:4dbf Primax Electronics, Ltd
Bus 006 Device 002: ID 046d:c05a Logitech, Inc. M90/M100 Optical Mouse

My Miyo Ascii installation has no problems at all.  The one that does was a clean Devuan 1 installer system.

Re: Update fails - xserver-xorg-core "loses keyboard and mouse"

Forgot to mention, most of my freezes were on laptops, using the touchpads, however, it did happen on my desktop, but that seems to be OK now.

Yesterday, I added a battery state monitor to conky on my Vuu-Do installs, today, I didn't get a freeze - go figure.......

I am still have version 2:1.16.4-1 installed and it is running nicely. According to Synaptic it is from the stable/main repository, which is now offering your version.

When I checked the Debian bug report, it is still outstanding and there does not appear to be any progress.

Re: Update fails - xserver-xorg-core "loses keyboard and mouse"

I have just spotted some new posts on Debian bug report, which suggest that unplugging the keyboard and mouse and plugging back in may help, although this is not really a proper solution, but may help the de-bugging.

Got to be machine-specific then, I upgraded the xserver-xorg-core to the same version listed, two different machines (Compaq and an HP, both laptops), 3 different versions of Vuu-do, and no issues here as yet.

Geoff

2:1.16.4-1+deb8u1+b1 , have it installed now on a couple of different machines, 5 total partitions/installs, Vuu-do and also my stock Devuan and Miyo installs and no issues.

Looks like it's very much machine-specific, some hardware runs it fine, and others not so much.

Not for nothing, but both my lappys are running AMD APU's, you guys who are experiencing issues could you add  CPU/APU/GPU info?  Might be an Intel issue, or Nvidia....

Re: Update fails - xserver-xorg-core "loses keyboard and mouse"

I only mentioned it, because when I checked, I was running that version of xserver-xorg-core. smile

I'm beginning to think my problem is FF related, as it doesn't always happen, & not at/in the same time frame after starting.

May have been just a coincidence it happening when others were getting freezes on their machines.

Edit: Another coincidence is the fact that I had just installed both Devuan & Vuu-Do to my actual hardware. smile

I always liked AMD but my last precious all AMD machine was stolen.
I only buy what I can get between 50-100 and I am happy.  Usually
a refurb Dell with a year warranty.

Re: Update fails - xserver-xorg-core "loses keyboard and mouse"

I have now upgraded the other packages, not involved in this query.

The method I chose was to use Synaptic.
Click "Reload".
then bottom left, select "Status" ad then upper left select "Installed (upgradable)".
This displays all of the installed packages which can be upgraded.
Scroll down to the queried package "xserver-xorg-core" and click on it.
Click on the Package pull down menu and select "Force version".
This will pop-up a window which allows you to select which version you want on your machine. I selected the old version.
Just to be safe I also selected a couple of other apparently related packages with the same versions installed/available and forced their versions.
Then simply click on "Mark All Upgrades".
You can check that the ones that you have forced will not be upgraded.
Click on "Apply" and it will then upgrade all of the other packages. I did notice a warning about Firefox failing to display YouTube correctly, but let it proceed as that can be worked around if necessary.

As I wrote on the above, due to updates not my own involvement, my problem with freezing mouse/k-b has been magically cured in ceres.  Still exists on ascii.

Re: Update fails - xserver-xorg-core "loses keyboard and mouse"

Have updated my repositories, on my main desktop, to the Amprolla3 ones, as per :-

https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=1723

I have now looked at updating and upgrading. As the new repositories include stable-proposed-updates, I checked the versions and synaptic reports :-

2:1.16.4-1+deb8u2 (stable-proposed-updates)

2:1.16.4-1+deb8u1+b1 (stable)

It took a bit of fiddling, but eventually I persuaded synaptic to install the deb8u2 version and everything (i.e. X) still works nicely.

I am not very well up on the version numbers, but does the "+b1" part refer to a bug report?

Re: Update fails - xserver-xorg-core "loses keyboard and mouse"

It's safer if you use codenames. Use "jessie" instead of "stable" and "ascii" rather than "testing." When ascii becomes the stable release, you can change sources.list to say "ascii" instead of "jessie." That way, you get to decide when you do the dist-upgrade instead of running into it when it happens.

Re: Update fails - xserver-xorg-core "loses keyboard and mouse"

I only use the codenames, as in "jessie" in the repositories, but synaptic seems to report the versions as being from "stable". Also, if you select the "origin" display in synaptic, then the repositories are shown as "stable" etc. They are all from "pkgmaster.devuan.org".
