[SOLVED] Waterfox and AppArmor.

I just installed the latest version of Devuan. I am running the LXDE desktop. I have downloaded waterfox and moved the directory to /opt. I have added /opt to my $PATH with:

export PATH=$PATH:/opt

to my ~/.bash_profile file and updated $PATH.

Currently, there are two programs, residing in each their folders, one was installed as a .deb file, the other is waterfox. Waterfox still does not appear to be recognized by the system, where as the other program does. I have created a waterfox.desktop file for waterfox, however, my experience with a previous install tells me that this doesn't work if using dmenu with spectrwm, which is my daily driver. It will only work if I include the full path to the binary. I assume that this has something to do with apparmor, but haven't a clue as to what to do, as I have no experience with it.

Can anyone provide some advice, before I start futzing around on my own?

OK, thanks for your reply and posting those links. Now I am less sure that it is AppArmor that is the culprit, but there is something that is definitely going on. From the LXDE environment, if I run the following, I get a longer response:

$ simplenote
Checking for beta autoupdate feature for deb/rpm distributions
Found package-type: deb

What is that autoupdate "feature"?

$ waterfox
bash: waterfox: command not found

Both programs reside in /opt, which is in my path... The binary paths are as follows:

/opt/Simplenote/simplenote

/opt/waterfox/waterfox

and

/opt/waterfox/waterfox-bin

Both programs appear to have the correct ownership for the /opt directory, so why will one run and the other not?

I am still in the process of getting this set up properly, however I have run through a diagnostic process. The conclusion appears to be that for some reason,

export PATH="$PATH:/opt"

also needed to be included in the ~/.bashrc file as well, despite the use of the login manager from the install being used.

Secondly I have also added links:

$ sudo ln -s /opt/waterfox/waterfox /usr/local/bin/waterfox

AND

$ sudo ln -s /opt/waterfox/waterfox-bin /usr/local/bin/waterfox-bin

I don't understand why it was necessary for a portable app, when it isn't necessary with a .deb program, both installed in the /opt directory.

At least now, waterfox appears in the <ALT> + <F2> LXDE run menu.

The next step will be installing spectrwm and notion to see if waterfox can be run from dmenu in spectrwm and the run menu in notion. I will post again, when I know if this issue is solved or not.

You may want to check that the waterfox* files are executable the latest download of them did not have the executable set for me causing my .desktop file I made to fail when trying to start it. The -bin I did not use still does not have it set as I only put it on the waterfox itself.

Thanks. Part of my diagnostic process was exactly to make sure that both waterfox and waterfox-bin were executable. Good to see the info for disabling the AI hoi polloi.

Waterfox was acquired in 2020 by Privacy One Group Ltd - the company who also acquired Startpage. That company was a subsidiary of ad company System1... Waterfox was divested three years later, but mud sticks. Personally I don't trust supposed "privacy" focused projects, or their developers, who sell out to advertising companies. There are more than a few articles out there related to this.

@devuan_dk_fan: With "/opt" in $PATH one would expect to find some binaries in "/opt" such as for instance "/opt/binary1" and "/opt/binary2" ... but you seem to expect something else?

Did you ever look into what $PATH is, and how it isused? You find $PATH in many operating systems (although some will name it %PATH% instead). All in all it's part of the magic of running programs without naming them by absolute pathname, but merely naming them with relative path.

Like, with your "/opt" setting, you could type "waterfox/waterfox-bin" as a command to run the binary linked as "waterfox-bin" in the directory "waterfox/" relative to some direcotry in $PATH (namely "/opt").

Perhaps I wasn't clear? I was surprised that despite two programs residing in the /opt directory (simplenote and waterfox) only the one installed as a .deb package (simplenote) showed up in the $PATH. It was necessary to simlink the other (waterfox and waterfox-bin) to /usr/local/bin/ before it appeared in the $PATH. I don't believe that is normally necessary if both reside in the !modified $PATH... /opt

Just in regards to simplenote, as its not an official package its hard to determine what is going on there.
I am fairly certain if you run below command on simplenote it should give you a clue to how it starts, my guess is it has a symlink to /usr/bin or similar.

Hello @RedGreen,

He sold out to a US based ad company, despite all the previous privacy claims. It's not about "hate", that's an oversimplification. I have nothing against him or the project, but if one markets a product on privacy claims, then sells said project to an ad company - I am going to not consider / reconsider using it. If you read his public statement at the time of the sale, it's not at all convincing. System1 registered the Privacy One company for the purpose of acquiring Waterfox and Startpage. The intent there was to hide / obscure the acquisition by System1, a fairly common business practice. It's easy to see why it became independent again - it was a bad move to start with. That's all, I'm not going to further derail the thread...

Maybe a symlink is needed? Mozilla's method for manual installation to /opt/ recommends a symlink.

Create a symlink to the Firefox executable:

Something else just came to mind, is your ~/.bash_profile being sourced correctly?

I think you will need to export $PATH in ~/.profile instead. I'm sure ~/.bash_profile is only for login shells.

So what is the problem with just putting it in a bin directory in your home? That is what I do with all of these things then create the .desktop file pointing to it.

It is rather large as the file I got from the .deb I found had all those languages enabled and got the icon file from a reddit posting.

Now this works for me in KDE if the desktop you use does not respect the XDG specification for these things I have no clue how to do it so it works.

@RedGreen925, you're coming across as a foaming at the mouth, emotionally driven, web browser fanboi, and thus leading me to conclude that you're not worth debating with. I have come across this before, where fans of $PROJECT get personally offended if their top favourite software is criticised. That's you.

I posted the facts about Waterfox's acquistion by System1 and it's spinning off as an independent browser three years later. I added my thoughts, to the effect that I wouldn't trust it. If you do, that's up to you. You got offended.

So what is the problem with just putting it in a bin directory in your home? That is what I do with all of these things then create the .desktop file pointing to it.

Now you just stop with that sensible talk, we're trying to do things the hard way here.
